For a succinct analysis of the charter schools policy see this short video from Assoc. Professor Peter O’Connor.

    • marsman 1.1

A very good and clear analysis Jono. Have put the clip on Facebook to spread the message of how we are being hoodwinked re Charter Schools.

    • ianmac 1.2

Excellent thanks Jono. Wonder why there is not an explicit explanation from Banks (!!!) or Isaacs or Key, about just how they would run Charter Schools and why.

    • BM 1.3

This guy Peter O’Connor seems to be under some illusion that every one in NZ wants to retain the status quo where the Unions run the schools and control how NZ kids are educated.

  2. Dr Terry 2

Jono – excellent and enlightened message here – all should watch. Government wants to smash the Teachers Union, the Union they most fear. The thing is to “improve the present public system”, not provide opportunities for cranks, zealots, and unqualified people to foul up the minds of our children.
Poverty is already well on the way to doing that.

Saw Hekia Parata on a TV News clip last night. She was behaving like an arsehole talking down to a group of teachers. After her ‘address’ she complained that ‘there was some discourtesy’ by the teachers.

    • ianmac 4.1

Parata is a strange beast. She plows on in Question Time clearly unwilling or unable to answer credibly, and ditto to Education Groups. She insults teachers with gay abandon and it makes you wonder what the ulterior motives are in doing so. She looks so pleased with herself almost smug. What is really going on here?

      • muzza 4.1.1

Whats going on ianmac, is that is that Parata, like the rest of those who claim to represent us, are representing a very different set of interests…

She know who they are, because she is one of them, we do not!

    All readers of this thread:

Do NOT forget the National Day of Action, that is taking place in various centres around the country tomorrow, Friday, 05 October (around midday and after), and during which beneficiaries, their friend and families, various activist groups, hopefully some opposition party members, unionists and advocates will join, to take a resolute and vocal stand against the National led government’s ultimate attack on the dignity, rights, health and safety of the most vulnerable and truly increasingly very marginalised in NZ’s society.

Activities are planned and everybody with serious concerns, who wishes to support and to be counted, is asked to join the various pickets, marches and protests.

For details look at the following links, but I believe there are more to be found on the web:

Everybody will be welcome, as the ominous ‘Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Bill’, introduced by Minister for Social Development Paula Bennett, and read the first time in Parliament on 20 Sept. this year, will bring about such severe changes, that will impact severly on the lives of sick, disabled and particularly mentally ill on sickness and invalid’s benefits, as of course also to sole parents and the children in their care.

The bill can be found under this link:
    http://www.legislation.govt.nz/bill/government/2012/0067/latest/DLM4542304.html?search=ad_act%40bill__Social+Security+%28Benefit+Categories+and+Work+Focus%29+Amendment+Bill____25_ac%40bc%40rn%40dn%40apub%40aloc%40apri%40apro%40aimp%40bgov%40bloc%40bpri%40bmem%40rpub%40rimp_ac%40bc%40acur%40anif%40bcur%40rinf%40rnif_h_aw&p=1

Submissions can be made to the Social Security Select Committee by 01 Nov. 2012.

These are the largest proposed changes to the welfare system in NZ in decades and will in all certainty lead to substantial harm, further marginalisation and impoverishment of the least fortunate, while the economy is not creating any jobs as it is.

It is time to take a firm and solid stand, to stop this bill becoming law.

    See you there!

  6. xtasy 6

Re the ‘Day of Action’ against the WELFARE ATTACKS by National, ACT, United Future – headed by Minister Paula Bennett – see a few more links with info for events in Hamilton, Christchurch and Dunedin:

I hope that students may also join in, given the fact there is a holiday break and time available.

Stop Bennett and dogdy John to hammer the poor, weak, sick and disabled, while their government cannot even offer fair chances and employment to those who are fit and willing to work!

It is time to take a firm and solid stand.

In Henderson, Auckland, participants will gather at Catherine Place, outside the Westfield Mall, I understand at 12 noon.

A march to the local WINZ office, protest there, and also a march to Paula Bennett’s electorate office are planned. Let’s hope for good weather, but rain or shine, be there, if you can.

    • karol 6.1

      Thanks, xtasy.

And it is a national day of action, so I hope the weather is kind everywhere…. or else there’s always extra clothing, umbrellas etc.

      • Jim Nald 6.1.1

Whatever the weather chooses to do,
it will be kinder than the current portfolio minister.

Thanks for this. Will schedule my break to be there.

In a surprise move the Govt has introduced a tax that targets employer provided office space to workers

Yesterday Revenue Minister Peter Dunne announced the government would target employer-provided office space as it moves to tighten the tax rules on perks used as trade-offs for salary.

