This behavior has been endemic in Africa and the ME long before the West was even a thing. There is no doubt the 'West' has its fair share of lunatics but it is certainly more enlightened and at least, strives for peace.
I've updated the blog acknowledging that they've now uploaded policy (see also new graph and comments down the bottom) [lprent: Thanks for the good work. I was trying to think about how I could express the difference between the pile of backed up policy ...
I agree. I'm all for strategic use of MMP (and the left getting in on the action, given that the next election could potentially be won by National's two or three cups of tea). But an alliance between these two seems bizarre. Anyway, you should repost this...
http://cutyourhair.wordpress.com/2013/03/01/where-is-christchurch-in-the-labour-reshuffle/ This is a shameless plug for my own blog, where I've noted promotions, demotions, regions and factions/cliques... on the latter I'm not too confident, so anyone who ...
Hi Karol, good points. I've blogged on it here: http://cutyourhair.wordpress.com/2012/12/20/the-ideology-of-middle-class-struggle/
Pathetic. How much more damage will this anti-democratic, anti-left, anyone-but-Cunliffe, Key-rather-than-Cunliffe, neo-liberal/'third way'/don't-know-what-we-believe/scared-of-anyone-on-the-left-who-does, corrupted power-before-principle boomer(+suck-up)...
If he hadn't been elected by a general election, but general elections had now been introduced, real leadership would mean calling one. Hiding behind the rules would be not calling a general election because the rules only ensured the next prime minister ...
+1
The simple difference, Matthew, is that Shearer wasn't elected under the new rules - and if the new rules had been in place he most likely wouldn't have been elected. It's nothing like your analogy of the elected prime minister, because in this case the ...
Puddleglum and Tracey, you make interesting points and quite challenging to my somewhat flippant considerations of strategically joining the party. I'm not sure if I fully agree with your description of what you call the 'marketer' approach to life... I ...
That's the interesting thing about our parliamentary system actually - yeah it's proportional representation, but there are still two "major parties", so there are only two realistic contenders for prime minister in the forseeable future. So, like it or ...
It's partly tongue in cheek. I've considered joining for a (possible) chance to help pick the (hopefully) next prime minister. You make a good point about the US military, and it could make for an interesting analogy whereby the membership are the local ...
Sounds good. Maybe I'll stay a member longer than February. How will the policy platform be enforced, ie what ways will the membership have to make sure the caucus support that policy?
"The onus is on him to make sure that his presence doesn’t split the party". The assumption there is that keeping the party together is more important than making the party (and the country) represent the ideas, policies and strategies of the membership......
Sorry to keep flogging the horse but it doesn't seem quite dead yet. If you round down to 21 then the MSM are right that the other side need 14, right? (I'm thinking of it like a game of 500 where Shearer has bid 21 tricks so his opponents need 14 to stop ...
Do you mean these comments? http://thestandard.org.nz/labour-chooses-democracy/comment-page-1/#comment-549057 So 13 are required to trigger a wider leadership vote, and 22 are required to prevent it? Can we confirm this? Because the MSM are saying 14.
Or 13, depending on how "60% plus one" is defined (remember it's 60% plus one not 40% plus one). 60% is 20.4, so 60% plus one could mean 21 or 22... (which means the other side needs 14 or 13 respectively)... Anyone know?
Well, the mainstream media have got what they want... David "I don't read blogs" Shearer remains in power... For now. It's amazing how the media and the Shearer camp could go from "it's all a storm in a blogger's teacup" to "there is a sinister conspiracy ...
It's becoming more and more obvious that "Anyone but Cunliffe" effectively means "Key rather than Cunliffe". It's disgraceful that any Labour MPs are able to get away with this kind of treason to their party and their (apparent) ideals in the name of petty...
Just popped on to this website, did I miss something or is this website run by labour supporters? I was trying to find out who to "smart-vote" for so Jim doesn't get back in, but then George Darroch's post almost convinced me to vote for him. I guess the ...
