everyone knows that the ancients knew the world is spherical and it’s surely irrelevant to the point of the post but if makes you feel good.

Beat me to it, Sanctuary.

The idea that people in the middle ages, dark ages, or any time in the last 2000 years have considered the Earth flat just doesn’t bear analysis. Pliny the Elder wrote of it in “Natural History”. Going further back, Eratosthenes didn’t just know it was spherical, but calculated its circumference (perhaps to within 2%).

Very funny, but unfortunately Galileo was tried for supporting Copernican heliocentrism, not for saying the earth is round.
