Trump or Palin for the US Presidency?

The idea of either of these people becoming president of the United States would make me want to find another planet to live on. From the Independent:

The number of potential Republican candidates for the White House continues to grow and grow with billionaire Donald Trump being the latest to say he may throw his hat into the ring.

Mr Trump, 68, who said he may make a run for the presidency only to decide against it both in 2008 and 2012, said over the weekend he was “seriously thinking” about a campaign. He claimed he was the only person who could run the country.

“I’m the one person who can make this country great again, that’s all I know,” he told reporters after a speech on Saturday in Iowa, whose primary caucuses kick off the formal presidential election next January. “Nobody else can.”

“It can’t be Mitt, because Mitt ran and failed. Mitt had his chance. He should have won and he choked. You don’t want to give a choker a second chance,” he said, according to CNN. “You can’t have Bush. The last thing we need is another Bush.”

“If I run for president, and if I win, I would totally succeed in creating jobs, defeating ISIS, and stopping the Islamic terrorists, reducing the budget deficit, securing our southern border, stopping nuclear weapons in Iran and elsewhere,” he said.

But wait there is more:

Mr Trump’s comments came after another conservative favourite, Sarah Palin, suggested she may also be open to running for the presidency.

The former governor of Alaska, and running mate of John McCain in an unsuccessful 2008 presidential campaign, said: “When you have a servant’s heart, when you know that there is opportunity to do all you can to put yourself forward in the name of offering service, anybody would be interested.”

Palin is back to her mumbling stuttering foot in mouth best.  She recently was photographed holding a sign saying “fuc_ Michael Moore”.  The photo will attract attention because both “o”s were made to look like cross hairs.  It seems that Palin has not learned.

Other potential candidates apart from Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush include Rick Perry, Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum whose infamy includes being the subject of one of the most infamous google bombs of all time.

In celebration of Palin’s awfulness I thought I would end this post with the Awful Truth episode where Michael Moore tried to decide on which presidential candidate he should support in 2000 by seeing who was prepared to get into a travelling mosh pit that he had organised.  Video is below.  Enjoy.

Warren has repeatedly said she won’t run. She’s probably doing a lot more good in the Senate and having her out of commission while she campaigns for a year would probably be just what the bankers want. She’d make a good Secretary of the Treasury or Attorney General, though.

      • phillip ure 1.1.1

yes..we know she has said that..

..but if she said now she was running..that wd become the story..

..and wd interfere with all the other work she is doing..

        ..never say never..eh..?

…and when the time is right..

US/NZ dually here. My very brief thoughts on the upcoming presidential elections…

Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, another Bush (Jeb), Rand Paul, Donald Trump (WTF!), Rick “Oops” Perry, Mitt Rmoney, Rick Santorum…wow, there could be more as the season progresses. Excellent! Clown College 2016 edition. Thanks for the laughs, Repubs.

The Dems have Hillary Clinton. Cripes, it looks as if I’ll really have to pinch my nose to fill in the bubble next to her name. My vote wouldn’t matter anyway as I’m registered in a deeply red state.

You don’t think Chris Christie will at least challenge in the primaries?

      • DS 2.1.1

Bridgegate screwed Christie. The photo of him hugging Obama won’t go well with the Republican base either.

    • Chooky 2.2

the thought of another Bush makes me shudder

      • Ovid 2.2.1

Bush Senior in retrospect wasn’t too bad – he was the one who coined the term “voodoo economics”. His kid, though, is certainly the worst president since the Second World War.

      Another US/NZ dually here.
      Live in a blue state.
      Am a big lefty!
Don’t want the War Monger Generalismo Clinton ( as Ralph Nader calls her.) as next president.
Warren is too inexperienced. Been there with Obama.
      We are toast.
Only one thing is sure…more War!

The idea of either of these people becoming president of the United States would make me want to find another planet to live on.

It has the same effect on me! A truly OMG! occasion. But then anyone else on the right would probably just as bad. Then again the democrats aren’t a great deal better 🙁 – It truly is a stuffed up country.

That is about all that needs to be said of US Republicans. None of them are connected to reality in any way, shape or form.

    USA

Worst advertisement for democracy on the planet

No wonder so many people don’t want it. The Russians must laugh their heads off, especially Putin …..

    • Colonial Rawshark 9.1

Given that their Republic was originally founded excluding women and Blacks from voting, structured with an appointed Senate, an Electoral College and multiple other devices to prevent popular power in favour of a ruling elite, they were never a true democracy to begin with.

    • Rawsharkosaurus 9.2

The American system was state of the art… for 230 years ago, when the nearest the rest of the world had to a democracy was Westminster (rotten boroughs and all) and much of the rest of the world still ran on the divine right of kings. The American system has just missed too many upgrades and bug fixes. It would be like setting up Lynx to run on Windows 3.1 and using it as an advertisement for the internet…

Are the Republicans still exploring ways to kick people off the electoral rolls?

I offer Roy Zimmerman on the topic:

Are the Republicans still exploring ways to kick people off the electoral rolls?

Mainly Blacks. Hispanics are less Democratic leaning.

Nonetheless in the US voters still only have a choice between the Banksters Party and the Other Banksters Party.

If Elizabeth Warren doesn’t run for the Democrats, I’d like to see Martin O’Malley run. He is the most progressive, after Warren, but not nearly as progressive as her. Ideally I’d like to see Bernie Sanders run for Democrats but that wouldn’t happen in a million years.

However, it seems like Hillary will scoop the nomination, as 2/3 of Democrats support her:
    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/us/2016_democratic_presidential_nomination-3824.html

Hillary beats Republican possibilities by huge margins:

Romney and Bush are the top 2 GOP contenders:
    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/us/2016_republican_presidential_nomination2-5255.html
Boring GOP Establishment types. Apparently Romney has been flip-flopping again and now is going to try to position himself as a progressive Republican, like he did when he was governor of Massachusetts: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/01/mitt-romney-progressive-champion

  12. Northsider 13

    Neither will run.
They like being in the news. They can slag everyone else’s actions and not have to do deiver anything themselves. They have ther feet up while others slog.

  13. meconism 14

Palin may run, if only to raise cash through her PAC for her retirement.

  14. sir pat 15

well after reading that im going to have a hot caustic shower followed by a good foot soak in battery acid and bang my head on a nail studded wall until wots left of my hair drys…..all this much more favourable than those two in charge of a dying superpower

  15. nadis 17

The problem the Republicans have is that to win the primary you have to appeal to a very narrow demographic of morons, reactionaries, fundamentalists and conspiracy theorists, who despite claims to the country on this blog, only make up a very small portion of the US.

The person who wins the primary is then generally un-electable in the presidential election.

In my opinion, the exception to the rule in recent years was McCain who got past the crazies primarily on his veteran background, that his main rival was Romney and Hickabee/Ron Paul split the crazies vote.

And I don’t think Warren will run – this time at least – the Democrat money obviously sees Clinton as the best chance this time round. I imagine they would then position Elizabeth Warren as something like Secretary of State to give her some international chops, or Secretary if Commerce to see if a reform push works – setting her up for a run in 2020 or 2024 depending on Hilary’s success.

But at the the end of the day the parties in the US should be renamed as:

    Republicans > Reactionaries
    Democrats > Conservatives

    • Colonial Rawshark 17.1

Warren is never going to be able to fundraise from the banks and the corporates so she is out from the start.
