The Whale/Farrar squealing on Labour’s proposal for better gender balance (just like the UK Conservative Party) reminds me of this old gem (from the NZ of 1902). The dynamic duo of right-wing blogging are the modern day incarnation of the likes of Henry Wright.

Yup. That’s exactly what Farrar is saying.

    • Sanctuary 1.1

Glad you agree. Doesn’t consensus just give a warm glow inside?

    • felix 1.2

      Yep, it pretty much is.

He believes the current 16 out of 59 were selected on merit alone, therefore he believes that women are significantly less meritorious than men.

      • The Gormless Fool formerly known as Oleolebiscuitbarrell 1.2.1

..and that they should go home and empty the slops.

        • weka 1.2.1.1

No, the modern day version is they should work in less secure jobs, for less money, until the ones that want to have babies do and then they should put their kids in daycare and get back to work as quickly as possible.

This serves a few functions. One is that it’s easier to convince women to work for less pay, so it’s useful to have them in the workforce but without power. They’re also more likely to put up with part-time work and casual work conditions. Another is that only the women who play the game right are allowed above the glass ceiling. You can’t have too many women in parliament, because then the rich old white men club won’t work properly

        • felix 1.2.1.2

Oh god you’re right gormless. And guess what else? That isn’t even Farrar’s real address!

  2. Jimmie 2

Death by 1000 cuts. I’m guessing that gender quoters for Labour will be around cut number 725?

    • quartz 2.1

Why are you scared of women, jimmie?

      • One Anonymous Knucklehead 2.1.1

Pretty much anything from “outside” – bright minds and dark attitudes etc.

      • Jimmie 2.1.2

Scared of women? Dunno how you get that from my comment.

I think this policy is wonderful.

In additional to the already existing factional fighting in Labour (ABC’s vs Cunliffe supporters, vs Robertson’s rainbow club) you now have a cross faction division of men vs women, party hierarchy vs caucus hierarchy.

And this is policy is going to help Labour win more seats how?

I tell you it is a continuance of Labour’s demise – ignore the leadership vacuum, ignore the policy vacuum, pretend the bad poll results aren’t real, ignore the growing gap between labour activists and caucus, and focus all attention and energy on what amounts to fighting over the titanic deck chairs.

  3. Rogue Trooper 3

When will we learn of Shearer’s position on these quota’s. We have already heard the sage considered counsel of one Damien O’Connor (from Blackball?)

    • The Gormless Fool formerly known as Oleolebiscuitbarrell 3.1

And Phil Goff. And Mike Williams. And Josie Pagani. And Andrew Little.

    • karol 3.2

      Done.

Dancing to the whalespew led media tune.

      • quartz 3.2.1

Now the story is about disunity. Shearer will think he’s got a chance to play to “middle New Zealand” but he just looks weak.

They would have been better to have used it as an opportunity to bash National for being rich white and male.

      • Rogue Trooper 3.2.2

        Sue Moroney introduces some balance.

  4. Colonial Viper 4

Disasterous proposal. Numerous Labour supporting women I have talked to in the last 18 hours think its ridiculous. And they brought it up with me, I didn’t even mention it.

Out of touch on Planet Labour.

    • karol 4.1

The good side, that Labour now should be capitalising on, is that it’s got people talking about the issue. They are talking about alternative ways of improving the balance. And now they should be throwing the spotlight back on National, its male dominance and it’s raft of anti-women legislation – albeit many of them the work of one or two of National’s women Ministers.

      • The Gormless Fool formerly known as Oleolebiscuitbarrell 4.1.1

No-one’s talking about the issue, Karol. They are sniggering at how inept Labour are.

    • quartz 4.2

It’s come out of Labour’s membership via democratic process. I don’t think it’s an easy political sell, but it’s not “disastrous”. Or at least it wouldn’t be if the leadership had been smart enough and agile enough to use it as an opportunity to talk about the fact National doesn’t represent Kiwis (or at least not stupid enough to themselves get wedged from their own party by a media looking to change the leader).

If you don’t like what the party wants, CV, then you should either organise from within to change it or find another party. It’s called democracy.

      • Wayne (a different one) 4.2.1

You’re dreaming if you believe Labour represents mainstream NZ.

It’s the party of ,”lefty, fringe, flunkies”.

The polls confirm Labour or their leadership is not resonating with the average Kiwi.

John Key 64% and National 47% support – Labour barely above 30% and Shearer , single digits I seem to recall.

The trouble for the Labour party is simple – it is dysfunctional and its thinking outdated.

        • One Anonymous Knucklehead 4.2.1.1

The polls confirm nothing of the sort. They confirm that there is more than one left of centre party in New Zealand, and collectively they have similar levels of support to the low-intelligence side of the political spectrum.

