“Having a Whale of a time”

In July 2011, John Key was on holiday in Maui “having a whale of a time” – and also on Q+A in New Zealand letting the world know that Phil Goff was briefed by Warren Tucker. So they do have the telephone in Hawaii.

Here’s what Key said to Guyon Espiner on Q+A on 24 July 2011 – while he was on holiday in Hawaii:

GUYON Did you brief Phil Goff?

JOHN  Phil Goff was briefed, yeah, that’s right.  I personally didn’t brief him, but my understanding from the director of SIS, Warren Tucker, is that he was briefed and he was shown the same note and report that I saw.

GUYON Is the file closed?

JOHN Yeah.  It closed on- I probably won’t tell you the day, but it’s closed.

Here’s what Key said to media today when queried about the contradictions between what Warren Tucker and Beverley Wakem wrote in 2011 and said today:

“All I can tell you is I was having myself a whale of a time on holiday in Hawaii but nothing to do with Whaleoil.”

I’ll be surprised if Key’s back on Morning Report tomorrow.
