Listening to RNZ National yesterday afternoon, I heard a re-run of a few The Detail podcasts about the 1984 general election, the Muldoon hand-over of power controversy and the troika's (Douglas, Prebble and Caygill) transformation of the economy,

Two things caught my attention in particular. One was that Douglas openly based his effectiveness on speed – the faster you do things the less time people have to analyse them and effect opposition.(ACT still relies on this to this day).

The second one was that the podcast was essentially by Toby Manhire and and lot of the information was from Richard Harman. We don't need to wonder about where their sympathies lie do we?

However, the change-over period was very interesting and I learnt a lot.

The Detail is perhaps the best news/current events radio programme you can hear at the moment.

I could say a lot more about all this but this is Christmas Day so perhaps another time.

    Christmas cheers everyone!

One problem after Christmas lunch with my 90+ in-laws is the video choice afterwards, so it's going to be one of:

Poldark, Doc Martin, The Two Ronnies, Vicar of Dibley, Kavanagh qc, Blackadder, or Downton Abbey.

    Very Antipodean English.

Why is that I think of ACC and their BS when I think of Luigi.

Warning Gen Y comic making comments – will in all probability offend boomers

Just got home after Xmas, hot and replete with sunburn. Now hanging out for the promised bad weather that is threatening Auckland but hasn't happened yet.

Big chunk of the SI is under a thunderstorm warning/watch. Raining all day but haven't had any thunder thus far. Forecast is all over the place.

Here in WA, we have had 40 degrees this past week, (apparently a 54 degrees recorded around Geraldton but have no verification of that). Today, Xmas day, a very pleasant 27 and a cooling breeze. Just like home.

First time with the whole family in 14 years.

Kāinga Ora is quietly planning to sell over $1 billion worth of state-owned land under 300 state homes in Auckland’s wealthiest suburbs, including around Bastion Point, to give the Government more fiscal room to pay for tax cuts and reduce borrowing.

Arseholes. All state housing land should be in a trust that prevents it being sold by any government. Can be added to but never removed with a separate trust for land the public can donate for public housing.
