More golf with John

John Key is not a good golfer, at least not in my imaginings. Lovely practice swings, but very, very, poor execution. “Just a big showpony” muttered one of the playing party after just a short time on the course.

Bill English, on the other hand is a good golfer, in an agricultural sort of way. Not much class about Bill & he stands with a club as if milking a goat, but he can sure whack a ball. And Bill doesn’t use a trundeler & no, he carries his tatty Dipton bag all the way, while John Key speeds off on the snazzy golf cart.

Things turned a bit sour on the 4th fairway when John ran over Bill’s ball. By that stage in the game, Bill had snuck ahead a couple of shots after he’d snicked a birdie on 3. It almost seemed that the pair might break into a tussle over the score card when Bill wouldn’t let John read it.

“Listen Bill”, ranted John, “the problem with this country is envy. I hate that, so give me the bloody card”.

It’s a curious thing, golf. It brings the best and the worst out of people. And I never thought that I could feel sorry for Bill. The worse John played the more cocky and noisy he became. Were we finally seeing the collision between the traditional-country-conservative National, and the ‘brash’ (no pun intended) new-urban flash-harry National?

Would, could this man be Prime Minister…hmmm?

Next, Williamson’s golf cart.
