     Actually if you are off in Jan for good why did you even bother to return. IIRC lots of places don't have a US ambassador because no one got around to appointing one. Why were we not that lucky.

   Good old Catherine Delahunty spooned it onto James Shaw on RNZ this afternoon.

   And Hipkins is avoiding the smell.

   Hipkins deferred questions to the Ministers responsible and noted that the Green Party had advocated "quite strongly" for the funding.

   "It was one of their wins, if you like, out of the shovel-ready project area," he said. "It's not necessarily a project that I would've prioritised."

   Green School New Zealand, which opened in February, charges up to $24,000 a year for local students and up to $43,000 a year for international students.

   The school has about 50 students, half of whom come from overseas. The funding is designed to expand the school's capacity from 120 to 250 students.

   It was kind of left to Grant Robertson to do a mop up at the Covid update today.

   And as usual the Greens have had an attack of the vapours at the first sign of trouble.

   Why don’t they just own the damn thing or better still displayed some political nous for a change and buried the announcement with a whole lot of other projects? There’s like a 150 different proposals in this tranche of ‘shovel ready’ projects.

   In China, there is social credit rating and without a pass one cannot use public transport – within a city, let alone out of it.

   The West of course does not have anything so authoritarian, so organised by the state to control its citizens, it instead has personal and corporate brand value.

   I get that pork barrelling money to a private school (which as Ad has pointed out has a rather large foreign alumni) is not quite what the Green membership might have expected from their leadership. But don’t you think that publicly humiliating that leadership about seven weeks out from an election is just the teensiest bit risky? I mean it’s not like they’re polling that well to start with.

     It is undoubtably politically risky ….and Shaw should have had the nous to realise that weeks ago…or even a couple of days ago when he was touting it as a win…but he didnt and to expect the public to react against their instincts is naive in the extreme

       Agreed. But I am pleased that Shaw has come clean and admitted the mistake.

       This mistake is a minor one that does not figure greatly in the big scheme of things.

       I share James Shaw's hope that supporters will not dump the Green party over this, despite my previous loud complaints.

       James need not be a faultless leader (he can be replaced anyway if he does not learn) but the real Green Party policies need to be supported in this election.

   As far as the Greens are concerned there’s plenty of naïveté to go around it would seem. But somebody in the party really needs to kick some arse and remind them all of the greater battle that’s about to be joined. If you really want to get rid of a party leader then please focus on Judith and worry about Shaw after the election.

    Why the Green School?

    On April 1, the Government announced a $3 billion pool of funds targeted at organisations and businesses with projects impacted by Covid-19.

    A couple invested money in starting a school which sought international students and domestic students nationwide – a world class international environmentally focused start-up business which included bringing students’ families to live there.

    The school was opened in the summer, then Covid-19 hit and enrolments tanked, putting the next phase of their project at risk as the students and their families wanting to move to Taranaki could not enter New Zealand.

    The funding allows the school to continue with plans to double its capacity, despite lack of revenue flow because of the pandemic.

    Because it met the terms for government funding.

    And James Shaw liked the idea of such a school as part of a future Green education and Green economy for the Taranaki. On brand politics.

    Why not?

    1. It's government funding for a private school and the Green Party does not support this.

    Mitigation – its also economic development, as it draws international students.

    2. So many schools have projects they have to wait years to get funded.

    Mitigation – Shaw/the Green Party did not set the parameter for funding – excluding Health Boards and Schools – because the amount of $3B was not enough to meet all their wants/needs.

    3. But its also off brand for a party seeking to raise more tax revenue form the wealthy and provide more support to those on low incomes. As it's a business catering to a well to do clientelle.

    It's a bit like Turei 2017, in reverse.

      The rich setting up a scheme to sell visa's to other rich people for entry to NZ while the taxpayers fund the infrastructure which remains privately owned.

      Honestly the Green' s would have been better to stick more solar on existing state schools but if james is prepared to walk it back I could forgive this.

        The government bails out the shareholders of Air NZ all the time and their business is bringing in rich foreigners … no smiley (none is quite right).

        Shaw has admitted his mistake, but the government is going ahead to honour the committment already made – puting solar into schools is not within the terms of reference for government funding to projects impacted by the pandemic.

          nah, putting solar on the roofs of schools for the poor in this country would be so gauche, lest they start believing they to were entitled to nice things.

          but nice things are for people from overseas that can cough up 48.000 for a year of fees and give the parents and other children a residence permit.

          Oh well. Its green so there is that.

          I just hope that the resident lefties on this block that constantly whinge about 'foreign' students shut up.

          Good grief, this whole story is just a saga of idiocy, stupidity and above all smugness. All at the feet of the government. And it should never have been the Greens part in announcing this crap. If only for reasons of self preservation. Sometimes something green is not green, its just green bucks.

    Unfortunately James can’t walk it back that much. The Finance Minister (you recognise him, he’s the one wearing the long pants?) has made it clear the agreement will be honoured. So it looks like Labour is going to have to clean this one up.

    Oh well I guess there’s one consolation, if voters ultimately decide the Greens are too flaky to be trusted with the Treasury benches Labour will most likely be the main beneficiary of their collapsing vote looking for a home. Plus if they fall below the 5% threshold, and assuming Labour is the largest party on election night, then Labour will benefit most from that wasted vote distribution. Who knows, it might just be enough to get them over the line on their own.

      I don't think he did after the sexual assault case, so unless Hamilton has got a lot wiser, which it hasn't, I doubt the blatant racism will have any effect.
