Anyone who is inclined to hand wave the existence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) and their role in multiple childhood diseases and disorders … including a global increase in the incidence of precocious puberty, should read the following.
The researchers looked at 10,000 chemical compounds in their search for ones that might trigger early production of GnRH. They found a synthetic scent, musk ambrette, used in cheap body products that children are likely to use. (The fact that it's used in cheap products might help explain the socio-economic link found in some studies of PP).
There is a link between PP and excess adipose tissue, in girls especially, but the role of EDCs in the increase in childhood obesity also cannot be ignored, nor their role in the growing epidemic of developmental disorders and childhood cancers.
The problem with living in a soup of tens of thousands of synthetic chemical compounds that we ingest, inhale and absorb though the skin, and sometimes have injected subcutaneously or intravenously – is that tracking causality becomes overwhelmingly complex.
The effects of any given compound on any given organism at any given stage in life are complex enough; the effects of exposure to tens of thousands of potentially interacting chemicals are labyrinthine.
All that can be said with absolute certainty is, harm is being done, and humans in-utero and prior to sexual maturation are especially vulnerable.
As exposure to many of these compounds is now unavoidable, it makes sense to do everything possible to avoid adding more in the form of chemical-laden soaps, body washes, shampoos, moisturisers, foods, and over the counter and prescribed medications … especially powerful endocrine-disrupting drugs.
Whenever we see corporations and corporate-compliant governments promoting social/political movements that are attempting to normalise what medical science mostly still sees as pathological, our inclination should be to want to look behind the ideological veils to see if there are vested interests in play.
You know, the sort of vested interests that might want to hide their role in the creation of disorders by helping spread the idea that the phenomena are not pathological at all.
We now know that plastic particulates are found in human brain tissue as well as gonads; the long term effects of this at individual and population levels are terrifying; and if the presence of microscopic particles is scary, consider what the toxic chemicals they carry with them are doing.
Plastic making up to 1/200th of people's brains and are found in human testes, and forever chemicals in cosmetics are taken up readily through skin.
These are probably more critical than the subset you discuss, which can be easily dodged. The presence of PMAS undisclosed in cosmetics has much greater impact on fertility and health.
