Shamubeel Eaqub on why we need to act now to make up for decades of under-investment in public services and infrastructure: https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/117620855/boomers-need-to-accept-we-have-a-problem-and-act-now-to-fix-it

The issues we need to deal with and their solutions will depend on when we act. If we start now for example, we can build lots of infrastructure and houses with debt, which can create the conditions for future economic growth to pay for many of the liabilities of ageing we have not saved for.

Look, I let it be known to a flush chap at the trots that my dentist has an account for the work I've had done. Next year, check my smile at the opening of the new racecourse down his way! Not a cent changed hands between us, your honour.

This is a fascinating analysis of the symiotic relationship between the Russian interference in the last US election and the partisan nature of US politics generally. What is fascinating for all the defenders of Wikileaks here is how it was a key player in this.

Pro Life – anti women, anti child but certainly pro misery, pro forced birth and pro dead women and babies ….cause GOD!

    https://rewire.news/article/2019/03/07/not-dead-enough-public-hospitals-deny-life-saving-abortion-care-to-people-in-need/

When she arrived at the public hospital in Texas, the woman was so sick she couldn’t walk. About four months pregnant, she needed an abortion to save her life. A previous pregnancy had led to heart failure. This time she faced a higher risk of death from cardiac arrest that increased as the pregnancy advanced.

But the hospital’s leadership denied her the abortion she needed.

“It was decided that she was not going to be dying at that moment,” Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi, who cared for the patient, told Rewire.News. “It really was almost a cruel joke: that she wasn’t really dead enough to warrant intervention.”

    https://www.aclu.org/blog/reproductive-freedom/religion-and-reproductive-rights/catholic-hospitals-denied-these-women

she was 18 weeks pregnant, she rushed to the only hospital in her community when she was having a miscarriage. She was bleeding and in excruciating pain. But because of hospital rules called the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care, the hospital turned her away three times over two days when the proper course would have been to end the doomed pregnancy.

Tamesha was developing a life-threatening infection, although the doctors never told her that. The hospital only provided care when she started to deliver while being discharged the third time. The baby died shortly after.

    https://www.newsweek.com/states-women-sue-harm-denied-abortion-1472626

Sawicki said: "There are several reported cases of patients who have sought emergency treatment of miscarriage at Catholic hospitals, and who have been discharged without receiving appropriate information or medical treatment. Patients like these may suffer significant injuries—including hemorrhage, infection, loss of future fertility, or even death—but state conscience laws often prohibit them from recovering for their injuries in court."

    in all the ruckus about the US and stuff, this is what is hardly spoken about, the fact that women and children in the US die because they don't get the health treatment they need cause GOD!. quot;

The support the shitface in the shitty house gets from the God botheres has nothing to do with pulling the troops out of hte rest of the world to bring them home (Germany, South Corea and Japan are sill effectively occupied nations by these useless fucks), but literally to bring a biblical rule of law to the US, biblical being in the eye of the beholder. Besides, what would they do with over a million soldiers (the dumbest and most uneducated they could fin – everyone else has job prospects) and their dependent. They have neither the jobs, nor the housing for the canon fodder.

The shitty one is merely the pen to sign laws, seat the most corrupt, incompetent and biblical judges…….and the Snapper Turtle from Kentucky is creaming his pants doing so.

the shitty one could have had a good presidency had he started his job with Infrastructure week rather then with a Muslim Ban, Family separation, Baby snatching and selling of the highest bidder (i think Besty de Vos calls this profit driven Godly adoptions), forced baby birthing by immigrant children (tracking of their menstruations cause can't have an abortion) and so on.

But nah, the shitty one is shitty, never has been anything else but shitty and it is the most marginalized in the US that will have to pay the price, women, poor women, women of color and their children. Cause the bible says so and the men have no issues taking women and their children back to the dark ages. After all no man will ever be denied health treatment because he is pregnant or pre-pregnant.

    • adam 4.1

Irony can be a sick taskmaster – the loss of future fertility is the all to common outcome of not dealing with complications of pregnancy.

But your right Sabine – a lot of this has nothing to do with babies at all, but the desire of many on the right, and some on the left to control women and push them back into a position of subservience.

On the plus side, Bernie talked broadly about this issue last night in the Dem's debate.

He was quite good in calling out the hypocrisy of the right for screaming blue bloody murder about wanting small government, but then using the full power of the state to control women's bodies.

