  1. SPC 1

It began with the closure of post offices and banks, then the removal of ATM's because of online banking – then the requirement to have a mobile phone (text) to use a card online (direction to phone apps).

The end of the copper wire landline phone (phased across the country).

Coming is the end of free to air broadcast.

In the rural areas, they receive mail and parcels (and other goods – newspapers and items like fresh food etc) via RD mail service contractors (most vans, a few by boat).

The proposed reduction to 5 day to 3 day delivery means

1.space issues in the van (the room for other goods is more limited).

2.it is no longer a full-time job for contractor, unless they get 2 deliveries – MWF-TTS (which halves the number of jobs).

3.where there is single 3 day delivery contract, the effective capital cost of the vehicle over the 3 day job is higher.

The people thinking they can save money this way should note they will face a higher cost per day of delivery than before (more limited revenue from other goods carriage each day of delivery and less demand for the contract given overheads cost do not fall).

This impacts on the quality of life for those in the rural areas. As does PO closure.

If there is less delivery from the RD and a local PO also closes there will be a loss of custom for associated retail (unless there is a "merger").

Staff should take to TVNZ the concept of a go fund me approach, where staff raising more than their salary, keep their jobs.

More seriously, they should look at benefactors and donations from customers.

If my friends in the TVNZ News Archive are to be believed, the restructure wants to outsource their jobs – harvesting & cataloguing footage, media preservation & retrieval, licensing to third parties, research services etc… – to…

      India!

Because why bother applying institutional, regional and cultural knowledge to our public broadcasting heritage…

Why does the Fairfax photographic archive debacle come to mind?

First wooden satellite into space, allowing components to burn up as they reenter the atmosphere, aiming to minimise metal particles that may harm the atmosphere as satellites fail.

Just watching QT in the House – poor Luxon well out of his depth, having to be rescued by the Speaker!

And, by all people, by Shane Jones (or at least attempting to do so)!
