The New Zealand labour movement used to have its own newspaper. A group of us thought that now might be a good time for it to be digitally reborn: The Standard v2.0 - now in a new format The Standard v3.0

and the cartoon doesn't say galileo came up with the spherical earth. if you like, imagine that the journo is conflating heliocentrism and spherical earth like they do weather and climate

Beat me to it, Sanctuary.

The idea that people in the middle ages, dark ages, or any time in the last 2000 years have considered the Earth flat just doesn't bear analysis. Pliny the Elder wrote of it in "Natural History". Going further back, Eratosthenes didn't just know it was spherical, but calculated its circumference (perhaps to within 2%).

Very funny, but unfortunately Galileo was tried for supporting Copernican heliocentrism, not for saying the earth is round.
