Anyone what Greta Thurnberg's views are on issues other than climate change? The economy, labour relations, trade unions? Public v private sector? welfare? minimum wages?

    • Ad 1.1

At 17 I could barely think about more than sex.

World leader in any field at 17 is not too shoddy.

And according to Time, she's the most important leader in the world this year.

      • alwyn 1.1.1

"most important leader in the world this year".

That is not Time's definition. They aren't talking about a leader at all. Their definition is the following.

Person of the Year (called Man of the Year or Woman of the Year until 1999) is an annual issue of the United States news magazine Time that features and profiles a person, a group, an idea, or an object that "for better or for worse… has done the most to influence the events of the year"

It is not regarded as an honour for the person concerned, and doesn't even need to be a person. For example we had the following people chosen.

"controversial figures such as Adolf Hitler (1938), Joseph Stalin (1939 and 1942), Nikita Khrushchev (1957) and Ayatollah Khomeini (1979) have also been granted the title for their impacts"

Even the Computer qualified in 1982.

So no, your full statement "And according to Time, she's the most important leader in the world this year" seems to be misinterpreting their reason for the choice.

        • Ad 1.1.1.1

Their definition as stated is perfectly consistent with the word "leadership".

You want honour. Well, you have to pay extra for sides.

So yes, my interpretation is consistent.

But Alwyn, well Alwyn, you can take the 2019 annual award for failed pedant.

        • A 1.1.1.2

          Thanks Alwyn. Makes sense.

    • alwyn 1.2

She apparently wants world leaders who don't do what she says "Put up against the wall". And that apparently means, in Swedish, exactly what you think. She sounds rather like Che Guevara on that subject. Is that any use.

[that requires some back up alwyn. Specifically that her words the other day mean that people should be shot and that this is what she intended to convery. Note that my patience as a moderator is worn very thin, so you can either provide evidence via a link, quote and explanation (no I won’t be reading a whole article to parse what you mean) to support your assertion or you can withdraw it, or I’ll moderate accordingly – weka]

      • weka 1.2.1

        mod note for you alwyn.

      • alwyn 1.2.2

I asked a Swedish friend what the statement would mean in their language and I was told it would mean that they should be shot. I don't speak the language so I can only accept her word for it. As she is a native speaker of the language I took her word for the interpretation. Of course you may be more of an authority on the language. Are you?

If it makes you happier I will do the Parliamentary "I withdraw and apologise" with all the sincerity that our MPs, such as Winston Peters, display when they say it.

[given your long history on TS of telling lies about public figures, I’m not inclined to take your story at face value. Further, it’s very easy to find discussion about what was said and what it means online, so in the absence of that and in the interests of not wasting any more time, 4 week ban (double the October one). And no, you can’t both claim you were right and withdraw the claim in the same comment and expect to be taken seriously. – weka]

        • I feel love 1.2.2.1

Yeah already been outraged and twittered by right wing bozos, she cleared it up as a mistake in English (as it's not her first language). Really, does she seem like someone who wants to kill people? She seems to upset the Jeremy Clarksons and others of that ilk without resorting to death threats.

        • Psycho Milt 1.2.2.2

As she is a native speaker of the language I took her word for the interpretation.

Greta Thunberg is also a native speaker of the Swedish language, and says it's a meaning lost in translation, and yet you feel fully confident as a non-Swedish speaker to blather on this thread about her wanting to have people shot. Do you bring this ignorance-based approach to all your comments, or just this particular one?

        • mickysavage 1.2.2.3

Lets all get outraged because a 16 year old misspoke and not talk about how the grown ups are wrecking the planet …

          • McFlock 1.2.2.3.1

Look on the bright side: comments at TS will have a massive increase in their truthfulness, accuracy, and good faith over the next 4 weeks…

    • pat 1.3

without a habitable environment none of that exists….so perhaps she hasnt worried about any of that….I know I find myself asking that question.

  2. Adrian 2

Bullshit. We have young people here who are actually doing something positive about changing our wasteful and polluting ways and not taking selfies and sitting on a carriage floor complaining about crowded German trains while holding a first-class ticket.

    • Was that a pro po of nothing, or did you have some citations?

Also: could you outline how the taking of selfies is incompatible with being an activist?

        • weka 2.1.1.1

Imagine being a teenager and having to defend tweeting about travelling on a crowded train.

          • joe90 2.1.1.1.1

And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
            Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're goin' through

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl3vxEudif8

          • In Vino 2.1.1.1.2

I suspect most Kiwis do not understand the train system in Germany and most of Europe. The fact that Greta held a first class ticket means she can get onto any train going to her destination, and enter a first class carriage – but if the carriage is full, she will have to wait for a seated person to get off before she can take that seat.

If you want to reserve a seat, you must reserve it on a specific train in advance. Her journey was disrupted by unpredictability of previous trains she was on, so she could not do that.

I experienced the same problem with a second-class ticket in Germany – had to sit on floor with my luggage for 20 mins before somebody got off the train and I could have the vacated seat.

Greta accepted this as normal, and was not complaining when she posted the photo.

It seemed to me that Stuff deliberately sensationalised the story, giving us the impression that there was a 'spat'. A journalistic lie.

            • weka 2.1.1.1.2.1

Thanks In Vino. I hadn't seen the Stuff article. People are so intent on making her a target and interpreting things in the worst way. Sad really.

    • greywarshark 2.2

Gosh Adrian can you take a gripe tablet, and get over the blues and negativism so often heard from you. You seem angry, can you turn that energy to something of value?

      • In Vino 2.2.1

It doesn't look like Adrian is going to apologise for his ignorant rant. Reads a crap news report and leaps in, boots before brain…

Just in case Adrian has yet to understand, the first class ticket does NOT guarantee you a seat in a crowded train where you were unable to book a seat in advance. You get to ride on the floor of a first Class Carriage with your luggage until someone else gets out and you can take their seat.

Greta , unlike Adrian, knows that this is normal, and was NOT complaining when she posted her picture.

Got that, Adrian? Any apology coming on?

  3. Anker 3

Ffs Greta is amazing and it always seems to be white middle aged men who attack her (yes I am assuming alwyn and Adrian are said men, so do correct me if I am wrong.
greta more than anyone has voiced the understandable outrage of her generation

Heartiest congratulations Greta and ignore the bull shit

    • I feel love 3.1

I agree Anker, and I say that as a (proud) middle aged (46 middle aged???) white guy. She's indeed awesome, and upsetting the right people.

  4. Anker 4

Good on you I feel love. Not wanting to tar all middle aged white guys with the trump, Clarkson et al brush….

on a different but perhaps related note I went and bought the women’s weekly with Jacinda on the cover. Must be many, many years if ever since I have bought this sort of magazine, I did it in response to the #turn Arden campaign………will continue to buy any women’s magazines with Jacinda on the cover going forward. It’s really going to hurt #turn Arden when they have the wedding edition

    • Anne 4.1

Thanks for the reminder Anker. Off to the local supermarket tomorrow so will also uplift a WW. First time in 30 odd years.

      • Sacha 4.1.1

Leave em in waiting rooms all over. #blowback 🙂

        • Anne 4.1.1.1

Good idea. Off to hair-dresser Wed. Will 'contribute" to mags.

Might buy two and take one to Xmas day celebrations. That should be good for an old fashioned family row.

It's about Trust. When China rendition Hong Kong book publishers it broke the two system understanding. Similarly, when the gfs saw no heads roll, people began lowering their exposure to debt and those now distrusted big financiers.

How does China, or the world financial system, regain Trust?
