Of all the dumb insensitive takes on the Christchurch massacre Mike Hosking’s recent effort has to be the worst (clickbait link).
He spends a lot of time saying that Christchurch should not hold itself to blame. He concludes that it was not Christchurch’s fault, the same way it would not have been any city or town’s fault.
He then concludes, wait for this, that the target was a religious target and not a geographical target.
He then mentions the earthquake and concludes that an earthquake and a terrorist assault on a mosque are two different things.
He then talks about how some people may be thinking of moving but they should not because we should never give into fear.
That was it.
What was missing from this most senior of pontificators was any reference to the scene of the tragedy being a mosque, or the victims being Muslims praying at the mosque. Nor was there any reference to the motivation of the shooter being a fascist whose actions had been fuelled by exposure to crazed white supremacist propaganda on the net.
Nor was there any mention about the hate that fuelled his actions or how the dangerous rhetoric about immigrants that Donald Trump has been engaged in for the past few years apparently inspired the terrorist.
I wonder if this was because Hosking has a soft spot for Trump?
Maybe he should try again. Talk about the anguish caused to Aotearoa’s Muslim community rather than the people of Christchurch. And denounce the evil beliefs and motivations of the terrorist.
