There’s plenty of comment about Davey’s/National’s Billboards here and at Blogblog so I’ll not bore you with my analysis of these dreadful things. ‘Cos as you know I’m a man who likes to know what things cost.
And guess what? I’ve done quite a few billboards and if Dave’s getting them for $7000, then he’s getting a deal fo’sure.
From the pictures it looks like he’s doing a 12x3m in Auckland, and two 6x3m boards in Wellington and Tauranga respectively. I priced these using oggi’s brilliant locater tool and got the following:
Auckland 12×3 corner of Carbine Road and South Eastern Highway: $5000 per month with oggi.
Wellington Central City 6×3 – $3500 with oggi (I couldn’t find the exact site but the CBD boards are all very similarly priced)
Tauranga – Hewletts Road 6×3 – $3000 with isite.
Now I’ve used isite and oggi because they are the ones with prices on their sites but in my experience Look are around the same price. Now these add up to $11500 which is a lot more than David’s claim of $7000. When you add between $300-$600 to install these billboards and $500+ to get the skins made up then he’s spending some serious money here.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not begrudging Dave spending his own money (well, the money of Don Brash and assorted National/Act party operators and Kiwiblog rabble) but his numbers don’t add up unless he got a really really good deal and I’ve never been able to get a 40% discount from any billboard company or ad-buyer I’ve ever used.
As an aside it’s probably worth noting the Kill the Bill campaign has a little under $7000 on its donations list.
UPDATE: Kiwiblogblog’s catalogued DPF’s five different stories in the last 24 hours on exactly how much the campaign cost.
Your question is more complicated than you think Burt.
One thing I’ve wondered is how they’ll handle politically motivated advertising initiated by someone who owns a radio station, print studio, etc.
Is there a standard figure for work done, run size, time spent, air-time donated, etc.
I think they’ll be looking more at what’s put out before they start asking you how much you spent. Anything else would encourage the respondant to lie or otherwise fiddle the numbers.
Thats strange Nih – Its my house, I’ve owned it for 11 years and according to you I don’t live there. Funny huh.
But wait……..
thats right you’re the great detective aren’t you? Just you’ve been WRONG the few times I’ve seen you try to pull it off. Well your scorecard hasn’t got any better.
unless……..
now you’ve been called and your little shrivelled bollocks have been exposed for exactly what they are you are trying to say that I’m lying to help you save face. Nah what sort of wanker would do that?
Thanks too nih, from further up the thread.
“Last one I promise.”
Incorrigible!

Thankyou for the English lesson, it’s refreshing to get such constructive debate in the same comment as “DPF lied’. Excellent work Mr. Sod, burt will achieve one day.
I think I’ve got it sorted Mike, if IrishBill says one thing and DPF says another then DPF is telling lies. I’m getting it, don’t question it… umm – is it like a religious thing?
Prophet, I think the game may be over for tonight. Why don’t you give it up too and get some sleep?
Prophet – I didn’t try to appeal to your better nature because I didn’t see the point.
Yeah Rob, you’re right, you and your boys are definitely on a higher plane than little old me.(refer thread above)
Say Burt – did you catch TV1 news tonight? Excellent clip on the National billboards don’t you think?
Back on topic for a moment – this comment might explain WHY I made my opening comment that IrishBill thought inappropriate (fair enough, but what the heck do you think about the rest of the thread then?)
PS: It’s none of our F-ing business how much private citisens spend to publish their views unless of course you need to keep tabs so that if they cross the $120K threshold you can slap them down and say enough!
Yep Burt, keep tabs, and then seize assets and ensure the proof is forthcoming. As mentioned in further detail here: Mangled Carta
Hopefully, IrishBill, you may not see my initial comment as so off topic now?
So you’re saying you ARE the Reverend Ian Bayliss?

What are you doing following people around on the internet harassing them? You would be kicked out from the church for behaving the way you do.
Of course it’s not you. Occam’s razor cuts to the bone.
Aah, silly me. That says Tawa and you said Newtown.
