Key endorses Banks

Written By: - Date published: 2:20 pm, June 8th, 2009 - 59 comments

As if denying Aucklanders the chance to have their say on the super city wasn’t enough National now seems determined to tell them who their mayor’s going to be too. It’s absolutely unacceptable for the PM to be endorsing John Banks as the mayor of the super city.

The Tank Man

Written By: - Date published: 11:55 am, June 8th, 2009 - 4 comments

It was remiss of me not to post on this last week. June 4 marked the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Pictured above is “Tank Man” – an unidentified protester who briefly halted the progress of the Chinese tanks on June 5 1989. You can watch the Frontline video “The Tank Man” below […]

Breakfast covers the Worth investigation

Written By: - Date published: 12:17 pm, June 4th, 2009 - 18 comments

First it was Paul Henry and Guyon Espiner. Both agree Key needs to “come clean with the country and give us more detail than he has”. Next up was Goff. Fair analysis. Didn’t gloat. One of his best appearances so far.

More on Worth?

Just out from the police: An allegation has been made against a sitting member of Parliament. Wellington police are conducting a preliminary investigation into this matter. UPDATE: Key has just confirmed at his press conference that Worth has quit because of a “criminal matter”.

Transparency

Strange isn’t it that Key can support transparency yesterday but not today. Political expediency at its worst.

Worth’s gone

Link on Stuff. UPDATE: The “personal reasons” we know about so far: He personally profited from his trip to India to discuss aviation training. He personally visited the victim of an attack involving the son of a mate of his. He’s been personally summonsed to give evidence in a defamation suit involving a gossip columnist.

The crisis of credit visuali[s]ed

I just came across this. It’s the first part of a video by a US organisation called A New Way Forward. They’re organising nationwide video screenings of the extended version as well as town hall meetings and demonstrations to demand that their government “break up the insolvent banks and never again let them get so […]

Less firing, more hiring

Written By: - Date published: 11:58 am, May 22nd, 2009 - 8 comments

The Herald reports today that TVNZ fired 90 employees following a letter from Broadcasting Minister Johnathan Coleman demanding that it raise its profitability. This follows similar cuts at the Ministry of Social development, Ministry for the Environment, Tertiary Education Commission. There look likely to be hundreds or thousands of job losses as a result of […]

Over at Public Address Keith Ng has a great post up on Labour and National’s tax regimes. Pretty graphs, accessible analysis and a DPF slap-down – what more could you ask for?

The Nats’ campaign vid that you and I paid for

Written By: - Date published: 2:14 pm, May 13th, 2009 - 54 comments

I figure the very least the Nats could do after spending our money on their asian-voter campaign video is to share it with us. Strangely, I couldn’t find it on the National Party website as referenced by last night’s Campbell Live piece. Fortunately the YouTube user “NationalAsianTeam” still has their copy up – it’s embedded […]

Hopeless

Anyone remember Helen Clark’s announcement during Labour’s election campaign that there would be no new significant spending promises: “We have judged it not prudent at this present time to make those sort of commitments.” We’ve now got Key justifying his inevitable-looking betrayal of his campaign tax cut promises: “There’s no getting away from the fact that […]

Govt’s refusal to listen sparks protests

Written By: - Date published: 12:45 pm, April 23rd, 2009 - 9 comments

The government’s refusal to listen on its fast-tracked Supercity plans is already resulting in protests. The unrest that’s building should hardly come as a surprise. I can certainly understand Aucklanders not wanting to be dictated to by Wellington – especially when the outcome is ACT running their city. I’m still at a loss as to […]

Media finally getting it?

Written By: - Date published: 12:18 pm, April 23rd, 2009 - 18 comments

On the impending job losses at the IRD, TVNZ reporter Catherine Loft ended her report with: “Anyone who once thought that they were safe working for our government really needs to think again”. I wonder how on earth they could have got that idea?

Lost in translation

UMR has just released a poll [PDF link] measuring support for a supercity. Stuff reports on it under the headline “Voters back Auckland supercity”: Though the poll’s sample of just 483 is small, it is the first real indicator of support for the supercity concept, with 45 percent of Aucklanders in favour, and 43 percent […]

Govt still refuses to act on youth smoking

A couple of months ago you may remember Tony Ryall rejecting a health select committee recommendation that cigarettes and tobacco be kept out of sight in shops to help make them less inviting. On Sunrise this morning Oliver Driver wanted to know, in the light of fresh evidence, why Key’s government is still intent on […]

Obscene

Rob Fyfe, CEO of Air New Zealand has seen a pay rise of 93%. The Herald reports that before his pay was frozen in July, Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe nearly doubled his pay – his package rising from $1.61 million to $3.1 million. With the economy in freefall and people’s jobs increasingly at risk […]

Higher education

Turns out Richard Worth’s not the only one with a passion for flying. Tertiary Education Minister Anne Tolley has been joyriding in helicopters at the taxpayers’ expense.

Out of touch

Written By: - Date published: 8:57 am, April 7th, 2009 - 32 comments

Vernon Small suggests that a further 60,000 workers may lose their jobs by next year. So it comes as a shock to read that John Key’s response to this latest news is to stick firmly to his: “optimistic and sunny” approach. It’s almost like he’s living in some alternative reality. While Bill is quietly crapping […]

Still stuck in the slow lane

Written By: - Date published: 5:42 pm, April 6th, 2009 - 44 comments

In the Dom Post today Tom Pullar-Strecker calls Steven Joyce’s recently announced broadband fibre plans: old wine in new bottles – a backdown on the ambitions sketched out by National before the election, which were arguably always too grandiose. Managing the expectations they raised during the campaign was always going to be a problem for […]

It’s just not worth the risk

Written By: - Date published: 8:06 pm, April 5th, 2009 - 23 comments

From Bill Ralston’s latest column on the Richard Worth scandal: Key’s predecessor had no qualms about making ministers walk the plank if they failed to tell her everything. Unless he wants to appear weak and risk further embarrassment to his Government, Key will have to throw the hapless Worth overboard. Ralston’s right. Key should protect […]

English kicks cycleway to touch

While John Key’s been bouncing from cloud to cloud, Bill English has been grinding away in the back room. He’s finally done the the numbers on Key’s cycleway, announcing today that: We won’t be spending $50 million on it this year or next year or the year after. With one swift stroke, he’s effectively killed […]

The CIS released a report [PDF link] today entitled Ending No. 8 Wire Welfare: Why New Zealand is Lagging Behind. Its author is Luke Malpass. Predictably, from the right-wing think tank, the paper is an ideologically driven argument for a more punitive welfare system. As is so often the case, it’s premised on the tired […]

Sean Plunket, “interviewer”

Written By: - Date published: 11:44 am, March 31st, 2009 - 19 comments

I’ve just listened to Sean Plunket interview Goff this morning. It was actually less of an interview and more an exercise in running cover for Richard Worth. And of course it’s not the first time Plunket has gone feral when National has been in trouble. A couple of weeks ago, he was demanding Labour produce […]
