Bill English doesn’t get it – literally doesn’t get it – how messed up the “Brighter Future” is

This is an astonishing admission from Bill English:

Prime Minister Bill English ‘puzzled’ by high numbers out of work and education

Both the Government and social agencies say they’re struggling to reach at-risk youth.

There are approximately 92,700 Kiwis aged between 15 and 24 who aren’t working, in education or training. That’s up 19 percent during National’s time in power, and Prime Minister Bill English admits he’s not sure why.

“That is a bit of a challenge, a bit of a puzzle because we have in place any number of programmes providing pathways for young people from school into work,” he told The AM Show on Monday morning. …

Why would young people dropping out of work or education be up 19% after 9 long years of National government?

Why. Why. Why oh why?

Could it be because they don’t see that they have a future in this country?

Could it be because the PM has told them that they are useless druggies who should be replaced by other workers?

Could it be because of the corrosive effects of increasing inequality? (Read The Spirit Level Bill).

Could it be because most work is too low paid?

Could it be because conditions for workers have been steadily eroded?

Could it be because they know they will never own their own home?

Could it be because they can look around and see poverty, people sleeping in cars, homeless…?

Could it be because education has been damaged by narrow standards and stupid targets?

Could it be because welfare and support systems are increasingly hard to access and punitive?

Could it be because they don’t have faith in a political system that allows dirty politics?

Could it be because support systems such as mental health have been slashed and can’t cope?

Could it be because they understand the irreparable damage that we are doing to our environment?

Could it be because of a stupid “war on drugs” instead of a considered health policy?

Could it be because the “Brighter Future” is a mess, it doesn’t work for them, and they live it every day?

Such a mystery.
