This second of 3 budgets for the Minister of Finance next month.

WELLINGTON, April 29 (Reuters) – New Zealand Finance Minister Nicola Willis said on Tuesday baseline spending in the 2025 budget would be reduced to NZ$1.3 billion ($777.14 million) from a forecast of NZ$2.4 billion, as she outlined worsening economic conditions in the country.

“That lower growth trajectory has an inevitable impact on the government books, reducing revenue and threatening our already difficult return to surplus and debt reduction,” she said at a speech to the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Some governments have a reputation for small operating allowances.

And the third one will be in election year. Willis be three-strikes-out?

That 'lower growth trajectory and the inevitable impact on government books' is her responsibility.

Hipkins and Edmonds really need to take the blow torch to Luxon and Willis on this now and keep it up for the next 18 months. No prisoners.

2 old ferries instead of 3 for the next 4 years. neither rail enabled, take a bow national you useless barstards.

I think there was always going to be a reset period when the current fleet would be disrupted because of port upgrades, the difference is with iRex when the ports were done the new ships would arrive. That's called planning. But now we still have no ships confirmed and the port work means the Aratere can't operate and when the port work is done there will still be no ships until 2030, the Aratere not being brought back into service.

That's 5 years of inefficient road bridging thanks to Nicola Willis and Winston Peters.

" the difference is with iRex when the ports were done the new ships would arrive."

That was certainly not going to be the case. The spips were supposed to be delivered in 2025 and 2026. One ship each year.

Since the cost of any terminal work kept getting more expensive I gather that Robertson had never actually supplied any money and at the time of the 2023 election no money had been put up and no work had commenced at the ports.

Do you really believe that they could, even if Labour had won the election and put up the money in the 2024 Budget that the infrastructure could have been ready for the ship's arrival in 2025?

We would have had ships arriving and nowhere for them to berth.

That's because the National Party are so partisan when it comes to infrastructure projects, particularly projects involving public transport and rail. Roberston was well aware of this tendency and it was an election year. National have since changed their tune with Bishop now begging Labour to cooperate on all their projects.

If work had started in 2023 (I think preliminary work was underway in Picton) with cross party support there's no reason why dock side facilities would not be ready by 2025/26. But National were too busy politicking and attack campaigning in 2023 to be thinking about serious stuff.

This is National's screw up and that's how the public see it. So uninterested in a robust Cook Straight connection they have palmed it off onto Winston Peters who is notorious for not getting stuff done. He’s all talk, no trousers.

Construction had started, on the new terminals, we just needed a minister with a bit of steel in them to go crack the whip and crack a few heads over pathetic cost forecasting, and those ferries would have been good to go starting this year,

Burr is being kind (or a suck up to willis) she is a pathologically small minded and short sighted,

This Alwyn is untrue, I am in construction and companies that I contract to had already been working on the Wellington port, This work stopped as soon as the coc got elected

Alwyn never let's the truth get in the way of a good story

          • alwyn 2.2.1.3.2

A person I knew, also in the industry, told me that nothing was underway because the then Government wouldn't give a go-ahead for the build.

Whether "nothing" meant absolutely nothing at all may be open to question. I can't ask him unfortunately.

I still don't see how they could possibly have completed the work in order to have the new infrastructure available for use this year though.

            • bwaghorn 2.2.1.3.2.1

              Hear say your honor!!!

I distinctly recall them having something going on down the ports that needed stopping by willis.

  3. Ad 3

This ban on all prisoners voting, apart from a huge human rights outrageous, is also taking 10,000 votes off Labour and TPM given the general prison population.

You can see the political upside the way Luxon says " I don't care."

    A disgusting Prime Minister.