MMP has been in place for almost twenty years and you still don’t understand it, do you?

          • The Gormless Fool formerly known as Oleolebiscuitbarrell 4.2.1.1.1

“the low-intelligence side of the political spectrum.”

Hey, One Anonymous Knucklehead, how is that Labour have failed to connect to those voters? They need a better slogan. Something like: vote for us, you idiots.

            • One Anonymous Knucklehead 4.2.1.1.1.1

Hey, Gormless, have you mistaken one anonymous commenter (a Green voter) on a blog for the Labour Party?

Thank you for illustrating my point so well.

              • The Gormless Fool formerly known as Oleolebiscuitbarrell

You spend most of your time here sneeringly telling people they are stupid. Maybe you should reconsider your allegiance and join the Labour Party.

      • Colonial Viper 4.2.2

If you don’t like what the party wants, CV, then you should either organise from within to change it or find another party. It’s called democracy.

it’s called a waste of time. You can’t help a party which has lost its political instincts.

Further, how come “what the party wants” is now so important?

      • cricklewood 4.2.3

Whats “disastrous” is allowing right wing bloggers to jump on it come up with “Man Ban” and due to the vacuum that is prior planning within the Labour party spin machine they have managed to seize the initiative and dominate the front pages and all the disscussion… Really smart stuff…

  5. What a load of desperate wankers you Right-Wing lot are.
They know bye their own polling that the next government will be a Left -Wing coalition .So they will do everything and anything to win an election. As regards this interesting remit the fact is it is a remit up for discussion nothing more and nothing less .Why have not these Right-Wingers showed
more concern at the spying on the public, scandal ,which is much more worrying than this proposal from Labour’s rank and file. Almost every year the Labour Party conference has a controversial remit or two .Remember the Homosexual law reform ,the Nuclear issue , South African tour and even smoking in bars.I remember red-necks and their National friends telling us that this was the end of Labour. I just wish they would pay more attention to their awful nasty policies instead of finding fault with Labour remits of which they have no input whatsoever,

    • Te Reo Putake 5.1

Comment of the Day, Postie! Well said and thank you for reminding us of our proud history of making positive change. In Labour, we’re here to lead, not follow, and we’re here to make a difference. You know, I’ve been out of sync with where redneck NZ is at for all my life and I’m damn proud of the fact. Let the cowards flinch and the traitors sneer, we keep the red flag flying here!

    • chrissy 5.2

      Well said pp.

  6. Populuxe1 6

Women of the calibre of the suffragettes would have more than enough gumption to make it into parliament without a leg up. They campaigned for equality and the right to vote, not special treatment. The analogy is a silly one and this kind of hyperbole does nothing for the dignity of the left.

    • QoT 6.1

Yes, but the point is not that exceptional women have always made it despite obstacles in their way. The point is far more Aaron Gilmores than Melissa Lees do so.

Labour Candidate to become 50% woman to increase chances

    http://timaruvian.co.nz/labour-candidate-to-become-50-woman/

After news broke that the Labour Party is going to select 50% woman and 50% men in the 2014 election list, Timaru Labour candidate Julian Blanchard announced that he is going to become 50% woman to increase his chances.

    • Alanz 7.1

Of course, Julian has an X-chromosome which, from one perspective, technically makes him 50% like a woman. He can channel the inherited characteristics from his mother.

  8. Wayne (a different one) 8

Even the leftist MSM is turning on you, calling this proposal absolutely nuts.

For whatever reason, Labour just can’t focus on the real issues that middle New Zealand care about.

They are not interested in gay rights, smoking laws, nuclear ship visits etc. – they want to know about the economy, jobs, education and health to name but a few – their futures and those of their children.

    Not this flunky internal crap!

Stress in UK Labour around union electorate “stitch up”

Looks like tension between union and non-union parts of the party.

Ed Miliband is facing the biggest crisis of his three-year Labour leadership after the party’s largest union backer, Len McCluskey, accused the party’s leadership of a “stitch-up” and a “scandalous” attempt to smear his Unite union over the bitterly contested selection for the Falkirk parliamentary seat.

The growing row also claimed its first high-profile victim when Labour’s election co-ordinator, Tom Watson, resigned from his post and the shadow cabine…Hours after his resignation, Watson’s office manager, Karie Murphy, was suspended from all offices in the party, along with the Falkirk party chairman, Stephen Deans. Murphy, a close ally of McCluskey, had been trying to win the Labour nomination in Falkirk.

The bitter dispute stems from the selection race to replace the MP Eric Joyce, who resigned from the party after admitting assault in a Commons bar brawl. It is alleged Unite tried to “stitch up” the selection process by cramming the constituency with new members.
