As funny as ‘Trotie’. Especially the comments with the creator effortlessly taking the piss out of the moaners whinging about him ‘disrespecting’ the All Blacks.
I don’t see it that way. I don’t think it’s insulting to the All Blacks or the haka. It’s just some humour. It’s certainly not intended to be hurtful.
The haka is appropriated in all kinds of manners in our modern culture, can humour not be one of them? I don’t think the All Blacks or the haka ought to be so sacred as to be protected from a bit of satire. Many of the Maori commenters on the youtube page seem to feel the same way.
But I’m interested to hear what you think is insulting and disrepectful about it.
Taking the piss out of the all blacks is sweet – who cares – the flowers in the video, the scrum on the bed – all fine by me – great fun. But as you mention, ‘the haka is appropriated in all kinds of manners in our modern society’, which I don’t agree with, because it minimises Māori culture, by decontextulizing it, and for me that is what the video supported, in the same way as the spice girls haka or the gingerbread haka and so on, did. I spose it would be the same for me if a pōwhiri was cut up, soundtracked, and put out there. But that is just me and my opinion and I have been told i’m over-sensitive to these things – but there you go.
Ka Mate is already decontextualised; it’s Te Rauparaha’s haka and has a history far beyond the All Blacks. Whatever you think of him there’s a history to this haka that’s often overlooked. Was pleased when the ABs commissioned another, haven’t looked into why they’ve gone back to Ka Mate but I recall it being unpopular…

“Especially the comments “
Oh good lord. Rugbyheads commenting on youtube was never going to be a mensa meeting, was it.
Disrespectful and insulting to tangata whenua IMO, par for the course in this country.
A very clever Haka video. Someone has humour and skill on their side. Lighten up folks!
