Anyone who has been involved in left-wing politics will know what an intellectual force Jordan Carter is. I first met him when he was President of Young Labour about a decade ago – he went on to be the first Rainbow sector representative on Labour’s New Zealand Council, and is now the secretary of the Policy Council. I expect he will be a member of the 6th Labour Government. Actually, I know he will be.
Jordan has written an excellent piece on Just Left outlining Labour’s history of political change, and why Labour MPs should support Louisa Wall’s Marriage Equality Bill. The whole piece is brilliantly written and very well thought out. Jordan makes the case that changing attitudes towards Pacific peoples shows that Labour can successfully drive social change.
I hope the parallels that Jordan draws between Pacific peoples and LGBT New Zealanders are not lost on some members of Labour’s caucus.
