McCully joins Flying Squad

With his RNZAF jaunts to photo-ops, John Key has set an example his ministers seem keen to follow.

Having seen Key use Air Force helicopters to enjoy the V8s and do karaoke at the Parachute festival, Murray McCully has learnt that our Air Force is there to ferry about ministers.

On 13 February our Foreign Minister flew to Vanuatu on a RNZAF Boeing 757 to attend a meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group on Fiji.  The following day he returned from Vanuatu on a P-K3 Orion. The flying times of both of these flights indicate a round trip. In other words, one aircraft took him up and another was dispatched to bring him home.

Total cost: at least $75,000.

An equivalent fare on a commercial flight is a maximum $4,000 and probably much cheaper.

As we live in frugal times, surely the convenience of a personal plane is a “nice-to-have”?
