Sons of Anarchy is just a TV show right? There isn't a copycat gang (or proudboy-like group using the insignia) in NZ is there? It seems a fairly distinctive shirt – though could just be merch:

    https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/crime/supermarket-stabbing-attack-random-incident-police

And what are the odds that Arthur Taylor would just happen to be there to take pics and be interviewed by RNZ? Dunedin really is a small town.

    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/442246/people-stabbed-at-supermarket-in-dunedin

    • I Feel Love 1.1

"sons of anarchy" hoodies, shirts whatever can be bought from the warehouse ffs, ha!!!! So much paranoia, fellow Dunedinite here & I was picking up my kid from LPS, I got so many messages from ppl asking if I was safe, this really is a small town.

      • Forget now 1.1.1

With the New Zealand lower part of the logo too? Though it's not my kind of clothing – I tend to go with op-shop random assortments, so I'll take your word for it IFL (Disco Donna?). Good to know that doesn't mean anything except he liked the show (or image).

I got a few texts and emails myself – even one from whanau in Australia!

and that is a nice bit of revolution.

    https://www.rawstory.com/german-churches-bless-same-couples-in-defiance-of-vatican/

"The heavens were open," Munich priest Wolfgang Rothe said, visibly moved after blessings before an altar decorated with a rainbow flag in the Catholic Church of St Benedict.

The church in the southern German city is holding one of four planned blessing Masses in the majority-Catholic state of Bavaria. The other three are set to take place in the city of Wuerzburg.

On Monday – a week before the International Day against Homophobia – church services all over Germany from Aachen to Zornheim, as well as in major cities like Frankfurt, Cologne and Berlin, are to stage blessings of same-sex couples under the motto #liebegewinnt (love wins).

"My concern is to get this out of the church backyards – to where it belongs: in the middle of church life," Rothe said.

Great news. Won't get me back inside HMC though. Sabine, any thoughts on why it should be that Germany breaks with Rome? Another paper nailed on a Church door? A 'turbulent priest'?

    • Sabine 4.1

Pragmatism, if the church in Germany does not want to loose anymore faithful and with them taxes they need to modernise and be accepting of others in faith.

The German church – catholic and lutheran – receive money from the government via taxes collected on workers. The only way to not pay church tax is to leave the church formally and once that is done you can not marry in the church nor will the church bury you. Stuff like that. But many people do that, as it can be quite a bit of money that is taxed away to the churches. No taxation without representation would be the easiest way to putting it. And then of course also the believe that if mankind is made in the image of god, that must also then apply to the rainbow community.

      https://www.vaticannews.va/en/church/news/2019-07/germany-catholic-protestant-churches-decline-membership.html

According to a report by the Germany’s Catholic and Protestant Churches, the loss to both communities amounted more than 430,000 faithful in 2018.

In Germany, churches can collect taxes from their members. This is called the church tax (Kirchensteuer). The church tax is 8% of your income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and 9% in the rest of Germany1. If you earn 50 000€ a year in Berlin, you would pay around 800€ in church tax1

      https://allaboutberlin.com/glossary/Kirchensteuer#:~:text=In%20Germany%2C%20churches%20can%20collect,%E2%82%AC%20in%20church%20tax1.

      • mac1 4.1.1

And there I was thinking it might have been some altruistic reason of recognising truth and accepting creation's many differences. Dang. And bang goes HMC. Anyway I found another church that has been accepting of gay marriage for the 34 years I have been a member. But I was hopeful that the Church might have seen the Light. Thanks, Sabine.

        • Sabine 4.1.1.1

There is 'the church' and then there are the priests and nuns on the ground, and as someone who grew up in a convent with a bunch of hippy nuns i can guarantee that not all bavarian priests and nuns are like their church would like them to be.

But i think that was these priests and clergy are doing is the only way to force the RCChurch into the future, if they want to continue being a church. And i would love for my sister to get her blessing for her marriage in church. Just because.

    • Sabine 4.2

You might like the full story about the 'turbulent' priest. Augsburg is a lovely town, and i grew up not far from where the priest nailed his pages to the Dom. The old part of the town where Emperor Maximillian stayed is still all there and fully inhabited and commercially used.

      https://steadfastlutherans.org/2018/11/martin-luther-at-augsburg-in-1518/

      • mac1 4.2.1

I did not mean Luther as a the 'turbulent priest' but Thomas à Becket who also followed his particular truth. But it was a good story and I had not known much of Luther's particular struggle with the Vatican enforcer. Interestingly, my secondary school motto denied Luther's 'by faith alone' being 'Fide et Opere'- by Faith and Good Works. I always liked HMC's acceptance of the need to perform good work, socially just and proper actions informing my own politics. Some good from all that boyhood schooling and upbringing.

        • Sabine 4.2.1.1

Ah, yes Becket, also a troublesome turbulent priest. 🙂 He never even entered my mind. Dang. But yes, some things just stick. Ora et Labora, that was ours.

          • mac1 4.2.1.1.1

Ora et Labora. Pray and work. My computer is playing music as I write these words. "As I went down to the river to pray" from "Oh Brother, where art thou?"

Felicitous synchronicity. I am also in the midst of transcribing/editing a poem with the neighbouring river as its focus. Happy times!

        • ghostwhowalksnz 4.2.1.2

          Becket a 'priest' ?

He was Henrys Lord Chancellor before his nomination as Archbishop of Canterbury, he was ordained the day before his consecration, so his religious background was not much more than of the few at the time who had an education.

          • mac1 4.2.1.2.1

In the play "Becket", Henry 11 is quoted as saying"Who will rid me of this trurbulent priest?" So three knights did. On the steps of Canterbury cathedral altar. Becket in the film played by Richard Burton memorably says to one of his executioners, "Sheath thy sword, Roderick, before you impale your immortal soul upon it."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_no_one_rid_me_of_this_turbulent_priest%3F I note that my comment above is based purely on my memory, and differs slightly from the facts presented in the wikipedia article.

maybe we need dedicated 'free' spaces for homeless people who live in cars/vans to park legally, with access to toilets/wash blocks and cooking areas.

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/parking-fines-rise-for-homeless-napier-woman-on-emergency-housing-list/HXF4QTXP4IUFUE66IGHV53CFLA/

    • Gabby 6.1

Napier council's ceo presumably has plenty of free parking space out front of his/her place, and surely wouldn't object to homeless ppl parking up out there?
