Party president Moira Coatsworth has announced that she will be standing down as party president. She did an extraordinarily difficult job very well with class and style. Kia Kaha Moira.
From an email to members:
Today was the first caucus meeting for Andrew and his new leadership team who are hitting the ground running. The Review team also attended to receive feedback and discuss their first report on the campaign which is on track for completion next month. (Submissions on the campaign section close this Sunday 30 November, you can submit here).
With the leadership team in place and the review on track I am writing to inform you of my plans.
Last year I told conference that this would be my last term serving you as president.
My view is that it is in the party’s best interests for the new president to be elected early next year. He or she can then work with the new leadership team and the New Zealand Council developing and then driving the plan to win. There is a very clear three year cycle to this work.
For this reason I informed all the leadership contenders last month that I will leave the role in mid December.
New Zealand Council has now agreed that nominations for the president will open on 16 December and remain open through December and January. Voting will then take place by postal ballot through February using annual conference delegate entitlements in accordance with rule 218.
It has always been a privilege to serve you as Labour president and I thank you for your support and friendship
