     Exactly where though? Need link address as there is lots of stuff to look through, art and creativity expand here. But where is the detail on a world without money?

   Crikey, Leunig, old mate, it's gone noon and no-one is checking in here? (Except this cryptic joker BydOnz who just wandered in and on). Reckon all the standard folks must've got to where they're going. Seems like Robby G's shot through. Trust some carnivorous plant hasn't taken him out.

   Weeell, never mind, set down the swag and have a yarn. We'll boil the billy ~ Mista Smokey's the name ~No politics on Sundays, eh!

   This morning I've mended boots. Modern, light-weight to suit me now. But shortish life. The uppers go, in all sorts o'ways, so I've thought them goners. Then realised, naaah…Cut patches from a discarded car inner-tube to suit ~ and good as any surgeon, glue 'em on.

   The hill up there? White Rock. I call her 'Little Quartz Mountain.' I'm up there often. There's an old track. The owners allow folk to walk it, with permission. Seems like the steep hillsides were burned by farmers, maybe around 120 years ago. I'm guessing a number didn't return from WW1, and survivor-farmers maybe found things too steep after all. So, where there's no pines, she's regenerating great. Thirty years ago, owners and community planted 5,000 totara, obtained from a nursery closing down. They are growing up handsome as us.

   Last winter (with permission), I planted natives, mostly rimu, in gullies up there. Matai also. After all, there's their mighty ancestor-trees in precious bush-remnants down here.

   How about a bit later we head up there together, Michael? Every week or two through this drought, I give my bush-babies up there a drink. And filling the water-containers in a lovely pool of our never-failing stream, weeell…guess who turns up?……I'll tell you. Boppa the mighty tuna. Swinging easy, with hope, around my legs. So of course I offer meat-bits that just happen to be ready in my pockets. Gently taken, too. Beautiful. She's m'mate……Then farewell to my girl, it's onwards and upwards to nurture the little tree whanau. How good is all this eh?

     Great to read your various ventures Mista Smokey. Interesting stuff you write. Robert G originally set up this post to encourage such as yourself. Not for him to dominate but encourage others but it seems that not enough are committed to thinking beyond the 'topical' as the heading says. Others are disappointed in aspects of the blog and have withdrawn. It all seems a bit somnolent here. I have disturbed the feminists, Robert has been criticised by lprent when he was deeply annoyed about something, and there seems a lack of vigour from other commenters for thinking up anything individually, just praising Greta for jumping up and down and saying what we are thinking.

     I thought it was a rare, good place for philosophy, the 'deep stuff' about 'the future' that it is archived under. I have enjoyed reading what good-hearted others have discovered in philosophy, overseas publications, NZ gems, little gardening hints, activity on drought, flood, fire and famine so we know what is happening and adapting around the world. Part of what I enjoyed touched on how we all think, and how that thinking could change so we could live in a more co-operative way while respecting the individual, allowing shades of diversity instead of consensus and conformity, and how love for one another could colour our destinies. Perhaps many are too busy actually doing it, to even write in and encourage us others? I don't know. And as the heading says, it isn't quantity that counts, it is the quality.

     Did you grow the Matai from seed? Where'd you get the seed from.

     I've been making a bed frame. There's a pile of ex aluminum window pallets left in the shed from when the house was built I guess. Harvesting 4 x 2 is damned hard. All nailed with a gun. I could use some of the precious Rimu Ive gathered, but which piece. I might need that bit for something else and that bit's too long – too much waste.

     Daughter still cant get her damned car started so picked some blackberries and kicked the rooster outta the chook pen. Acting like a republican she said he was.

       Matai can be hard to grow from seed. It can take 2 years sometimes. It has a hard casing that can take a bit of work to break down/break dormancy. Most seed is best sown in a mineral bed (sand or very fine gravel). Colin Burrows has an article on it somewhere. Same with miro. Seed can be gathered from under mature trees.

       Brigid, the matai, rimu (and lancewoods) came from the fine local nursery, specialising in natives.

       Yes, the plants are great. But your para #3 is a classic creation too.
