    Very frosty here. Sunny though!

Hello Robert, it is amazing to me to find few comments here on here about the first game of rugby with a crowd of 20 000 and the drop goal. Grant Robertson would be so pleased and Jacinda Ardern as a Chiefs supporter, not so much!! Though both could be pleased to see the game confirming Level 1.

I will be going to a Blues game sometime in July. Great to see Auckland humming again this weekend. Downtown on Saturday night was chaos with long queues for the nightclubs. All the cafe patrons enjoying their overpriced milk froth. I went for dumplings at “Mr Zhou” in Mt Eden with 8 friends today, it was a good time.

Fox News published digitally altered and misleading photos on stories about Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) in what photojournalism experts called a clear violation of ethical standards for news organizations.

As part of a package of stories Friday about the zone, where demonstrators have taken over several city blocks on Capitol Hill after Seattle police abandoned the East Precinct, Fox’s website for much of the day featured a photo of a man standing with a military-style rifle in front of what appeared to be a smashed retail storefront.

The image was actually a mashup of photos from different days, taken by different photographers — it was done by splicing a Getty Images photo of an armed man, who had been at the protest zone June 10, with other images from May 30 of smashed windows in downtown Seattle. Another altered image combined the gunman photo with yet another image, making it appear as though he was standing in front of a sign declaring “You are now entering Free Cap Hill.”

… and we are supposed to be surprised?

The Right is learning from the Left – Reverse Alinsky ….

What happens if we reverse the rules?

      1. Put people to work. It’s even more effective than money.
      2. Challenge your people to explore, to learn and to get comfortable with uncertainty.
      3. Find ways to help others on the path find firm footing.
      4. Help others write rules that allow them to achieve their goals.
      5. Treat the others the way you’d want to be treated.
      6. Don’t criticize for fun. Do it when helps educate, even if it’s not entertaining.
      7. Stick with your tactics long after everyone else is bored with them. Only stop when they stop working.
      8. It’s okay to let the pressure cease now and then. People will pay attention to you and the change you seek when they are unable to consistently ignore it.
      9. Don’t make threats. Do or don’t do.
      10. Build a team with the capacity and the patience to do the work that needs doing.
      11. If you bring your positive ideas to the fore, again and again, you’ll raise the bar for everyone else.
      12. Solve your own problems before you spend a lot of time finding problems for the others.
      13. Celebrate your people, free them to do even more, make it about the cohort and invite everyone along. Disagree with institutions, not with people.

        5. Treat the others the way you’d want to be treated.

But ask first – they may not like it!

Bryan Gould is putting the finger on it, IMO. It is most interesting that Paul Goldsmith made the accidental and silly comment about the PM ‘knitting’ and that he was told off subsequently. In contrast, Penk pens a rant book of 156 pages (30,000 words) and the same teller-off is ‘relaxed’ about it. There is a lot of jostling for media attention and alleged boo-boos are intentional and cynical moves in games of thrones. We are continuously being played. Even National’s ‘policy’ announcements are trivial wafer thin headline grabbers with very little substance; there is no coherent policy platform or campaign theme emerging, which is understandable when the Party is essentially rudderless, trying to stem infighting, and constantly suppressing mutiny.

Mr Gould is ahead of his time as his piece’s date shows 😉

Benny the tankie thinks Churchill's murderous colonialism is reason to tell a revisionist, ahistorical lie.

    • Morrissey 7.1

1.) Could you please explain the (presumably witty) label "Benny the tankie"?

2.) What is revisionist and ahistorical about stating the fact that Russia defeated the Nazis?

      • Andre 7.1.1

Well, a very modest modicum of internet search skills would clarify it for you very quickly. But since it seems you have yet to achieve any search and comprehension skills beyond just going back to the same kooks and cranks that echo your preconceived notions, here's something that popped up from the google autofill to "ben norton tankie" when I had just got as far as "ben norton t "

Funny thing, joe90 was himself commenting on the culture of cancelling journalists and other minor public figures largely via baseless allegations.

          https://thestandard.org.nz/open-mike-13-06-2020/#comment-1719673

          • joe90 7.1.1.1.1

Because a data scientist being given the arse for citing data driven scholarship is somehow just like an ahistorical tankie's revisionism, eh sport.

            /

            • Morrissey 7.1.1.1.1.1

You know, repeating that "tankie" word doesn't make it a whit less unfunny than it originally seemed, and it doesn't make your casual and complacent name-calling seem a whit less desperate.

