  1. Good to see Little up there with his candidate tonight.

  2. Hateatea 2

Stacey Kirk at Stuff says they are going to be ‘pouring over the results’. What or who are they going to pour the results over??

“We’ll be pouring over the figures tonight to bring you fresh updates and exclusive pieces in the Sunday Star Times and on Stuff tomorrow.”

All their poring or even ‘pouring’ isn’t going to result in anything to put a smile on NACT faces anytime soon.

    • felix 2.1

Yeah I had a chuckle at “pouring”. Freudian slip, perhaps? There’ll be plenty of pouring in Russell tonight.

  3. NZSage 3

    This made me smile…

    Toby Manhire ‏@toby_etc

Might be best now if the prime minister could declare that the Black Caps have “zero chance” of winning the World Cup.

  4. Had a look at Bryce Edwards’ compilation of tweets. Christ, Hoots is being a slimy little weasel making sure that he’s not associated with the losers – just like Key.

    • felix 4.1

To be fair he hasn’t exactly been plumping for them through the whole process, so he’s a different species of weasel to Key.

  5. SMILIN 5

Just shows a govt that continues to hold the country to ransom with a free market monetary system cant buy the by- election this time and maybe the power of democracy is turning the tide of blind allegiance to a party with no substance for the country it governs. And that it has no right to treat it as though it owns it or is able to manipulate the laws of forever without consequences.

  6. the pigman 6

One theory that makes sense with a few too many wines on board is that northland is a microcosm of a country experiencing a critical mass of disillusionment and betrayal by the nats and their dirty, filthy politics.

Then again, general polls still put them well ahead…

Either way, my guess is the likes of slater and hooton who have undermined the nats, Sabin and their candidate in concert are currently involved in a bit of succession planning, and what bigger threat to Collins than Joyce and English? Didn’t see her visiting in Nland did we?

  7. just saying 7

Damn, no Open Mike up yet.
So I’ll tack this on here.
My little observation about something that was different about this by-election – the pictures and commentary of public opposition to this government. It’s something that is seldom seen in the media. One picture sticks in my mind of protestors holding big banners in the foreground with Key approaching in a smirking walkabout with his minders. I think the biggest banner said something like “Mike Sabin? – ShonKey”.

There’s never been any shortage of people who loathe this regime. It seems, to me at least, that the good people of Northland may have also been encouraged to more openly express their anger not just by the publicity of a by-election and the unique circumstances surrounding it, but by a candidate who was able to be unequivocal in opposing the government on issues like dirty politics and the TPPA, for example. Mealy-mouthed weasel words will never work for the left. If Little and Labour could stick to the “cut the crap” approach rather than just voice it as an empty platitude, it could lead begin to lead public opinion and start setting the agenda. If it wants to actually change the agenda that is. It’s never really clear what they want to do.

    • Molly 7.1

That placard you refer to is held by the indomitable Penny Bright who comments here regularly.

I agree with your second paragraph. Would like to see more clarity from Labour over what policies they are rock solid on.

    • saveNZ 7.2

Labour needs to watch and learn from Winston. In particular NZ First stance on dirty politics and TPPA and the by pass of MSM in his campaigning. Get in the bus, get out there, and go for it with CREDIBLE polices and a wit to uncover the despicable behaviour of the Nats.

The redwashing of Labour and the left (like greenwashing) has to stop!

Labour must go back to it’s roots of free education, free health, nuclear free and NZ sovereignty intact. NO TPPA, no secret deals, not selling off the country for a potential promise of an overseas $$. No spying, no warmongering, no corruption. A fair go for everyone. Our government should be working only for NZ and their constituents not Washington and the ‘Democatic Union” far right interests.

From the conservatives in Northland to the left of centre lefties, the voters have rejected those policies and the sell off of our country by trade ministers and political parties.

Next TPP march I want to see Labour MP’s.

Likewise the Greens need to get more active, not just in parliament but on the big issues that will ultimately effect to a much greater extent the people of NZ and the environment. Things like the TPP and dirty politics.

There needs to be more collaboration between the parties so that national MP’s don’t slip through split voting which is not what the voters intended.

Voters are sending a message. They sent it to Labour last election and to National in Northland this election.

In fact voters are actually sending out messages all around the world, rejecting incumbent parties that are failing their countries interests for personal or political gain.

The voters can adapt, can the politicians?

  8. Rodel 8

My favourite quote from Winston, to media interviewers….

“You all know. I’m famous for my modesty.”

  9. vto 9

As Osbourne was left alone in defeat by his colleagues…

…so too will Key be left vastly alone when his defeat arrives shortly… and I am very much looking forward to seeing that

    you reap what you sow

  10. Atiawa 10

The importance of the party vote campaign was relegated to the back seat in the Northland by-election but if the Left is to learn anything from yesterdays result it should be that MMP is predominantly about securing the party vote preference of voters.
2017 will become a very strategic election campaign for the main parties.

  11. saveNZ 11

Also pretty despicable that no senior MP’s were with Osbourne in his defeat, after swarming around like flies during his campaign.

I agree, good one, Andrew Little for supporting your candidate!

National are Morally bankrupt and the good rural people of Northland have rejected that!

  12. Pasupial 12

My favourite quote was from Turei:

“That John Key thought his bridge and broadband bribes would work in Northland just shows how out of touch he is with ordinary Kiwis.

    “Hungry kids can’t eat bridges.

Though Osbourne having to consult with Joyce before conceding was pretty risible!

  13. Tracey 13

Osbourne and Slater spend Saturday night on the mat… John Key spent it sniffing jock straps.

  14. Tracey 14

And still, The Maori Party says nothing…