I guess I’ll be dropping by to say hi after all.
Aww, shit. Now I feel bad. I got worried I’m going to make you paranoid and mess with your sleep or something. I’m not really going to come and get you bro. Just messin’ with ya.
I do think adopting an offensive name like “the prophet” and giving out your address is a really bad idea though. Perhaps we can have the post with his address in it removed?
I am seriously confused with this whole thread.
One can argue the merits of putting up these billboards in the first place and may this well be an own goal by DPF and his coalition.
But really what is the issue with the cost of them. Even if he had said it cost $50.00 but in reality it cost $500,000.00, what does it matter.
People will read the billboards and use their own brains. Some will agree, some will disagree some will laugh. But besides the half dozen odd people on here who are faoming, who else in the real world gives a dead rats willy what it cost, what the promoters said it cost, what it actually cost or anything else to do with money.
I think some people need to get some perspective.
You weren’t a supporter of the EFB Razor. Fair enough. Like most people you probably thought it didn’t make sense – because it doesn’t from certain perspectives.
We want the supposed poster-boy for political blogging to make sense. We want consistency and truth to be in play when he represents the rest of us as a medium.
Not being able to work out how much fucking money he spent on a controversial advertising campaign related to spending doesn’t reflect well on the blogosphere.
I am in full support of people being able to get a few others together – and let’s face it, the FSC is a small group – and to make themselves heard. That’s awesome, regardless of the infantile message that was put out today.
What’s unfortunate is he’s sort of ruining it for the rest of us. I’m expecting blog-born movements to be forever tainted by the tactless, tasteless, sore loser propaganda that’s been bouncing from billboard to billboard all day.
So. What’s the problem with farrar being criticised by his peers?
Sorry. That should have read “Like most people from Kiwiblog you probably thought it didn’t make sense”.
Thank goodness you’re in the minority.
Rob “Mike, nih, you folk are usually great. I don’t know what’s going on here tonight, but I think we’re hitting Kiwiblog lows (for the first time).”
Wow Rob, you haven’t being paying much attention over the last couple of months. This sort of trash is pretty regular for Robbo and Nil.
I still think its king of sad that H1 can kind-of laugh off the billboard (what choice did she have after all) while you lads are foaming at the mouth over whether they cost 15 or 20 grand. How much did the new Party website cost eh – that was taxpayer funded to boot!
Hey DS – Why do you think DPF can’t get his numbers straight?
I think I’ve got it sorted Mike, if IrishBill says one thing and DPF says another then DPF is telling lies. I’m getting it, don’t question it. umm – is it like a religious thing?
No Burt if DPF publishes one figure and then tells the media another (and then another) then something’s amiss. I’ve got my hypothisis, I was just wondering what yours was. Oh and Burt, I seem to recall a whole lot of you righties telling Bill he was wrong about the DVD costing. But y’know – it turned out he got that right too. Basing your argument on facts, Burt. You should try it sometime.
Blubber has long been a supporter of Fiji’s Frank as a saviour of his people and then he and the waddler put up a poster comparing him and Clark.
Well, this made for an interesting read… WTF?
I’d like to make a point that I think is most telling (and I hope others will help make this point to the papers and so on, if they think it’s relevant).
DPF, and the “Free Speech Coalition” came out swinging about megaphones and placards and so-on. If you recall, that was the crux of their opposition to the bill.
Now, their protest is a money intensive campaign. So it becomes clear – and exactly what everyone knows their real issue is – the right of the rich to spend huge amounts in an attempt to influence voters.
It was never about democracy, never about free speech.
I suspect I’m preaching to the choir here (obviously with a few exceptions).
The free speech coalition is dead, long live the fee speech coalition!
Maybe the Tauranga billboard is owned by Bob Clarkson – he owns a few around here.
He also got into a bit of bother last election by using the billboard spaces for self-promotion but declaring the market cost of these spaces.
whoops!!!!!!!!
that should read but NOT declaring the market cost of these spaces
