An announcement about the Serious Fraud Office investigation into the National Party is imminent.

The National Party affiliated Stats NZ released some data today suggesting the healthy homes bill was the reason rents have increased in Wellington.

The opposition jumped on this of course saying the government caused the rent spike because they provided basic rights for low income New Zealanders who, in their opinion, deserve no such basic rights.

I don't know much about statistics but it fascinates me Stats NZ can accurately determine rent rises and pin them on government policy but completely fail to keep a watch on very real disruptive tech like AirBNB which has exploded in this country and the world over, anecdotally of course because agencies responsible for gathering such information refuse to.

This tech removes housing from rental markets all over the world causing real damage to local communities but Stats NZ don't seem to give a shit. They are too busy working out ways to return the National Party to power.

At least some people are aware of the damaged caused by AirBNB:

A March 2019 report from the Economic Policy Institute says that “evidence suggests that the presence of Airbnb raises local housing costs” in American cities.

    • A 2.1

Yeah totes. Stats just added it's name to govt departments we can't trust. R

    • Sacha 2.2

Criticise Stats NZ, by all means, but they are far from a party-politcal government department.

Even Treasury are not 'working to get the Nats re-elected'; though their professional culture has been captured for decades by right-wing ideologies. Any neoliberal government will keep them happy.

    • James 2.3

And any evidence to back up your statement that stats Nz is national party affiliate ?

no of course not. You’re a liar.

[Contrast your comment with Sacha’s @ 2.2 immediately above (currently). Yours adds nothing and is simply flamebait, which sadly is not helpful. If you meant what you said yesterday “I’m here to help” then you would stop your stirring and lift your game. Just saying – Incognito]

      • Incognito 2.3.1

See my Moderation note @ 8:37 AM.

      • james 2.3.2

        Fair statement incognito.

Yes – I could have put it (a lot) better – but then the original claim should be held to account. When people are staying things that are demonstrably false – they deserve to be called out.

It seems (and of course this may be my impression only) that some people (normally of the left) can make claims, or call names, or make terrible comments without having them pulled up. Many examples eg – seems fine for some on here to call Paula Bennet or other Nat women "a bitch". If I did that about Jacinda – I would most likley cop a serious ban. No point me arguing that it was my personal view (as they did when I called them out) – it simply would not be found as acceptable when pointed at her.

In order for The Standard not to become even more of an echo chamber – perhaps a look at even commenting would be helpful (up to you – just as politely put suggestion)

regardless your mod point is noted. (and I do appreciate that it prob takes a lot more of your time than you would like)

        • Incognito 2.3.2.1

Hi James, I do think you have a point about Lefties getting away with more here than self-confessed or perceived Righties.

However, if someone were to call the PM names and give a solid reason for their opinion this would be different from simply swearing at the PM. Either way, you would generally not cop an immediate ban for that unless you have form and have been warned previously for the same thing.

Claims need to be backed-up regardless of who makes them.

Moderators cannot be everywhere all the time – this is not an excuse but a reality check.

It has been stated many times before here that criticism and robust debate are welcomed and encouraged but it is the way it is done that makes the difference. Constructive criticism is preferred! In any case, we don’t just ban people willy-nilly for having a dissenting opinion. However, it is fair to say that those people have to work a little harder than other commenters do; it is not for the faint-hearted to go against the flow. This Blog is left-leaning but the worst discussion threads, IMO, tend to be between Lefties. As a Moderator I feel between a rock and a hard place and without a clear policy violation there’s little I can do but it does my head at times 🙁

The last thing we want is for The Standard to turn into an echo chamber. I’d like to think we are not that close but we will not condone BS from Righties to avoid the perception of an echo chamber – I know that some already have this perception and that we shut down dissenting views but as far as I can tell this is often sour grapes and (by) people who have an axe to grind, usually with one specific Moderator here. Without exception, the culprits see things only one way – theirs – and take no responsibility whatsoever for their actions and behaviour.

The rules here are lenient and fairly easy to follow but it still surprises me how often people here have to be reminded of the site’s policy and rules and they are usually commenters who should know better!? Either they don’t care or they cannot help themselves; an example of familiarity breeds contempt?

I regard you as a bit of a stirrer, rightly or wrongly, and occasionally you go too far and you’ll receive a warning. Speaking for myself, my fuse is shorter after a long day/week. Moreover, it is not a good look if a stirrer starts calling out others and it tends to rub folks the wrong way but this doesn’t mean the call-out was misplaced or misguided. You need to decide for yourself what you want to do and how you want to behave on this site. I think there is more than enough room for you to ‘play’ here but that’s just my opinion 😉
