Press conference is running late, but Judith Collin’s statement is out – resigning as Minister, but not as MP.

New allegations of her undermining SFO head Adam Feeley have finally been too much.

Not too much apparently was:

  • Oravida conflict of interest
  • Oravida lies and coverup
  • slander against journo Katie Bradford
  • Bronwyn Pullar leak affair
  • enabling cyber-bullying (and death threats) of a civil servant by providing details
  • relationship with Slater working on #dirtypolitics

etc..

Update: John Key says this matter is much more serious than any of the above…  so pretty serious then!

        The email is disastrous for many people.

        Various journalists compliantly running Slater’s lines (and Odgers’); Odgers involved in trying to undermine the head of the SFO (why on earth? She’s a lawyer, isn’t she?); Hooton apparently being asked to set up an ipredict market on Feeley lasting (who knows what Matthew may have known about the background, but not a good look to be mentioned), etc..

        This is much more fulsome evidence of the kind of extensive network of ‘dirty politics’ that has been operating over the past six years than almost anything in the book. All in one email.

        At best, this reveals Key is an awful judge of character as Prime Minister and has not been keeping a close eye on Ministerial activities given one of his chosen and most senior Ministers has been continuously donkey deep in this kind of politics for years.

            Tracey: Was Savage doing this off his own bat or was he given the OK from higher up, that’s the question? Can anyone understand why the newspaper would do that? All I can think of is that perhaps it was just to scratch Slater’s back so that the favour might be returned later with a big news tip-off.

            Bear in mind, newspapers often discover loads of seriously damaging info on people that they can’t print because they can’t prove it and would risk having their backsides sued off.

            So presumably they were giving Slater some pretty heavy, but unsubstantiated, stuff. That’s not ethical, spreading unsubstantiated info to muck-rakers like Slater. That’s not how real journalists or real newspapers should behave. What else have they given Slater? This could have damaging ramifications — and not just for Savage himself.

            I know the paper’s commentators get a lot of stick from the left for their alleged right-wing bias, but this is an even worse look for them. It will be disappointing if the decision to help Slater was made higher up the food chain than Savage.

        Winstons Peter’s coup allegation meant Key had to act despite the risks of Collins turning on him.

        Key knew, at an arm’s length of course, exactly what Collins was doing.

        He asked Wany Eagleson to get a piece of evidence that he could use as an excuse to kill off Collins.

        There is nothing innocent about the letter arriving “anonymously” on Waynes Eagleson’s desk.
        Key asked for a knife, Eagleson sourced it, Key stabbed Collins.

      Timing. Saturday midday release, when most people were out enjoying their weekends, and Slater was back in the country, and the more favorable Q&A with Hooten was scheduled after The Nation had gone to air.

    Key looks like Nixon did in his final days when press swamped him after the evidence came out that he had lied and was involved in the Watergate break-in.

    I watched the daily grilling through two years while there, and he always looked up beat until getting caught.

    Key looks like being the next cab off the rank, as he has the worry of what next is going to turn up next, besides him looking shaken & very shabby.

      I think you are wrong. If anything, more dirty trick revelations will surface, there will be more internal chaos and daggers drawn, more ‘cover ups’….but it is always the cover ups that gets them.

      I have a feeling that Key knows much more about the Collin emails and other whaledump stuff now from ‘confessions’ from back side saving crooks and anonymous leaks trying to damage one another within the various camps in the National caucus and party! Next two weeks will be interesting!

    Key has called her resignation honourable. The last word to describe his or her behaviour is honourable. The right use a completely different dictionary and compass to the rest of the world.

    Damn after her outburst about this being “The Labour Party website” the other day, I have been writing a post in my head to demonstrate why we don’t bother to perform any “cyber-bullying”. Just expressing what we actually think is bad enough and the NZLP has nothing to do with it (many there would like us gone).

    But like all newbies to the art of expressing herself in the electronic domain she has predictably fallen over her own hubris way too early.

    But this isn’t a surprise after reading her tweets for a while. Another unthinking idiot who spends more time looking at the power of the medium rather than its constraints and risks.

    She should have started developing her skills 35 years ago rather than in the last 7 or 8 years.

    Question: Will Mrs. Crusher stay on as a List MP (if she were to win her electorate) and could she weasel her way back into government if National were to win.

    As for winning, i am not of betting kind, and while i hope that Team Key and his Goons will disappear for a few years, i am not holding my breath. Sadly there is a large part of the NZ Population that have no issue voting/rooting for the bully, it makes them feel stronger I guess.

              Pair sentenced for theft and false statements
              Gregory Alan Arnott (51) and Mark James Whelan (41) have been sentenced in the Auckland District Court today following charges laid by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).
                
              Mr Arnott entered guilty pleas in June to offences under the Crimes Act, comprising five charges of theft by person in a special relationship and five charges of making a false statement. He was sentenced today to six years’ imprisonment.

