As well as releasing its yearly report on World Development Indicators last month, the World Bank opened up its data. It has included a public API and access to over a thousand indicators.

That’s great AYB, I’m all for open access to data. Had a look at the site and it makes pretty pictures but I didn’t see how to get raw data, or data in a form I could use (possibly because I lost interest due to a terrible attention span). What I really want to know is why the World Bank have made the data more readily available.
