Labour is New Zealand’s oldest political party. It was born 100 years ago today as an amalgamation of several groups (including the Socialist Party which dated back to 1901). Labour has a proud record of achievements, including the building of state houses, the creation of a comprehensive social welfare system, brave stances like our iconic nuclear free policy, and the establishment of Kiwi institutions like Pharmac, EQNZ, KiwiBank and KiwiSaver. It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, Rogernomics and the associated social and political upheaval were a dark and difficult time. But while the world has changed hugely, and the mass participation of people in politics has waxed and waned, Labour’s mission today is as important as it ever was.
