What about kindness, compassion, generosity and solidarity? They seem like good reasons to me. This is also a good learning/training opportunity for our firefighters to keep their specialised skills sharp.
it’s like some weird psychedelic Orwellian dream Has Oceania always been at war with Eurasia?
And the mismanagement of the fisheries. MPI is not fit for purpose.
I agree that the end result is the same, and this is a very visible tax for most people. I was more pointing out the ‘new tax’ gotcha that some were trying to run with is a bit lame.
That is not what today’s announcement was about. The Auckland Regional Fuel tax also replaced a rate payer transport levy. A neutral tax switch?
Is a new tax the same as an increase to an existing tax? I would argue there is a difference, though others may find the difference too subtle for whatever reason.
My understanding is that compulsory acquisition via the public works act is usually a last resort. Otherwise why is NZTA currently negotiating rather than acquiring? So you agree that there were no pre election promises regarding the delayed Ashhurst ...
Alwyn, are you complaining that the Labour/NZ First government have not confiscated the required land to speed up construction? From the linked article it sounds like the delays are caused by NZTA negotiating in good faith to acquire the land. Do you have ...
If you haven’t already you should check out the episode ‘Metalhead’ from the latest season of Black Mirror - a nice dystopian nod to Boston Dynamics.

I look forward to the spin this to frame the the dam as a 'positive' - backup drinking water supply?
I canceled paying into my KiwiSaver after about a year. Frankly I don't trust the stock market Ponzi scheme to be around for the next 30 odd years. If I could find one I would pay into a KiwiSaver fund that specialised in physical gold.
No Right Turn has been doing some excellent blogging the last couple of weeks/months. Thank you Idiot/Savant! I am particularly enjoying the continuing saga of the 'Open Government' omnishambles.

Wasn't there talk that Key and Carter had privately promised that the incoming National government would resume live stock exports?
Sounds like his campaign has pivoted the slogan to 'Make America *Safe* Again' Poor Americans, you'd think that all those guns would make them feel safe.
I missed the bit where Labour says that renting is considered an evil, where was that?
Looks like link a minor case of link rot. The post can be found here -> http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10586592
Excellent, this is surely a policy that the whole opposition can show some unity on. How about a referendum on legalising recreational marijuana and hemp?
Was the multi million dollar refurbishment publicly known when the contract was signed? If not, could it possibly have been discussed at a Cabinet Club meeting, thereby giving a certain hotel chain an opportunity to adjust their tender to be more ...
Watching Parliament TV on Tuesday, I found this exchange interesting: ... Dr Kennedy Graham: Will the Prime Minister commit not to introduce and pass any Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement-related legislation until the US Congress has ratified the ...
Interesting that this document is dated 2013, well after the Snowden documents. I wonder where it was sourced from?
