Shock horror right wing think tank thinks NZ not very democratic

Written By: - Date published: 10:04 am, January 18th, 2018 - 74 comments

National’s cheerleaders are pushing an international report which suggests that New Zealand’s democratic system is only slightly better than average in world terms.  But the organisation behind the report and the methodology used need some checking.

Can This Government Regain Power on Its Policies?

Written By: - Date published: 11:46 am, January 17th, 2018 - 82 comments

The sixth Labour led Government has made a good start to its term. But what policy results will New Zealand have to vote for and campaign on in 2020?

Is it OK for a woman with an opinion to host TVNZ’s Breakfast?

[getty src=”815156758″ width=”594″ height=”396″] It’s great news that Hayley Holt has landed a cool new gig hosting TVNZ’s Breakfast show. It’s not so great that before she even gets on the air we have to endure the pontification of some pundits about whether or not it’s “OK”, given she stood as a Green Party candidate […]

Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori

The language is the life force of the mana Māori.  Which is why the Government and the Opposition should pledge support to ensure it survives and thrives.

Jac-in-da-Box

“Wedger Wayne” Mapp in todays’s Spinoff does his best to stuff Jacinda Ardern into a Tony Blair “Third Way”  box. Too glib by far.  True in 2002 Blair did promise to eliminate child poverty by 2020; but poverty’s now the highest in 20 years in Britain. I’d back Jacinda to do much better. Besides, instead of Mandy she’s got David Parker.

Really buffering climate change

Written By: - Date published: 9:00 pm, January 14th, 2018 - 53 comments

The recent development of accident and disaster insurance over the last century is now having a profound influence on buffering climate change. The Economist had a recent article with an excellent graph. Perhaps this is worth encouraging to give a price signal and a political lobby against that of the polluter lobby.

Racist dog whistling

We may think that we now live in more enlightened times where the scourge of racism is finally being dealt to and is no longer considered acceptable but recent events in Australia and the United States suggests that this is not the case.

Is it time to Nationalise Auckland?

Written By: - Date published: 8:51 am, January 13th, 2018 - 52 comments

It has been a decade now since Minister of Local Government Rodney Hide proposed amalgamating all of Auckland’s city councils into one enormous entity by dumping much of the Royal Commission’s proposals. Well it’s time to hold its results to account.

Climate Change and the New Zealand Defence Forces

Written By: - Date published: 8:00 am, January 12th, 2018 - 74 comments

It’s always bugged me that our military forces are under-used in New Zealand. It’s time we invited them to protect us from climate change.