It follows an April 2012 issues paper “Recognising salary trade-offs as income” proposing a much tougher set of rules.

The specific changes would tax more office space provided to employees through the FBT (Fringe Benefit Tax) rules, mainly in the Auckland and Wellington central business districts where the benefits to the employee are greatest.

Mr Dunne scoffed at the labour party suggestion that he was looking to impose a FTB on staplers and pens and elevators. He said that that had been suggested but he had rejected it

    • karol 7.1

I though it was a FB tax on employer provided parking spaces.

      • Dv 7.1.1

Yes it is but I took liberties.

  9. This article is an interesting post about how making important social issues seem trivial and therefore not worthy of our attention (Remarks from John Key such as: “people on the street are so over the Dotcom issue come to mind”.) in order to cement social control.

    • muzza 11.1

Ev, yeah its all part of the programming…

The sad part is that with people now not able to understand or digest even basic information if its not the size of a tweet, it seems to be working rather well.

    Exodus 2: 23-
During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

Iran’s president has repeatedly denied any Iranian connection to the September 11 attacks or to al Qaeda.

A New York federal judge who found Iran, the Taleban and al Qaeda culpable in the 2001 terrorist attacks has approved a US$6 billion (NZ$7.3b) default judgment against them

Oh look, another article emphasising the propaganda against Iran, facy that!

Still no moves against Saudi Arabia though, where most of the “offenders” came from.

BUT …….Obama ‘wanted bin Laden alive’

A new book says President Barack Obama hoped to put Osama bin Laden on trial, showing the US commitment to due process under law, if the al Qaeda leader had surrendered during a US raid in Pakistan last year.

Wasn’t OBL at least half Saudi, surely that would make the judges ruling above somewhat missing vital details?

Oh but OBL was not charged with 911, so having him alive was never an option, he was already dead, which makes this article, and the book nothing more than continuing propaganda BS!

    • Jokerman 13.1

regrettably the Iranian people are increasingly struggling, day to day, economically.
Sanctions are Sledgehammers / fissile weapons themselves

      Those who reject Allah
      And hinder (men) from
      The Path of Allah-
      Their deeds will Allah
      Render astray
      (from their mark)

      Surah 47:1

      Then seest thou such
      A one as takes
      As his god his own
      Vain desire? Allah has
      Knowing (him as such),
      Left him astray, and sealed
      His hearing and his heart
      (And understanding), and put
      A cover on his sight.
Who , then, will guide him
      After Allah (has withdrawn
      Guidance)? Will ye not
      Then receive admonition?

Turkey appeals to UN over mortar attack

Turkey has asked the UN Security Council to take the “necessary action” to stop Syrian aggression and ensure that the government there respect Turkish territorial sovereignty after a mortar bomb fired from Syria killed five Turkish civilians.

“This is an act of aggression by Syria against Turkey,” Turkish UN Ambassador Ertugrul Apakan said in a letter to the president of the 15-nation Security Council, Guatemalan Ambassador Gert Rosenthal

Its been well documented that Turkey has involved itself in Iraq and Syria previously, and the stuff artice , straight out of Reuters, makes to attempt what ever to explain the situation in anything other than simple terms, supported by such quotes from Hillary Clinton

    http://www.3news.co.nz/Syria-accuses-Turkey-of-allowing-al-Qaida-transit/tabid/417/articleID/269529/Default.aspx

    http://www.turkishweekly.net/news/138977/iraq-condemns-turkish-cross-border-operations-against-pkk.html

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the US was “outraged that the Syrians have been shooting across the border,” adding that she would speak with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on the matter.

“It’s a very, very dangerous situation,” Clinton said. “And all responsible nations need to band together to persuade the Assad regime to have a cease-fire, quit assaulting their own people and begin the process of a political transition.”

NATO’s National Atlantic Council, which is composed of the alliance’s ambassadors, held an emergency meeting in Brussels Wednesday night at Turkey’s request to discuss the cross-border incident.

The meeting ended with a statement strongly condemning the attack and saying: “The alliance continues to stand by Turkey and demands the immediate cessation of such aggressive acts against an ally.” It also urged the Syrian regime to “put an end to flagrant violations of international law”.

How do they know that its Syrian forces firing into Turkey?

NZ media simply passing on the BLATANT propaganda from the corrupted AP/Reuters!

Doing it by age doesn’t any sense – it should be done by size. No point in having a 7 year old in a restraint if they’re big enough to wear a standard seat belt.
