Fozzie Bear: John Key’s secret fursona

From Boing Boing:

Furries get no respect. Usually, when you hear about people who dress up like life-sized stuffed animals, it’s in the context of an unfriendly internet joke, a sex gag on Entourage, or an insult that ends with “yiff in hell.”

But Brooklyn-based filmmaker Marianne Shaneen has spent more than two years following these people around, capturing their lives in and out of their “fursonas.” She’s working on a documentary film called AMERICAN FURRY: Life, Liberty and the Fursuit of Happiness.

So, do you support freedom of sexual expression between consenting adults in all forms, or are you drawing comparison between John Key and Furries in order to ridicule him – thereby implying a negative perception of their lifestyle? Would you attempt to ridicule John Key by making a similar comparison to homosexuality, or is it only OK to make fun of some types of sexual expression?

Perhaps your concept of respecting others and their diversity is the same as John A’s. His was demonstrated by his unnecessary denigration of the way the Exclusive Brethren choose to dress: http://www.thestandard.org.nz/?s=hankie

I personally believe that we should all respect each other, and we should be especially careful not to ridicule groups in our society in the context of making a cheap political gag on a public forum.

I believe that most Furries and most EBs would ignore these comments. I’m not suggesting that they’re thin skinned. However, it’s a slippery slope once we start marginalizing people for sexual practices or religious beliefs… especially in a political context.

    In short… grow up.

    Oh Camryn, get over yourself.

  3. Camryn 3

How about you get over yourself? Or, do you think your childish posts are actually worthwhile?

  4. Dark Watcher 4

Camryn I’m already sick to death of the nauseating political correctness on the left and the last thing I want to see is simpering mealy-mouthed right wingers taking us down that road too. I hate to agree with the Labour apologists who run this site but get over yourself.

  5. Camryn 6

Like I said, I think people generally have thick enough skin to handle this. I’m not offended by the political incorrectness as much as I am by the hypocrisy.

The general tone of this blog is that the left cares about all groups, and seeks an fair and just society, whereas the right somehow doesn’t. I just calling “bullshit”.

If you believe that society should respect everyone, then don’t contradict yourself… even with silly little “joke” posts.

Do yourself a favour and debate on the issues, instead of childish nonsense.

  6. Nih 7

The general tone of this blog

That’s subject to your own interpretation. I have perceived the opposite. The key here is probably not to try to take any moral high ground when you’re bitching someone else out for what you think are their failings. Get down in the muck.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdX_OBUeHb4

    That’s fucking hilarious.

  7. Camryn 8

There was a thread where I asserted that both left and right philosophies are moral, but depend on different methodologies and definitions. I was told that only the left is moral, and that well meaning people on the right are simply deluded. So, that’s why I find the general tone here to be very self-righteous.

It seems like all_your_base thinks that making fun of those who are different is OK if he does it, because he’s from the caring left.

I am admittedly making a mountain out of a molehill, but it just happens to be a point that I’m worked up on. I don’t like hypocrisy or those who consider their ideology to be morally superior and therefore shut their mind to valid points of debate from other ideologies.

    I’ll shut up now.

  8. Nih 9

There was a thread where I predicted that as a truly developed society one day we’ll do away with applying morals to everything and instead agree on a set of ethics.

In my opinion The Standard does a good job of looking to ethics before morals. In fact, I think they leave their morals out of their posts most of the time.

Perhaps you’re confusing trying to be clear and articulate with being self-righteous. I don’t want to sound like I’m trying to be mean to you like I am to the trolls, but it doesn’t sound like you’ve grasped the essence of the debate. Don’t focus on the language used regardless of if it’s highbrow or lowbrow from where you stand, or you’ll seem like a dick.

  9. Nih 10

Also, don’t shut up. I like it when reasoned debate drowns out the fucktards.

And yes, I’m doing a wonderful job of sniping at them from an otherwise polite post. 😉

Nothing bad being a furry, they’re nice and kind and life-long friends if you know them better.
