Jami-Lee Ross runs scared

Jami-Lee Ross is running from having any debate with his opponent in the Botany.

Michael Wood was meant to meet face off with him on Triangle TV, but he pulled out at the last minute.  He’s challenged him to any debate in general and has only received silence.

It worked for Bob Parker, this refusing to be on the same platform as his opponents; maybe that’s his inspiration.  Or maybe he’s worried his beliefs and plans won’t stand up to scrutiny.  Maybe he thinks a debate will only give his opponent coverage, and democracy is best served by being the only face in the papers, so people don’t really have a choice.

Whatever his reason, it doesn’t stack up.  The voters of Botany deserve the chance to compare the candidates to be their MP.

Instead of debate, the Nats have just worked on smearing the Labour candidate, saying he’s not serious because he’s told his Puketapapa Local Board constituents that he expects to still be there for them after the election.

Of course he expects to still be there – he has an 11,500 majority to overturn, and he’s not delusional.  He’s working as hard as he possibly can to do exactly that, but he’ll know what odds he has to turn over.  If he wins he’ll be very happy to have earned a proud place in one of the biggest by-election upsets in NZ history.

Now, why Jami-Lee Ross hasn’t resigned as an Auckland Councillor yet given his odds?  Well that’s another question…