            • Nic the NZer 7.1.1.1.1.2

No, no, they are obviously quite different. I mean you clearly don't like Ben Norton.

        • Morrissey 7.1.1.2

So, according to this analyst* Mr Collins, Max Blumenthal and Glenn Greenwald and Ben Norton and Jeremy Scahill and the rest of those “hucksters” are Russian supported, democracy-hating, dictator-loving, anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists, professional liars, and old-fashioned fanatics, as well as members of a cult which includes Richard Spencer, a Nazi school-shooter, a Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard, and Alex Jones. Got it. This article you've treated us to is about as convincing as your recent claim (also on this mostly excellent forum) that Noam Chomsky, Norman Finkelstein, and John Pilger, as well as Blumenthal and his "cadre", are "useful idiots." Thanks for that, my well-balanced friend. yescrying

Seriously, though: are you sure you're on the right website, Andre? I suggest you might be more at home at this one, which is full of people who share your views and, more importantly, your penchant for abuse rather than argument….

          https://www.kiwiblog.co.nz

          * I use that word with extreme indulgence in this case. He's an analyst in the sense that Rush Limbaugh or Mike Hosking is an analyst.

          • Andre 7.1.1.2.1

Err, this particular article didn't mention Greenwald or Scahill. Which you might have observed if you had actually read it and comprehended what was in it.

Nor was it alleged they were members of a cult that includes those noisome individuals you've listed. Perhaps you should re-read the article to try to better understand what was actually said about the commonalities between Blumenthal and Norton and those other reprehensible excuses for humans.

            • Morrissey 7.1.1.2.1.1

… if you had actually read it and comprehended what was in it.

I read it and comprehended it, all right. Are you trying to claim that this fellow Collins would exempt Greenwald and Scahill from his free-ranging abuse?

Nor was it alleged they were members of a cult that includes those noisome individuals you've listed.

So were the following two paragraphs not part of that article?

This all-caps charge against responsible journalism is led by son of a wealthy Clinton advisor, Max Blumenthal and his zany “never met a Human Rights violation we didn’t like” cohorts at Grayzone ². They receive helping hands from a number of shady media organizations and fringe voices that include Russian disinformation network RT, TeleSur in South America, reknown racists Richard Spencer, Tucker Carlson, a nazi school shooter and even ex-KKK wizard David Duke.

Though they claim to write from the left, their digital fog-machine defies political boundaries, incorporating anti-semetic smears about Soros that have white-supremacist origins, genocide denial tricks pioneered by European fascist parties and the “always discredit or insult rather than respond to fact” tactics of sociopaths like Alex Jones.

              • Andre

Sadly, you're not demonstrating any reading comprehension ability, but merely your ability to somehow find echoes of your preconceived notions. Those two paragraphs were indeed in the article, but they do not allege a cult, they merely point out commonalities.

As for Collins' opinion of Greenwald and Scahill, I won't know or care until I come across something where he makes an argument one way or the other, with backup evidence. And no, I'm not interested enough to go looking.

                • adam

Still up to your old tricks Andre.

Trying to make yourself the hero of left, whilst in reality your nothing but a centre right hack. One who hates that working people dare raise opposition to your liberal technocrat worldview.

The whole game you play is red baiting, reds under the bed bullshit. Anti working class shitfuckery.

                • Nic the NZer

You recon Mr Collins editor might have titled the article incorrectly?

                  • Andre

I reckon the headline editor is fair enough in broadly suggesting there is a cult of tankies, and that Blumenthal and Norton fit into it.

The mozzie is just failing basic reading comprehension with his claim that the article puts Blumenthal and Norton into a cult that also includes Spencer, Carlson, Duke etc. Those are specimens of different kinds of malignance that that the article points out they happen to share some commonalities.

    • Maurice 7.2

I guess that we can't be relaxed about Chinese implants being included in the National Party. Why would they change from the preference for white people that ruled the minds of NZ pollies since colonial days? There must be money in it for them. Labour voters – better watch out as the upward social mobility achieved by the leading group there, which drove them away from the simple basic concerns of ordinary working people, is fond of money too and places personal materialism over facilitating better conditions for all.

A National-led Government would not increase taxes or cut benefits, its leader Todd Muller has promised.

In fact, the new opposition leader today revealed that if he is Prime Minister, National would spend more money on the "welfare safety net".

He also said the previous National Government did not move fast or boldly enough on issues such as climate change and addressing New Zealand's social deficit.
