    Coalition for Better Broadcasting and Action Station, are holding workshops around the country about public broadcasting and the media.

    The panelists will travel the country holding collaborative workshops with the public and other media experts before compiling a report on the state of public broadcasting and media, with a short list of recommendations for how it can be improved, to present to the Government before Budget Day on May 25th. ​

      Me too. Lots of commentary on twitter, I won’t watch the video myself, so am looking out for some good analysis of what just happened.

      There’s the whole he’s drugged thing. Plus a lot of commentary on his mental state. And the incoherence of his ramble, including him not appearing to realise that he’d been fed lies by his staff.

      Then there appears to be something about him wanting to screen questions before press conferences, is that right?

          He lashed out personally against reporters, he resumed fighting over the outcome of the election and his loss in the popular vote, and continued steadfastly refusing to admit to facts that are beyond dispute. While it is true that many of his supporters still see the person who “tells it like it is” and isn’t afraid to punch back against his critics, this is not a way to conduct the presidency.

          The style that we saw on display at this news conference highlighted many parts of President Trump that are causing deep concern, certainly among Democrats, but also with some Republicans.

    Interesting thoughts on who might be quietly consolidating a power base behind the distracting headless chookery of the rest of Trump’s team. Mad Dog Mattis. On one hand, it would be a huge improvement if the person pulling the strings also had some grasp of reality, on the other hand the idea of a quiet behind the scenes takeover by military people is fukn scary.

    I’ve stopped reading TDB, and you know what – I feel better.

    It’s hard to filter out all that misogyny day in and day out. It’s painful enough when it happens here, and to the blokes who attack the female authors here, I’m over it.

    I’m sick of having to listen to you spew your two year old inner voice, mommy does not love me, hate fest at any female who has an opinion.

    Women are the backbone of the left, the intellectual, spiritual and organisation core. If you don’t like it, what the hell are you doing here? Seriously can’t you see that half the population are working themselves to death to make a better future?

    More importantly, how the hell are we going to get to a world were people matter, when you cut off, or cut down half the people who matter? Apart from being intellectually dishonest, it’s just stupidly counter productive.

        It is wasting comment space carrying on discussions at this level. Perhaps there should be a level where, if satisfaction against the hyperbole is wanted, people delve into Shakespearian vulgarities and quips. Then it would be funny to read, and in humour there would be some point to it.

      Again that paternalistic overlay, which ironically runs contrary to any points about true equality. Everyone should be able to withstand scrutiny, even aggressive scrutiny of their ideas, without playing the identity card.

        Brutus Iscariot you will notice I have no problem with robust debate, my point was not that and I’m sorry you missed it. And why should equality be a male version of it, as you suggest in your response?

        My point is misogyny, and I’ve notice you have put your hand up. That has little to do with identity politics, and more to do with men acting like little princes, smug, self absorbed and women haters – seeing as misogyny provably needs explaining as you went for the identity card rather than enter debate in a robust manner.

        Any more cliches you want to throw out there Brutus Iscariot? Any more tired droning words of unthinking male privileged you want to defend?

          I’ve seen plenty of debate (varying degrees of combativeness and civility) regarding posts from both female and male authors, but i’ve seen no gender slurs on either site. Correct me if i’m wrong. Happy to hear your definition of misogyny too.

            It’s not about gender slurs (TS doesn’t tolerate that generally), although there is one case I can think of that wasn’t great.

            It’s about how women here get treated, and how the culture doesn’t support feminists. There is a reason that there are no feminist authors here writing about feminism. If you want to understand what is going on I suggest you start talking to the feminists here and learn what the issues are. Bringing in your own ideology around identity politics is unlikely to help with that. It’s also way off track to present this as women not being willing to have their ideas scrutinised, and that comment alone suggests you are really pretty ignorant about what is going on.

        Meanwhile, most women were isolated within the home, or marginalised within the work force.

        TDB generally makes a lot of noise about reaching out to the common worker, but somehow women workers and rape victims never count as disaffected non-voters who might have any sway in election results. In the 21st century, how are we to successfully fight fascism when many men who claim to be our comrades are, when it comes to gender, barely distinguishable from Trump? By sidelining women, these men are dividing the Left and setting us up for failure and irrelevance.

        Yep, I know quite a few women who don’t see (mainstream) politics as something they can relate to.

    The words that doomed Trump when he declared war before he had his army assembled:

    “There is nothing the political establishment will not do, and no lie they will not tell, to hold on to their prestige and power at your expense.     From the very beginning I warned that Trump lacked the experience and the knowledge to pick a government that would stand by him and serve his agenda. Trump has now fired the one person on whom he could have counted. The most obvious conclusion is that Trump is dead meat.

    The effort of the American people to bring government back under their control via Trump has been defeated by the deep state.

    When Machines Create Intellectual Property, Who Owns What?

    The concept of machines that can think and create in ways that are indistinguishable from humans has been the stuff of science fiction for decades. Now, following major advances in artificial intelligence (AI), intellectual property created by machines without human input is fast becoming a reality. The development thus begs the question among legal scholars, legislative bodies, and judiciary branches of governments worldwide of who owns the intellectual property that humans did not create.

    An interesting question. Should IP created by machine be patentable by a human?
    I think not. This is another example of ownership causing social problems.

    I actually heard that the gun port opening on the F22 Raptor was designed by a machine many years ago with the patent held by a human. IIRC, The design process used was evolutionary programming which is the same as that used by Theo Jansen to get his walkers to walk.

    The U.S. House of Representatives overturned a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rule that stopped a set of appalling and unsporting predator control methods on national wildlife refuges in Alaska. These egregious practices include shooting or trapping wolves while at their dens with cubs, using airplanes to scout for grizzly bears to shoot, trapping bears with cruel steel-jawed leghold traps and wire snares and luring grizzly bears with food to get a point blank kill. Republicans, with only a few dissents, provided the votes for the measure, which passed by a vote of 225 to 193.

    Gareth Morgan is having a public meeting soon so worth going along to. Let’s have some more ideas coming along hot out of the oven.

    He referred to thinking of having an upper house. Why not something new, a lower house,with interested and informed citizens offering to join with a CV of their views and background, and their vision for the future. If accepted there should be enough with integrity to form a quorum and then a debate over one or two days to bring forward a viewpoint, leading to a policy, and a series of expected outcomes. There could be costings done and achievable targets to show viability, no stupid utopias but improvement of worth, and then similar check every 6 months, and an overall appraisal by a disinterested but knowledgable two individuals.

    A bit like The Standard when it is working effectively.
