The landmark event was observed by several energy analysts, including at Watt Clarity and NEMLog, where Geoff Eldridge noted that a number of measures for South Australia demand notched up record minimums for system normal conditions.

This is good news and definitely a step in the right direction.
However it's worth keeping in mind that South Australia is one of the relatively few places on earth that can do this easily – having both excellent solar and wind energy potential, plenty of flat low value land, relatively close to the demand. (Note they still depend on natural gas to fill in the inevitable gaps in solar/wind sources.) It's no surprise they got to this milestone first.
Scaling this success up to where it can make a real difference where it matters – in the Northern Hemisphere – is a lot more ambitious. Here's what it might take:
