Dear Hamish please keep it up

One of the more annoying twitterers is Hamish Price.  His tweets are regularly spun so far his eyes must be watering when he hits the tweet button.  And they are so lame.  If Hamish is National’s foremost twitterer amongst its supporters it has problems.

Over the weekend he sent this tweet.

It wasn’t even funny.  But what was really appalling was that the photo was a year old.  And the young person with Jacinda was a cancer survivor.

It was pointed out repeatedly to Hamish that the photo was a year old.  But he kept the tweet up for quite a while and did not delete it until the complainant went public.  The detail is in this article by Lana Andelane at Newshub:

At the time of writing, the post had been liked more than 180 times and retweeted 62 times.

On Saturday night, Madgwick responded to Price in an impassioned public Facebook post, claiming the man’s tweet – which he since defended as “lighthearted” – was an “outright lie”.

“Please stop using my photo you had no permission to use, to further your political slander. The photo was taken a year ago. I was not tackled to the ground by Jacinda Ardern’s bodyguards. You have outright lied to the public,” she responded alongside the same image.

“My name is Olivia Madgwick from New Plymouth Taranaki. In 2019 My stepdad Francis Kelly took me to this [Labour] meeting to share my story, as I have dealt with a brain stem tumour and fluid on my brain and with that we got a picture as it inspired her.

“I posted this on [Jacinda’s] supporters’ page as I have been told so much how we look like sisters. If you want to follow my Facebook page (Liv’s Lane) which goes into a bit more detail about myself not at all her doing any non social distancing [sic]. I only left my house finally last week.

“That is the truth behind this photo.”

Hamish could have done the good old Catholic response, admit he was wrong and apologise for the hurt caused.

Instead he did a bit of a woe is me.

https://twitter.com/hamishpricenz/status/1269410808938684417

While Hamish is on his on his social distancing crusade he may want to check out this particularly interesting example.

I hope Hamish keeps up his current approach.  Kiwis are clearly tired of dirty politics.

Pretty says how desperate National and its supporters are at the moment.

  2. Sanctuary 2

Fifteen years after dirty politics, Simon Lusk is still pretending to be Slater, Hamish price has yet to be disowned by National and Hooten is now on Todd Mullers staff.

    • tc 2.1

Fifteen years after of evolving dirty politics IMO. They've got zero independent media so it's been all too easy to game the system even getting the taxpayer to pay for Hoots pimping up Muller on RNZ.

  3. observer 3

The important difference between Price and many other political Tweeters (left or right) is that he doesn't just express extreme opinions, he tells complete lies – which are easily disproved. Despite this … he is still re-tweeted approvingly by National MPs, and given a platform in various media.

One small example (there are many more):

Price lies about an opinion poll

Again, the difference is important here. If you say "I reckon National will be 50% in the next poll" you might be a bit loopy but it's only a biased hope (we can all do those).

But Price is lying about a poll which did not exist. He knew nothing about the Colmar Brunton poll, because nobody did – not even Colmar Brunton. They were phoning people at the time.

It backfired on Price (it usually does). But he keeps telling the lies because he is expected to. His party is fine with him doing it. (When a National leader calls him out, let me know).

    • observer 3.1

And an example of a National MP agreeing with Price ("Well said").

He has since deleted it but the exchange is here

Note that many such tweets are deleted, so we can't always link to the original. But it happens often, because Price and National are hand in glove.

      • I Feel Love 3.1.1

There was ranting and raving about "socialism creeping in" because of all the covid posters about, esp the "be kind" ones! Just bizarre and paranoid claims, laughable really, then you get Nat MPs agreeing with them.

      • dv 3.1.2

AND in the multiple replies to the tweets I read there was NOT ONE positive comment about the tweet.

        NOT ONE.

      • dv 3.1.3

AND in the multiple exchanges to the tweets I read there was NOT ONE positive comment about the tweet.

        NOT ONE.

      • mac1 3.1.4

I have looked again at the original tweet that Stuart Smith MP said he did not fully read before tweeting his approval of it.

Smith said that while he had not fully read the text he did agree with the sentiment that triggered his dislike of a schoolteacher persona. That must have been the bit from Hamish Price referring to the 'six year old child'.

That reference immediately preceded the reference to the 'intellectually disabled', in the same sentence.

Stuart Smith expects us to believe these three things. 1. He did not read the whole text. 2. He has the stupidity to tweet an agreement with something he has not fully read. 3. There is nothing to apologise about- to the intellectually disabled, or to the 1000 plus school teachers in his electorate who are predominantly women.

I don’t believe any of the three. That makes him stupid to look like a liar in his attempt to excuse his acceptance of Price's putdowns and avoid a backdown and apology.

I will leave the question of his mysogyny and his putdown of school teachers to those 1000+ teachers, their partners, their children, their friends and their students alike.

        • Stuart Smith, good god.

A more useless MP you will never find.

And I do happen to live in the Kaikoura Electorate and have never set eyes on the geyser.

Where do the National Party find them ?

          • mac1 3.1.4.1.1

He found himself and promoted himself into taking the electorate off Colin King MP in an organised electorate coup. Colin King was also a low-ranked MP for his nine years 2005-2014 and not very able. He was, however, in my opinion a decent man.

After the Muller coup, Smith's rating was raised to be exactly halfway in the National rankings. He won't make cabinet in 2020 should National win, which is very unlikely. In 2023, he will also have had nine years in Parliament and be in turn ready for a coup or to retire with the 9 year pension.

Unless National voters saw the possibilities of MMP and voted out their own poor performers, before the coup……….

        • Adrian 3.1.4.2

Or the very real possibility is that Stuart can't read !

And if he doesn't want to be treated like a 6 year old, stop fucking acting like one.

  4. Maurice 4

It is not National we need to worry about but the Silent Hard Right which is formenting.

    • observer 4.1

But that's the whole point. Read Price's threads on Twitter. Look at who applauds him, look at their bios and shudder. Q-Anon, wild conspiracy theorists, literal fascists.

He provides "respectable" cover for the most extreme Right.

  5. DirkDirkin 5

Hamish Price the National Party insider (Todd McClays senior adviser and Bridges social media writer), uses a year old photo to malign Ardern and claim she ordered DPS to wrestle someone to the ground. Really, is this all that National have?

  6. Incognito 6

National is the Party that claims to be strong on Law & Order. The Party that stands strong on personal choices and responsibility. The one Party that rules them all, but not by example, and not for all.

Take Matt King, for example, a former Police Officer, no less, who also seem to think that rules are the plebs, the great un-washed, but not for him, no Sir!

    https://www.odt.co.nz/star-news/star-national/national-mp-social-distancing-rules-st-jacinda-are-rubbish

Well, Mr King, you might be right, but as an elected representative, you have to uphold the rules and set an example. Your compass is off and you don’t belong in Parliament, IMO. Mind you, you’re ranked #40 on your Party List so they obviously don’t rate you that highly. What was that? Did you say you hold a safe Seat? Look over your shoulder, bro.

    • observer 6.1

      National MP says "Nazi Germany".

Just another day, another informed and intelligent contribution to NZ political debate. Thanks Matt!

      • Incognito 6.1.1

Meh, I say bangers with mash, they say Sauerkraut mit Wurst. There’s no political debate in NZ, at least not one that involves all 120 MPs. Forget debate, we’re on the election trail now. National has been there all that time since they screwed up badly in 2017 and gave away their poll position to be in Government. They couldn’t even manage a Coalition deal! Which is even more telling when you consider that they would do anything (yes, Meatloaf, anything) for power.

  7. Sacha 7

At least Shub updated their story to call Price "a right-wing former political advisor". The original version made it sound like he was some ordinary member of the public.

Time for everyone to call him a 'Nat party operative' to be clearer about where he sits in the political ecosystem. We need to be ready for several months of muck.

    • weka 7.1

does he still have known formal ties to the National Party?

      • Sacha 7.1.1

'Formal' ties is missing the point with these guys. Have Farrar or Hooton over the years? Slater?

        • weka 7.1.1.1

formal ties isn't missing the point, I simply wanted to know if there were still any or if he's in the underground.

    • Peter 7.2

They say 'former' to indicate it's something he left behind. He was formerly a child with the consequent limited brain development but they didn't say he was 'formerly' a child.

      I'll draw my own conclusions.

  8. Reality 8

Hamish Price comments that he had been “abused” online after his tweet. Typical bullying type, doesn’t like it when they are found out. Wonder if Todd Muller’s Christian beliefs will ensure the dirty politics are not part of the election campaign. Trouble is, these operatives are usually at a distance from the leader. Remember Jason Ede, the silent operator, out of the public eye?

  9. weka 9

Gifting Labour some good MSM PR is probably worth it in exchange for amplification of his message to the people he is dog whistling. Maybe he's an idiot with bad PR skills. Or maybe he's a right wing operative who is on mission with creating social divides and helping the hard right to grow.

I'm not sure about the value for the left there in helping with the amplification.

  10. Leighton 10

Who is he working for now, or is he a liar/propogandist for the sheer love of the game?

  11. Graeme 11

That second photo at Coronet Peak, and the policy announcement it relates too should have some serious scrutiny.

$100 million straight into the pockets of tourism’s biggest players, decided by tourism’s biggest players and the National Party. Policy for donations or vice-versa.

  12. Muttonbird 12

It is great to see the venom of the right wing really be put on display. It's always been there but the very very nasty part inhabited by the Bridges crowd including Hamish Price and David Farrar, etc has been broken up and tossed aside and they don'y like it on bit.

  13. Ken 13

Hardly worth dignifying him with a page.

  14. Absolutely agree with all comments the man is a political idiot thank god hes in the losing party hes good for labour so let's let him rant on
