Goodbye Gladys

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has resigned not only as Premier but also from the New South Wales Parliament.

She was something of a go to politician for Mike Hosking, desperately seeking for a right wing version of Jacinda Ardern who he could hold up as being better.

In particular he triumphed New South Wales insipid version of a lockdown and its placing of business interests above health advice.  The result is plain to see, Covid is now rampant in New South Wales and there is no way back.

This graph shows how important the intensity of the lock down is.  New Zealand still has a chance of containing the latest outbreak, Victoria at the same stage was struggling but even then for New South Wales it was all over.

Hosking could have chosen Annastacia Palaszczuk to hold up after all Queensland’s Covid response is after all very good.  But there is one problem.  Palaszczuk is a Labor Premier.  Hosking’s bias is so pronounced.  That he continues to be able to spread his disinformation shows how ideologically biased a large part of our media is.

Berejiklian’s fall was utterly predictable and it was only a matter of when.  The Independent Commission against Corruption yesterday formally announced that it was investigating her involvement in grants handed to the Australian Clay Target Association in 2016-17 and the Riverina Conservatorium of Music in Wagga Wagga in 2018.  Her long time with disgraced former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire is the cause of the problem.  The ICAC had previously recommended charges be considered against Maguire for possibly giving false evidence during its inquiry into his actions in attempting to use his position as a parliamentarian to secure property deals for companies he was representing.  His association with Chinese Businessman Jimmy Liu, whose company allegedly swindled vast sums from Australians and became embroiled in a devastating international fraud did not help.

It is mind boggling the level of corruption that happens in Australian politics.  And it is unbelievable that Hosking should champion someone who not only was bad at her job in handling Covid but was so compromised.

Update:  This ABC video pulls no punches.

I had to look twice at the graph to find the NZ daily cases , yes its the small black bars to the left ( time since outbreak)

“My C**kskin” and Gladys deserve each other! Happy Days…

In the grand tradition of New South Wales' endemic corruption.

    Who is the likely replacement?

And does this give the NSW Labor team a shot at winning?

I take it you don't like her

    • Patricia Bremner 4.1

No it is her behaviour, not her person Chris T, and Hoskins screeching affirmations of her and denunciations of Jacinda. He won't admit he got it wrong though… not for a minute. He appears to be a bad judge of character, or it fitted his agenda at the time.

      • chris T 4.1.1

Forgive me. But have never had a lot of time to take persons views seriously for people who are in a relationship with our PM's on a first name friendly basis.

Unless of course you referred to Key as "John"

        Can't remember

From yesterday's report (Stuff, and other media):

Berejiklian left the press conference without taking any questions.

Mike wouldn't like that, would he?

But it's his own fault. The Curse of Hosking strikes again … whenever he complains about Ardern and tells her to be like A.N.Other, that person will fall.

    Scott Morrison should be worried.

The Curse of Hosking strikes again … whenever he complains…

I have commented before that Mike Hosking has a nearly perfect track record. If he complains about something or even anything – then you can pretty much guarantee that whatever he is moaning about is a good idea.

When ever he says that something is better, then inevitably it turns out that whoever it is or whatever idea it is – will turn out to be a dud or outright disaster.

Remember when he was proclaiming that the the government was over reacting to covid-19, and that we should be as relaxed about it as Trump / Boris / Sweden? Or that having a travel bubble with Australia would be safe?

Or that car-crashes were all 'idiot-related', just before crashing an uninsured a 140k Alfa Romeo? Well ok – he was probably correct on that one.

He has been like that forever – an incredibly stupid ignorant narcissistic person whose only real skill appears to be in self-promotion. But he is reliably wrong on (almost) everything over the long term. You can bet on it.

Hoskin backs another winner. Another win for Hoskin.

  6. AB 6

Hey MS – you've called him "Hopkins" at one point. Might be confusing him with Jim Hopkins, who (though mildly amusing when younger) by the time he reached his dotage was not a lot better than Hosking. Ultimately he became famous mostly for wearing glasses with coloured frames. Hosking's legacy will be similarly derisory.

