ImperatorFish: Hands off!

So where do we go from here? The polls are all bad for Labour, and the only good news story coming from the dirty politics fiasco is that someone finally managed to make a living from his blogging. Cameron Slater’s success story has given hope to a whole new generation of sociopaths.

Maybe the polls are wrong. Maybe they’ll bounce back before September 20. Who can understand the sheeple people of this country?

John Key has served up so many lies, half-truths and evasions over his party’s role in dirty politics, that if he’d been David Cunliffe John Armstrong would have demanded his immediate execution.

But the polls show that the general public don’t seem to care about things like honesty and integrity. It’s okay that John Key lies and uses underhanded tactics to remain in power, because he’s a good bloke. He’s the politician everyone wants to get a selfie with, or to have a beer with. Everyone wants to be part of the winning #TeamKey. They all want some of that John Key magic, and why not? It’s a great act! Key is a consummate performer, and the lies slip off his tongue with ease. Key and his office are up to their necks in dirty politics, but it’s all the left’s fault. The exposure of National’s filthy tactics has been the only real story in this election campaign, and the general public have reacted by punishing Labour. At least that’s what the polls seem to be saying.

Maybe the general public instinctively thought that if something bad was going on, it had to be all David Cunliffe’s fault.

I’m an optimist by nature, but it’s difficult to feel positive about Labour’s chances on September 20. So should Labour throw in the towel? Should we just go home and lick our wounds? Yes, we could do that. And then after the election is over we’ll tear ourselves to pieces over who within the party is to blame for the defeat, even though it’s ALL THE MEDIA’S FAULT!

Or do we fight?

When I think of the struggle ahead of Labour, I contemplate that inspirational battle speech from the film Braveheart:

William Wallace: I am William Wallace! And I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny. You’ve come to fight as free men… and free men you are. What will you do with that freedom? Will you fight?

Veteran: Fight? Against that? No! We will run. And we will live.

William Wallace: Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you’ll live… at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin’ to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they’ll never take… OUR FREEDOM!

It pays not to dwell on the fact that Wallace was eventually defeated, and was later captured and brutally killed by the English; while the man who spoke those powerful words in the film turned out to be a raging anti-Semite. Sometimes things don’t work out the way we planned them.

But let’s go on, and keep up the fight. These crooked Tories may take away my country, my hope, and even my self-respect, but there’s one thing they’ll never have.

Wait a minute. It seems they have taken my freedom too.

Okay, let me start that again.

These crooked Tories may take away my country, my hope, my self-respect, and my freedom, but there’s one thing they’ll never have. I’ll die a thousand deaths before I relinquish my collection of Dr Who DVD box sets to anyone.

Some lines must never be crossed.
