Is Ted Cruz the dumbest politician ever?

Now that Donald Trump has more time to play golf and attend court there will be jockeying for leadership of the Republican Party, or what will be left of it once Trump’s new Patriot Party emerges.

One early contender is Ted Cruz.  There is a problem with him however, he is an imbecile.

The proof is in this tweet.

Just in case there is someone reading this who does not know what the Paris Climate Agreement is, it is a multilateral International Treaty under which 196 different countries have pledged to make cuts to their greenhouse gas emissions in the hope that we do not cook the planet.

If successful it will help the citizens of Paris.  It will also help the citizens of Pittsburgh and every other city in the world for that matter.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had the perfect ziger.

If Cruz is the best the Republicans have they are in trouble.

I dunno – there are some pretty strong local contenders.

Gerry for instance – who doesn't understand about not crapping where you live, and didn't get that he's manifestly unfit for any public office, much less deputy PM.

Or the clowns for whom it was inconceivable! that casting Jacinda as Buttercup (from the Princess Bride) in a deepfake video would build rather than erode her popularity.

  2. Andre 2

Cruz is not an imbecile. He appears to have made the considered judgement that by playing one he can emulate the success of the bilious fake-bronze baboon and attract the votes of his supporters. Who actually are imbeciles.

  3. Morrissey 3

The Tangerine Nazi Rapeclown had the perfect soubriquet for this imbecile: Lyin' Ted.

Cruz is not that stupid; just believes his voters are.

    • Morrissey 4.1

In fact, he is that stupid. And so craven to power that he won't even stick up for his own family.

…. Cruz, like Hawley, is prominent among Republicans expected to run for president in 2024, and thus eager to appeal to supporters loyal to Trump. On Saturday, Christine Pelosi, daughter of House speaker Nancy Pelosi and a member of the Democratic National Committee, referred to the bitter 2016 primary when she tweeted: “Ted Cruz is defending Trump’s assaults on democracy with more energy than he defended his own family against Trump’s assaults on his wife and father.”

  5. Ad 5

Ron De Santis is the one best placed to take Trump's mantle into 2024.

It would lock in Florida, which was Trump's surest route as well.

  6. Peter 7

Cruz has shown all the characteristics and qualities needed to be a Republican presidential candidate.

This latest thing is just him being him. There will be enough (millions probably) who will see the bare statement, take it as read, believe it to be profound and will be part of their solid wall of support for him.

  7. Enough is Enough 8

Cruz is not stupid at all.

He knows exactly what the Paris Climate Agreement is. He also knows there are 70 million odd voters in America that will believe him.

    • Morrissey 8.1

Cruz is not stupid at all.

Actually, he is. And he is corrupt, and cowardly. He wouldn't even defend his own wife and father when they were traduced by the Leader of the Pee world.

      • Phil 8.1.1

He wouldn't even defend his own wife and father

Which is evidence that he's not stupid. He's just a craven political actor who would throw his on family under the bus for the chance to hold power.

      • Enough is Enough 8.1.2

        That's not evidence of stupidity.

He may be corrupt and a coward, but he wants to be President and every thing he does, including that tweet is calculated, and intentional with the end cause in mind.

        • Morrissey 8.1.2.1

You may well be right. I concede that Cruz may indeed be a really clever operator, and that his spouting of stupid right wing tropes is an elaborate cover for his agile, ever scheming, first rate mind.

There were similarly compelling claims made that Trump was not really racist.

          • Andre 8.1.2.1.1

Cruz did his education at Princeton and Harvard, and was recognisably among the best students of his years there. That still counts for a lot, those schools still attract a lot of actual talent despite their increasing propensity towards simply being purveyors of unearned prestige for sale.

As Texas Solicitor General, he won five cases of the nine he argued before the Supreme Court.

So yeah, his ignoramus routine is almost certainly an act. Which is why it's nowhere near as compelling as the rotting rage-gargoyle's routine, since that reflected the terracotta turdface's genuine deep imbecility.

            • Morrissey 8.1.2.1.1.1

Interesting. Thanks for that. Let’s hope that one day he will show himself to be as honest as he is smart, and admit to all the damage he and his colleagues have inflicted on his own and other nations.

Maybe after he retires. Jimmy Carter did. No reason the likes of Cruz can’t do the same.

              • Phil

Let’s hope that one day he will show himself to be as honest as he is smart,

Let's be clear on one thing. Ted Cruz is a terrible human being, and his level of intelligence doesn't change that fact.

