Trump’s supporters believed the election was rigged, and no amount of evidence to the contrary could change their minds. They didn’t want to look at the evidence, didn’t trust it or didn’t understand it - or some combination of the three.
mid-latitudes
I’m interested in how arctic warming is effecting the climate at mid-lattides. Tap on those pesky tinyurls and you’ll find some of the latest research and observations. Too much effort? Gavin will dumb it down for ya (see the Q&A above).
Incognito, I tried for an evidence based argument (10 links to studies and data), but maybe an appeal to authority is more your thing? Here’s a Q&A with NASA’s senior climate adviser: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/environment/article/...
RL It's too bad we Americans never switched to the metric system - causes lots of confusion. Yesterday, you assumed a chart was in Celsius. It was actually Fahrenheit, but unlabeled: https://tinyurl.com/befkk2uu You wrote, “And the second link you give ...
Weka, Sorry, just trying to shorten the links. This one’s worth the read if you have the time: “Weakened evidence for mid-latitude impacts of Arctic warming” (Nature Climate Change, 11/16/2020) https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-020-00954-y#Fig1 The ...
RL A last thought just for clarity .... your comment above describes how a weak or strong PV effects our weather. That much is well understood and not in dispute. The uncertainty lies WRT climate change. As quoted earlier, “With the benefit of ten more ...
Anne, Be careful to avoid generalizations. It’s true, extreme temperature events are increasing in CONUS. Extremely warm daily minimums (in terms of departure from normal) have increased, as have extremely warm highs. But notice, too, extremely cold ...
Lprent, Like you I’m nauseated by Faux News, so that was quite the insult. They are the antithesis of an unbiased, evidence based mindset - something I value a great deal. Still, loved your link to Severe Weather Europe (had in fact already read it), but ...
Redlogix -17F?? You’re off by either 19F or 15F, depending on where the temperature was observed: Dallas Love Field recorded a low of +2F on February 16 https://tinyurl.com/2plul2te The same day, a record low of -2F at Dallas/Fort Worth International ...
In Vino, Do some fact checking and you’ll find the opposite is true. This time series from NOAA shows that as a monthly average, Texas winter’ temperatures have moderated (warmer minimums): https://tinyurl.com/4jfxxjju The trend is consistent with changes ...
Anne, We would see extreme weather conditions with or without climate change. If you’re gonna claim Texas’ cold snaps are getting more frequent or more severe, you need to back it up with evidence - a time series showing the new trend.
“Of course the elephant in the room that is not being mentioned is climate change.” The cold snap may have been even colder if not for CC. Nothing to talk about otherwise.
Jane Goodall discusses over population: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2t8DLzLqj5Q
“well to state the obvious, the global economy requires perpetual population growth doesn't it? “ Other way around! Population growth requires more jobs (or the unemployment rate would skyrocket). More jobs is dependent on an expanding economy.
“Applying energy-intensive techno-fixes won't do anything to address that fundamental root cause of all our problems.” +10
RedLogix, Thanks for the historical perspective. This is a topic I’ve never spent much time on.
Trickledrown, Chernobyl was safer for humans prior to the accident, but was a dangerous, unwelcoming place for animals like lynx, brown bear and wolves. Now it’s a haven: “Many people think the area around the Chernobyl nuclear plant is a place of post-...
What’s worse for an ecosystem, high levels of radioactive contamination, or human beings? Chernobyl suggests the latter: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XaUNhqnpiOE
I like what I’ve read about Gen 4 reactors, but disappointed by the timeframe. Construction starting in the 2030’s at the soonest? “Depending on their respective degree of technical maturity, the first Generation IV systems are expected to be deployed ...
“I was working off the NZ numbers in the article I attached.” Say what? Nothing there supports your claim.
I should’ve clarified, ‘inefficient compared to adults’: “A new 40,000-person study from Iceland has found that children under 15 are about half as likely as adults to be infected with COVID-19 and, when they do catch the virus, only half as likely as ...
A US based investigation found that people in the age group 18-29 are 16 times more likely to die from Covid than kids aged 5-17. And seniors 85+ are 630 times more likely to die than the 18-29ers: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/...
McFlock, “But then influenza really does almost exclusively kill pensioners, whereas covid is not so age-selective as the plan-b crowd would have us believe.” Nonsense. The CDC (USA) reported 188 confirmed pediatric deaths from influenza during the 2019 - ...
McFlock, “In a year, the USA has had almost 10% of its population get a confirmed case of covid. UK is on about 5%. That's with limited lockdowns and general inactivity as a response. So let's say 8% are vulnerable, and they affected at a similar rate to ...
PhilA, “Just look at the 8% of adults for whom the vacine will be ineffective.” The 8% figure is fairly meaningless when taken by itself. For example, if 100% of the population is vaccinated, the 92% efficacy would drastically reduce the rate of spread, ...
Not only is the virus FAR less dangerous to children than adults, children are also inefficient spreaders. Good news for third world nations where children often make up 1/2 the population.

Sorry, I don’t know anything about New Zealand politics. Amazing animals though.
