Police planning to screw up again

Morgan Godfery at Maui Street blog is reporting the following (I cleaned up the links).

Dayle Takitimu, spokeswoman for Te Whanau a Apanui, informs me that the Police are planning “raids” against protestors.

I tend to think the accusations have a solid base. A number of Maori police officers have come out saying they were approached by senior police officials who asked whether they would take part in planned “Tuhoe style terror raids” against Te Whanau a Apanui.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see this occur under a National government. Using public power to protect private interests is so, so National. The integrity of NZ Inc comes before the democratic rights of citizens.

This is the iwi that helped to organize elements of the flotilla that is currently protesting the Petrobas geological survey.

Quite simply this would be outright stupid on the part of the police. The protests are legitimate, appear to be pretty safe, and are being controlled by police. The government has acknowledged that the consultation done with local iwi was inadequate.

What are the police trying to do? Do a mass raid for minor firearms charges including possession of .22 rounds and blowhards mouthing off? Quite simply the police should know better. After the saga of the botched raids across the whole country in 2007 and the subsequent delaying by the police through various legal means for nearly 4 years to get a better chance of not being laughed out of court, to raid a iwi for protesting is dumb.

How many suppression orders will they require to suppress comment on their decision making this time?