I doubt that you are confusing Hosking with the great late Victorian English Catholic poet GM Hopkins – a sensitive genius rather than a dishonest scoundrel

  7. chris T 7

And I think you are internally sub-conconciously morphing Hosking into Hipkins, with "Hopkins" which if nothing else, is amusing.

  8. tc 8

Inevitable given the company she's kept and hoskins again displays where his values reside.

A savvy media operator would've hedged their bets as the corruption charges were signalled last year IIRC.

  9. fender 9

I'm sure the FoxTalk ZB dork will set the record straight in another meth-like rant early next week with explanations like: It's a beat-up, It's guilty by association, It's a leftist smear campaign, It's character assasination of an incredibly talented and most competent leader, Shes definitely not a lying corrupt hussy and I've never been wrong, nor will I ever be etc etc

  10. DukeEll 10

So “bye Gladys” because Hoskins cites her as an example?

Her handling of covid was extraordinary up until delta. Far better than the ruler of Danistan down south. Who even with harsher lockdowns than NSW can’t control delta.

hoskins is an idiot, but you can’t judge a leader by their non voting fanbois. I thought she did remarkably well for her position. Her private life hot mess on the other hand…

  11. Hoskings on Gladys – before the NSW lockdown:

"Berejiklian is Australia's most successful premier. Her state is the best economic performer, she is popular, and she has led far and away Australia's most successful COVID response."

I wonder if he ever reflects on what he writes?

    • Barfly 11.1

Reminds me of a line in the first gumball rally movie – i think

"What's behind me is not important"

narcisists only interested in one reflection . they have very little awareness of self . i.e.trump .

    • Anne 11.3

Narcissists never reflect on what they say or write. They have the ability to block off all memory of their failures and misdiagnosis. It enables them to continue to misguide people with their false reckons.

I had the misfortune to be associated with one such person. They can do a lot of damage.

A good summary around Maguire and his secret girlfriend

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/sep/16/as-nsw-icac-renews-its-investigation-into-daryl-maguire-what-has-the-watchdog-uncovered-so-far

'According to the documents, Ayres initially declined to support the then $4.5m request for the project because it fell outside the scope of current sport and recreation funding programs, and was in excess of the maximum grant.'

'supported a larger funding submission for the Australian Clay Target Association, which was put forward to the Expenditure Review Committee (ERC) of cabinet in December 2016. It was ultimately funded by RestartNSW – a fund controlled by Treasury.' [Berejiklian was Treasurer]

'reveal the convention centre project was initially not supported by Treasury because it did not have a positive business case.'

However, the funding was set aside by ERC in December 2016 and provided a pathway to approval provided conditions were met. Infrastructure NSW then appears to have taken over reviewing the project and once it was assessed again after changes, the project was green-lighted in August 2018.'

Seems to have everything wrong about the eligibility and low value for money and yet ..

  13. Joe90 13

Berejiklian's government spent $200m of federal bushfire recovery funding without opening applications. Only $2.5m went to Labor seats and the bush fire affected Blue Mountains got nothing.

    Rotten.

    https://amp.abc.net.au/article/13263148?

    • Ghostwhowalksnz 13.1

Two of the grants werent even eligible as they we outside bush fire affected areas: in your link.

'The NSW government put forward to the federal agency funding approvals for Rowlee Wines for $425,522 to fund a farm to table restaurant and event space in Orange, NSW.

The government also put forward an approval for Nick O'Leary Wines for $421,000 to fund a cellar door, restaurant and function centre in Wallaroo, NSW.

A new Federal election is highly likely in the next few months and the the corruption will likely increase as the 'buy seats' that are at risk, and favour mates.

  14. KJT 14

    Shows priorities.

She had to resign, and can be charged, with some shady deals with money.

The murderously incompetent reaction to covid, which has cost three Aussie States,, and New Zealand, will remain unpunished!

Hoskins, ACT, National MP's and heavyweights in NZ business, will continue to push us to be like NSW, without any fear of consequences.

  15. The whole saga brilliantly captured in limerick form!