When we say he's smart, what we mean is that he has astutely identified that his best prospects for gaining political power sit with pandering to the rabid Trumpian base of the Republican party.

              • Enough is Enough

You seem to think we are saying intelligence and integrity are linked. They are not.

                Cruz is extremely intelligent.

                He is also very evil.

  8. tc 9

Playing to his audience of 70mill plus to fuel their new 'social' media presences on platforms they will not be banned from.

    Shit posting/doom scrolling ahoy !

  9. arkie 10

While he certainly isn't stupid, he isn't particularly well-liked either:

"I remember very specifically that he had a book in Spanish and the title was Was Karl Marx a Satanist? And I thought, who is this person?" Mazin says of Ted Cruz. “Even in 1988, he was politically extreme in a way that was surprising to me.”

By Mazin’s account and those of multiple members of Princeton’s class of 1992, the Ted Cruz who arrived as a college freshman in 1988 was nearly identical to the man who arrived in Washington as a freshman Republican senator in 2013: intelligent, confident, fixated on conservative political theory, and deeply polarizing.

“It was my distinct impression that Ted had nothing to learn from anyone else,” said Erik Leitch, who lived in Butler College with Cruz. Leitch said he remembers Cruz as someone who wanted to argue over anything or nothing, just for the exercise of arguing. “The only point of Ted talking to you was to convince you of the rightness of his views."

In addition to Mazin and Leitch, several fellow classmates who asked that their names not be used described the young Cruz with words like “abrasive,” "intense," “strident,” “crank,” and “arrogant." Four independently offered the word “creepy,” with some pointing to Cruz’s habit of donning a paisley bathrobe and walking to the opposite end of their dorm’s hallway where the female students lived.

    https://www.thedailybeast.com/ted-cruz-at-princeton-creepy-sometimes-well-liked-and-exactly-the-same

If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you,

    – Lindsey Graham

    https://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/26/politics/lindsey-graham-ted-cruz-dinner/

When specifically asked his opinions on Ted Cruz, Boehner made a face, drawing laughter from the crowd.

“Lucifer in the flesh,” the former Speaker said. “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.”

    https://www.stanforddaily.com/2016/04/28/john-boehner-talks-election-time-in-office/

    • Andre 10.1

He seems to actually revel in being hated. He probably thinks it proves he's stirring up enthusiasm in his Texas base even more.

      • arkie 10.1.1

I was disappointed that O’Rourke came so close to unseating him and didn’t, but it perhaps bodes well that it was by the smallest margin since 1988?

        • Phil 10.1.1.1

It's almost inevitable that a Democrat will win a major state-wide race in Texas… soon?… but at the moment I would still see Republicans as odds-on favorites.

Demographic trends in the state should lean in favor of Democrats (hispanic population growing faster than whites, inward migration of highly educated workers to the tech sector etc) but even within those demographic groups the swing in favour of Democrats appears to be moving at a slower pace than other states that are more viable targets for a Democrat (Arizona and Georgia are the two obvious ones, and New Mexico has gone from Purple to Blue).

To put it another way, if Democrats win a presidential or senate election in Texas, they've already won control by picking up easier state targets before that, so there's still no real reason to invest in the state. The real advantage they gain from a close Texas race is that it forces republican to invest resources they would rather throw at, say, PA or MI.

  10. Tricledrown 11

Scum floats to the top Republicans law makers are going to try and make voting more difficult for the poor minorities.

Cruz is another very wealthy tea party ultra conservative

  11. Red 12

With degrees from Princeton and Harvard, clerking for the Supreme Court, US senator etc I suggest he is no fool

  12. NZJester 13

Is Ted Cruz the dumbest politician ever?

The answer is no. His former boss was.

    Dumbest current politician, No again!

There is a loopy Q-Anon member, Colorado State Rep. Lauren Boebert I would say might be the current top contender. But she could be on her way out soon as the talk is she is under investigation for live tweeting info during the riot about where Nancy Pelosi was being taken to safety to her Q-Anon followers, and for possibly having given scouting tours to some people a few days before the riots. Some of the rioters seamed to have good knowledge of where a number of their targets (some unmarked) offices where located.

As Teds name was discussed by some of the rioters and with his stance over refusing to confirm the election results while still claiming a rigged vote he might not have to much time left as one also. He might be stupid enough to go over to the Patriot Party.

  13. Cruz is for Texas and bleats for Pittsburgh? With his education and experience? He is playing a very deep game. Maybe hr is just nuts.
