“Caped crusader’s plan flawed”

That’s the headline from today’s editorial in the DomPost.

Th DomPost starts off:

The last time this Government got into real trouble it had controversially made much-married former Winz boss Christine Rankin a families commissioner and selected a tyro to contest, almost unaided, the Mt Albert by-election Justice Minister Simon Power did his best caped-crusader impersonation and tried to deflect public attention by announcing he wanted fewer jury trials.

This week he did it again. As Acting Prime Minister Bill English buckled to pressure to forgo all claims to a ministerial housing allowance, Mr Power announced stage II of his proposed revamp of the way elections are funded.

The DomPost’s verdict:

Mr Power says he is confident that the Government’s proposals “set the foundation for a fair, enduring and workable legislative framework for electoral finance”. They do not.

The legislation that results from this process has to acknowledge voters’ desire to know who funds what, so they can draw their own inferences. Democracy rests on the consent of the governed and they are entitled to know precisely where the money comes from.

Precisely. Batman should think again.
