One of these things is not like the other,
One of these things is not quite the same.
Can you guess which one is not like the other,
Can you tell me before I finish the game?

  1. Carol 1

Karl Burnett – only actor of the 4 who has spoken against the NZ Actors’ Union in the Hobbit dispute. The other 3 support the union.

  2. luva 2

Are we going to victimise those who dare to speak out against a Union?

    • Tigger 2.1

Well he’s demonizing the union on behalf of the producers…live by the sword and all that.

    • Fabregas4 2.2

Actually I don’t think this is fair either. Surely he must be allowed his point of view and not be vilified for it here.

      • IrishBill 2.2.1

        I agree with Fabregas4.

        • Joe Bloggs 2.2.1.1

get real – this is The Standard – the uber-home of vilification on the internet

          • Logie97 2.2.1.1.1

@Joe Bloggs – the irony in your comment.
Why do you bother coming here? Stick with the penguin and whale…

      • jcuknz 2.2.2

I agree though I don’t know enough to take either side and the audio of the AE tape wasn’t that wonderful … plus they delivered their lines like in a fast acting drama rather than an info doc … but perhaps I am too old. I’m watching on a laptop.

      • Rex Widerstrom 2.2.3

        Likewise.

First we had the environmentalists suggesting people should be “questioned” and their “names published” so they could be “held to account” in a nasty piece of McCarthyism, and now this bit of Stalinist vilification pops up.

Oh, so he’s “resting” (a situation so common for actors as to have it’s own code) and that makes him “not a real actor”… just as people were classed a “non person” under Uncle Joe, and thus their opinions held to have no validity.

        Charming.

        • DeeDub 2.2.3.1

Way to Godwin the thread, bro!

I don’t think anyone is vilifying Mr. Burnett, but M is totally on the money.

The opinion of someone who actually makes the majority of their income from acting should probably carry a little more weight in this discussion IMO.

          долгосрочной службы товарищ Сталин
          LOL

          • Disengaged 2.2.3.1.1

Well seeing as Jennifer Ward-Lealand hasn’t been in a movie since 2002 or been a regular in a TV series since 1997 we should probably rule out anything she says too then…

            • mcflock 2.2.3.1.1.1

She kicks Burnett’s arse in imdb.com. You might want to check it out, otherwise it might look like your words were ill-chosen.

Oh, and “acting” is not restricted to movies, including indi ones that go straight to dvd/video.

              • Disengaged

I based that on her “official” website http://www.jenniferwardlealand.com/.
I don’t really count being a panelist or singing as acting. But, then to be honest I wouldn’t really count Shortland Street as acting either, which would rather decimate Burnett’s credits…

                • Burnett most recently appeared on one of those Lose-Weight-Change-Your-Lifestyle-type ‘reality’ shows (from hence the picture).
He also made a brief cameo appearance in 7 Days as a spoof celebrity.
I understand he has also recently produced, directed and starred in a self-made movie Captain Amazingly Incredible and the Space Vampires from the Evil Planet!!!
Other than that, as child actor Nick on Shortland St.
As noted above, his current occupation is listed as working in the Australian food industry.

  3. The Voice of Reason 3

One of them is auditioning for the role of Peter Jackson’s stunt double?

  4. DeeDub 4

“Currently Burnett is working in the food industry in Melbourne, Australia.” Wikipedia

    The other three are actors.

  5. ianmac 5

If discussion is to illuminate the points of view I would welcome a dissenting position and the person who said so. Still not sure what the Actors want, but no-one is indispensible.
    No country is unique.

  6. felix 6

I don’t know who any of these people are.

  7. salsy 7

I know, one of them doesnt know the difference between NZ and Australia 🙂

SEAN Okay, are you prepared then to say to your international colleagues, including Simon Whip, the Australian unionist, who I understand has been heavily involved in this, are you prepared to say to them, would you mind rewording or clarifying the fact that there isn’t a boycott in order to get around the negotiating table with Peter Jackson? Are you prepared to back off and take the heat out of this so that it can be worked through?

JENNIFER We have never said there’s a boycott, it is not in any of our information, and also I need to talk about the Australian thing. We are New Zealand Actors’ Equity, we are a fully autonomous branch of the MEAA which is an Australasian based union. We have an elected board, we have an elected committee, here is is for New Zealanders run by New Zealanders, and this whole anti Australian thing…

SEAN Then why has Simon Whip been here all week?

JENNIFER Because he’s our national director, he travels all over Australasia.

  8. hellonearthis 8

And I thought it was something about being blond as three are blondes and one isn’t.

  9. M 9

How is it vilifying him by posting his most recent acting job next to the other three? You can come to your own conclusions.

I saw a clip with him on the news last night and found it hilarious that he was the ‘actors’ face of the pro-Jackson support. If he wants to put his name out there on this issue he has to be prepared for people to point out he is hardly in the category of NZ’s top acting talent.

  10. First of all, I am NOT working in the food industry in Melbourne, I never did. Before that, Wikipedia said I was managing a shoe store in Takapuna. Shouldn’t believe everything you read.

Secondly… this is bloody hilarious! Hahaha, I had to laugh (and post in on my Facebook).

  11. Mickey B 11

Nick(Karl) is the only one who remembers where he’s from. the rest want more precious green paper

  12. Stephen Roughton 12

I can confirm that Karl is telling the truth, he does not work in the food industry…by the look of that pic he does help keep it alive though 😛 Oh and he’s actually a male prostitute now…aye Karl? 😛