  4. Macro 5

"That says to me this president thinks he is above the law, beyond accountability. And in my view, there is nothing more dangerous than an unethical president who believes he is above the law… We are better than that. Adjourned." -Adam Schiff

    • gsays 5.1

I am trying to remember which president opined: 'By definition, if The President does it, it can't be illegal'.

I want to say Nixon, could be Reagan or Bush 11.

      • Macro 5.1.2

The current US Justice Department position is that any DOJ investigation into alleged presidential misconduct would need to be reviewed and adjudicated by Congress, which would then choose to impeach a President or leave him in office.

That does not mean that the President is above the law – indeed the Constitution specifically lists actions such as bribery as being impeachable.

I suspect that the articles for impeachment drawn up by the House will not refer to "quid pro quo" but to bribery by Trump. (ie "I will not release the aid already approved by Congress until you commit to caring out an Investigation of the Bidens")

  5. Formerly Ross 6

For those that might be distracted into the 'what single events are caused by CC?'

But that’s the problem when particular events are highlighted by those suggesting the end is nigh. I’ve said it a few times that scaremongering won’t work. Of course it wouldnt go amiss to mention the benefits of climate change. A little balance would go a long way.

Dr Custard aka nick smith is rather worried and upset about the proposed boundary change.

The blue rural township of Brightwater will be joining the WestCoast-Tasman electorate, population around 2,100 should the boundary change go ahead, and it will.

The small rural township is more aligned with West Coast-Tasman than the Nelson electorate, regardless of what Dr Custard says.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/117577517/brightwater-may-move-from-nelson-to-west-coasttasman-electorate

Dr Custard will be at the Nelson A&P Show this weekend should you wish to ask him about boundary changes, being sued or any other questions. wink

    • greywarshark 7.1

Are you going to be at the A & P Show this weekend Cinny? With any special interest? My favourites are llamas and Clydesdale horses. And poultry if some are there.

      • Cinny 7.1.1

Clydesdales are the best 🙂 And the show in Richmond is celebrating their anniversary so it should extra special. Beautiful location, weather forecast looks great too.

I really enjoy checking out the creativity in the competitions, scary rides and having a chat to Dr Custard lmao 🙂 Neither the scary rides or Dr Custard come to the Motueka Show which is on the weekend after next 🙂

Santa Parade is on the Sunday, it will be a mint weekend in Richmond. Could be worth a trip over, with a swim stop at Rabbit Island on the way home. So lucky to live in this region.

Take away the dark cap of N. and the political party Livid or something, and the Israeli people will see light and perhaps feel love of mankind again. They have been bruised regularly in different places and times and deserve better.

Sooner or later the powers that be are going to have to admit that the market reforms that started in the eighties were a huge mistake that can only be fixed by systemic reform, not tinkering around the edges.

    On a completely different matter, but perhaps generally relevant the to last weeks events in relation to temperatures and fire containment. This, from a petition website recently;

    (Edited excerpt);

"…Steve Webster he is a member of the Nelson and Stoke Fire Brigades and has been so for a few years he is a very active member and as can be seen is involved in fighting the current fires and the immigration people want to send him and His family back to England…"

    • greywarshark 10.1

Being a firefighter doesn't necessarily make him a sterling shoe-in for NZ permanent residency. What other aspects to him are there?

      • Karol121 10.1.1

I know, but as a nation, we are do need to seriously reconsider fire fighting capability and resources at this juncture, as well as further funding and resources.

But just the same, I do understand the point that you make with regard to residency criteria, and that being an upstanding firefighter does not in itself, guarantee that one is of satisfactory character.

I just saw it, and considered it to be a little odd or unique, and where he is being utilised (but not necessarily used) in some sort of political football match, and hence the post.

  10. When it all looks like shite, thank Christ justice was done today.

Losing sight of the bleeding bloody obvious seems to be a growing trend, and we don't/SHOULDN'T really need a load of former rock hoppers to remind us of all that.

    R.I.P Grace Millane

    ………. next

    • Karol121 11.1

      Amen to that.

This matter, once again, highlighting that a sensitive sounding, well dressed type guy can be a monster in sheep's clothing.

The un-kempt types often unjustifiably being looked at with suspicion, when these other types are creating more damage than Jesse James.