              At trial in July, Mr Whelan faced 10 Crimes Act charges comprising three of theft by person in a special relationship and seven of making a false statement. He pleaded guilty after giving evidence at his trial and was sentenced today to two years’ imprisonment. His sentence is to be served cumulatively with a prior sentence of four years and four months’ imprisonment which Mr Whelan received in May 2013. This earlier sentence was in relation to fraudulently obtaining loans totalling $4.9 million in a previous SFO prosecution.

              The SFO’s charges against the pair related to their involvement with Derivatek New Zealand Limited (Derivatek) and Global Futures Trading Limited (Global Futures).

          Prediction markets are deliberately open to manipulation and insider trading, the theory being that every piece of information will result in a more accurate prediction.

          If someone bids up a prediction to levels that are unrealistic, it becomes an ‘easy win’ opportunity for others to correct it back down to the realistic level.

          Doesn’t quite work for iPredict given the small size of the market, though.

    Just a couple if quick thoughts on all this.

    Regardless of her own extensive involvement, I suspect that Judith’s resignation is also about taking the heat over everyone else’s involvement. Once she is gone, Key and the National Party’s enablers in the MSM can draw a line under Dirty Politics and then go back to business as usual. Collins will take the hit on behalf of the establishment and will be well looked after. Consider them inoculated.

    Also, leaving aside he had been caught at it, having read all the whaledump conversations to date, Cam Slater really does have a fine mind for all of this. I have seen him defend his online obnoxious bloviating self as something of a caricature as adopted by many who venture opinions online, but he is a very very smart player and I wonder if at least some of his media mates only realize now how easily they have been played.

    But this seems to indicate some deep-seated worries in the National Party. They are worried, and for good reason, that they will not be returned post-Sept 20. This shenanagins is the Nat people shaping up for the next years in the wilderness.

    They are fighting already because they see the election is lost.

      Imo, dont get too excited. Someone in the nats saw the distraction going on and on, and so gave key something to act on, to get the strategy back on track. Gap betw big and poor is way higher in peoples mind than the economy, THAT is a much bigger problem for Nats. With collins gone they can return to lying about the economy and lying about the damage labour greens will do.

        This didn’t come from Whaledump, so where did it come from?

        I think Nat polling was showing Collins was becoming a liability, and David Collins was on the up. I suspect that this email came from Jason Ede or Matthew Hooten and was released as a way of making Key look decisive (needed something new against Collins without giving any credit to Hager or Peters) as well as restricting coverage of Cunliffe talking policy.

        I know that Hooten is mentioned in the email, but there is no evidence that he actually did game ipredict. Seems a way he can deny knowing anything about it. More likely Ede though.

      The book has been labelled a “left-wing smear campaign” by the Prime Minister, but Mr Farrar – while disputing some of the Mr Hager’s claims – says it has been a “good catalyst” to improving “standards in the blogosphere.

                  Forgot Hotchin was one of Carrick Graham’s clients.

                  So that might be the leaking of SFO info to someone they are investigating right there.

                  According to a Herald article Graham started working for Hotchin around February 2011, latest email dated 10th of May 2011.

        Quite shocking to many right-wingers, I imagine, that John Key is making political capital (at least some supporters of Key seem to think he has) out of releasing a stolen email.

        First Hager does it to make money and now Key has done it to try to win an election.

        Such people must be livid.

        After all – the email was stolen!

        Either that or it was passed on by one of the recipients – all of whom must be implicated in the very ‘operation’ he is sacking Collins for participating in.

        In that case, will Key reveal his ‘source’ (directly to the people of New Zealand or to the investigation) or does he now believe that he’s a journalist who can hide his sources?

    He looks like a possum caught in the headlights about to be hit by a car. Unfortunately for him I think that car is an Election 2014 model that is not going to swerve right to try and go around him leaving him standing.     1. Key has said this latest thing is the worst. Seems he is now acting as if the emails are genuine, then; and
    2. All very well to step her down, long after parliament closed and there’s only a few weeks until the election. If this is serious enough to step her down, then it ought to be serious enough to move her down the party list. If not, then it isn’t much more than a leave of absence until September 29th.

    “Ms Collins had referred former SFO chief executive Adam Feeley to the State Services Commission for celebrating the laying of charges against failed company Bridgecorp with a bottle of champagne recovered from Bridgecorp’s former headquarters in 2010.

    The Commission found that this was ill-advised and poor judgement.”

    The State Service Commission acted extremely ill-advisedly and showed appalling judgement to do anything other than rejects Collins’ referral out. It was frivilous. This suggests to me that Senior Civil Servants were gutless in responding to pressure from the PM’s office and from Collins. The Commission of enquiry should include the SCC in its scope.
