Hon Tariana Turia has announced today that she will step down at the next election. She has served as a Minister in various portfolios in two different governments. We had our moments in the past, but it was very good to be able to thank her personally and profoundly ten days ago for what she has done as the Minister for Disability Issues at the recent Be.Leadership awards in the Grand Hall in Parliament. As she said on RadioNZ this morning, she can put her hand on her heart and say that what she did she did for the people.

Disclosure: I would like to advise that I will be working for Labour again,  as a contracted part-time  Advisor in the office of the Labour Leader.

When Clare Curran talked about “reigning in” The Standard that probably wasn’t quite what she had in mind 😀

    • Neoleftie 1.1

More like the moderate standardistias are providing a balancing point.
First plank in inclusiveness first bouquet for shearer and one hopes Robertson.

  2. Colonial Weka 2

    Nice one Mike.

“As she said on RadioNZ this morning, she can put her hand on her heart and say that what she did she did for the people.”

A lot of terrible crimes have been committed in the name of the people. Lest we forget her inane views on family planning as just one example.

  4. ColonialPete 4

So that means Te Tai Hauāuru is in play in 2014, huh?

  5. ak 5

Hope it’s a pretty big part-time Mike. Ae her heart deserves her hand, and ours. Ta rawa atu, Tari. You killed the assimilation myth and fatally wounded racist Aotearoa itself with one selfless offering. Forever up there with Mickey Savage himself, now take the peace and joy you deserve.

  6. Neoleftie 6

Actzully I for one thought she had bags of courage honesty and a shell of toughness to the old girl.
She took a stand and her action were for the or her people. Wee salute.
Now mike smith party watch dog or a party inclusive moment….I hear trouble with the rank and files…big bold moody moves.
Time for a cups tea folks.
We have our progress and huge gains in inclusiveness wide open affiliates status and more creative say from members…what more do we want now.

Shearer and Moira in respective position lead our party but we as self proclaimed lefties must IMHO be not so demanding of change.
    Look at shearer signalling change.
New direction hand on govt….what more can we ask for at this time.
We the party faithful or left commentators must take responsibility for our own actions deeds and words, not like CC as a point in case….where does CV hide I wonder.
Time for a unified reasoned voice vs the Tories .
We need unity and we need focus.
We need desperately a victory for the long suffering people…

…as a contracted part-time Advisor in the office of the Labour Leader.

Good. While you’re at it, please educate them about 21st century peer to peer “social” networking and how it affects intra-party communications. Oh and how party activist (and rapidly heading to ex-activist) members think outside of the beltway. They could sure as hell use some advice on those 🙂

    • As long as Mike does not have the ability to see the email addresses of commentators or pass these email addresses to the mother ship I am sure we are all fine …

      • Colonial Weka 7.1.1

Speaking of which…. Lynn, are the email addresses permanently recorded, or is just the one in current use visible? eg anyone concerned could use a gmail account instead. I’m asking about ts, but more so about Red Alert, WO etc.

        • lprent 7.1.1.1

Yes – they have to be to do the gravatars. But hopefully not after tomorrow. I have all of the code in place now to do a one way hash on the emails and IPs while still leaving gravatars and moderation intact.

If you are registered then I have to leave the email intact. But it will be visible to superadmin only.

          • felixviper 7.1.1.1.1

            Are you the only superadmin?

Also, I can’t get rid of the wysiwyg since the update.

            • felixviper 7.1.1.1.1.1

edit: just noticed your reply to me the other day, have now deleted all TS cookies and cache but the issue remains. Also just noticed that when I load a page, the default comment box is the plain one, but when I click “reply” under a comment the wysiwyg appears at both the reply AND default locations.

              • rosy viper

Also – using Chrome. I get a blank space when I hit reply and have to click again to get the comment box.

              • lprent

Very odd. I got through a lot of work code today despit Lyn returning from the Himalayas, so tomorrow should be clear for TS (apart from a WoF.

            • lprent 7.1.1.1.1.2

Not quite. There are a couple of other techheads, none of whom are involved on site. They’re there in case I drop dead or get disabled in which case they get the packet of info on the site to cover a transition. Generally people who are capable of doing the tech aspects are also uninterested in politics. So there’d be some role shuffling.

    • RedBaronCV 7.2

Okay help me out please. Mike is doing memebership apps?? Otherwise, how does a day job like that coexist with sitting behind drawn curtains with a computer acting as a “no account blogger”. Mike has a clone?
Some how I feel suspicious of these feel good Shearer and other stories. Somebody trying to manipulate something?

      • lprent 7.2.1

Advice is what Advisers give right… If you read the comment you’re responding to then it becomes obvious. 🙂

But Mike is also the ex-general sec of the NZLP as well as being a blogger. However when I get hold of him he usually seems to be loafing out on the golfcourse rather than behind closed curtains in his parents bedroom (where do these spinners get these strange images from?).

        • RedBaronCV 7.2.1.1

Hi Lprent. Yep I realise what advisers do and I knew about Mike’s role in the LP.
Mainly I was entertaining myself with the idea that some bloggers are more equal than other bloggers. After all I felt vaguely insulted by recent descriptions of Standard Bloggers as not living in the real world and here is one who both blogs and has a real life. Does this mean the Labour Party will revise it’s views on bloggers?.
FWIW I spend about 60 hours a week out of the house but not on the golf course so I don’t fit the stereotype either.
On another subject entirely thanks for running this site, I did drop a hint about a party a while ago, but changed my mind , perhaps a masked ball for us bloggers?

  8. Jenny 8

    To little, to late.

“Haters and wreckers”. Isn’t that how your party referred to the Maori Party leadership, Mike? Talk is cheap now. But when it counted, when Tariana Turia stood in the way when the Labour Government wanted to parcel off the seabed and foreshore for salmon farming, ironsands extraction and offshore prospecting, but didn’t want to face any pesky legal challenges from Maori, then no term of abuse was to strong.

Things could have been so much different if the Labour Government had not been so sectarian and so swayed by the demands of big business.

For one, we wouldn’t have a National Government now.

  9. David Viperious H 9

” I would like to advise that I will be working for Labour again, as a contracted part-time Advisor in the office of the Labour Leader.”

Them Mike you are going to have your work cut out for you.

1: There’s this little clique that you will have to get rid off.
2: You will have to fix the hearing problem of the Caucus
3: You will have to Get Shearer to Listen to his constituents (yes even us)
    4: Good luck!

Also why would they want an adviser?? to advise them of Whats right, or to advise them of what they want to hear?? Big difference there.

  10. The word going round Wellington this week is that Mike’s been hired by Shearer’s Office to ‘sort out the Party’. Many of us frown on that kind of role, presumably paid from the Leader’s budget, going to a former Party office holder.

Watch out members, Mike’s on your case. Or would he prefer to give us a fulsome declaration of exactly what his new part time role involves? Go on Mike, tell us! And if it involves reigning in the bloggers, then its a clear conflict of interest.

    • Anne 10.1

The word going round Wellington this week is that Mike’s been hired by Shearer’s Office to ‘sort out the Party’.

LOL. If a few of his comments here plus an impassioned plea at the conference in favour of the caucus initiated remit – a 2/3rds majority of caucus is required before a leadership challenge can be triggered – is anything to go by, then I can say with some certainty… he isn’t going to succeed.

  11. illuminatedtiger 11

    Speak for yourself.

  12. Tracey 12

    Mike

” for what she has done as the Minister for Disability Issues ”

Could you list a few for us here?
