I’m going to be overly and unnaturally social over next 5 days. Some of you might be interested in these events around Auckland that I will be heading to. Over this wet and windy period that Wellington has exported to us, I need to get out of the apartment…
For the last seven years my partner Lyn Collie (the other Lyn) has been associate-producing a climate change feature doc called Oceania: Journey to the Center.
If you’re curious to see her labour of love, the NZ premiere is Auckland, 6.15pm, July 2 at Doc Edge, with another Auckland screening July 3 at 4.45pm, and screenings in Wellington, Christchurch and online as well.
Tickets: https://docedge.nz/events/oceania-journey-to-the-center/
Lyn will be doing a Q&A at the premiere and if New Zealand Immigration allows US-based director Natalie Zimmerman and writer/talent Tekinati Ruka will be at the second screening on July 13.
Dokumentale festival in Berlin describes Oceania as: a quiet, haunting observation of everyday life on a Pacific atoll threatened by rising sea levels. Amid the unstoppable rise of the sea, the poignant story of a mother and her son unfolds. Their intimate narrative becomes a powerful reflection on loss, resistance, and the unwavering struggle for cultural identity. What begins as an everyday family portrait grows into a dramatic testament to the fragility of a place and the strength of its people, who, despite the looming destruction, preserve their roots and connection to the land.
Oceania has already won several awards at international festivals and is just getting started on its festival journey so it’s expected to do great things.
Tonight (Friday 27th June) at 7pm, the Mt Albert LEC is doing a fundraiser at Trades Hall on Great North Road.
Phil Goff knows about Foreign Affairs. In his time as Foreign Minister he championed free trade deals, fostered connections with US officials and stood up for New Zealand’s values on the world stage. As you might imagine, he has a lot to say about that world stage and you are invited to come and he him speak about it, ask questions and mix with other forward thinking internationalists over drinks and finger food at the Trades Hall. For me, it is worth giving up a Friday night beer to see what his insights are. He can’t have been back from the UK for too long after he damaged the ego of Orange Chaos.
And finally the Keith Locke Memorial Debate on Wednesday at The Irish Club.
I spent some time with Keith, mostly after he left Parliament in 2011 and before his death last year. Quiet, smart, and almost diametrically opposite to me on many areas. Made for some interesting and productive discussions over the years. He organised to keep discussions going on..
Lyn and I have been doing some work on his website.
I’m quite looking forward to the debate because the moot is China is a threat to regional peace.
Moderator: Simon Wilson
Affirmative team lead: Hon Dr Wayne Mapp joined by Dr Cam Calder and Andrew Dickens
Negative team lead: Trevor Johnston joined by Dr Marco Dr Jong and Arama Rata.
There are limited places for this, so register if you want to come. It will also be live streamed on www.keithlocke.org.nz
