   I too was struck by the prospect of Sue Bradford and Mark Hotchin uniting on behalf on beneficiaries against Ms Bennett and her hordes.

   The point, as Will Hutton, Robert Wade and others have pointed out, is that these people (especially the financial genus) have, over the last thirty years or so, become certain of their right to massive incomes, to the point that they can assume $360k per annum is a minimum required for an acceptable lifestyle.

   Anyway, dear hot sexy Hotchin, no need to ask for $7000 per week, come back to NZ, come take it on the chin and live amongst those here who are on $700 per week. You would still be a lot better off than the $529 median weekly income*.

   This is probably a good example of where travel costs to work eat into someones budget making them just as badly off as a beneficiary:

   At least $5900-00 a week in business class flights from Hawaii to Auckland and back

   $7,000 – travel costs to work $5900-00 = $1,100.
   Probably at least another $100-00 in taxis to and from the airport.

   Hopefully Jeremy can help him with his budget.

       It’s not my fault that you can’t distinguish between income received and income after (some) expenses have come out.

       2 Corinthians 11:19 at least tells me to enjoy your efforts to portray something that simply can’t mathematically happen.

       Not even John Key would argue that a benefit is more than the minimum wage. Tell you what – lodge a query with the PM and ask if it’s possible that someone working full-time can receive less income than someone on a benefit – all family circumstances being equal.

       If you won’t believe anyone else – maybe you’ll believe the PM.

       Give him as many examples as you like – when the maths is done the income received will always be higher for the person working. It’s deliberate government policy to make it that way.

         But I never argued that the core minimum wage is lower than the core benefit, I argued that some beneficiaries receive more when all expenses, supplements, etc are taken into account and it is that final figure that is available for poverty alleviation, it was part of a wider point that child poverty is not just a question of upping benefits, that having a parent in employment improves the child poverty stats…

         Not that Hotchin’s kids will ever have to worry about poverty methinks…

   Little update:

   “He withdrew his application for more than $1000 a week which gained widespread media publicity.    So he has ample money to live off tucked away overseas but wanted more – at least the judge was sensible and clear.
