They probably do it at the electorate level - this electorate voted 85% Labour and has an average income of $50,000 (so 85% of people have an income of $50,000), this electorate voted 23% Labour and had an average income of $30,000 (so 23% had an average ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 11:39 am, October 12th, 2024
Luxon better stop being a non-entity or ACT and NZF will suck National's life-blood. (It seems like he wanted the job title and not the job - he is never prepared.) NZF will be looking to screw Seymour while he is deputy PM and if they bring down the govt ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 11:25 am, October 12th, 2024
All well and good, but it's just another thread in a tapestry that includes entries in the Dirty Politics book.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 6:12 pm, October 11th, 2024
Actually, I can across an interesting reference. Basically, it says that a more virulent strain of scarlet fever increased death rates in children to such an extent that the average life expectancy dropped. But also other things mattered "including the ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 4:17 pm, October 11th, 2024
You picked out two particular years with the implication that their were many similar years. Given you mentioned 1851 specifically, the potato famine fits within the timeframe. According to Wikipedia, in 1851, 20% of Liverpool's population was Irish. My ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 3:55 pm, October 11th, 2024
I am pointing out the silliness of trying to get recompence from the Roman Empire, which no longer exists, for a group of people who can't now be distinguished from further waves of colonisation and invasion. And that the "English" were violently colonised ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 4:38 pm, October 10th, 2024
But the English have had wave after wave of colonisation - Celts, Romans, Vikings, Jutes, Angels, Saxons, Normans. Try dis-entangling that. And how long should the last lot of colonizers live there before getting compensation from the next group of ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 3:45 pm, October 10th, 2024
There were huge population influxes to Northern England from the Irish escaping the potato famine. Picking Manchester and Liverpool is purposefully picking the worst cities. (But that sets me up for a recommendation - North and South (2004) - a romance set ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 9:31 am, October 5th, 2024
Where is Winnie? I thought he'd be out front revelling in being deputy PM but he's been awol for ages.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 1:14 am, October 4th, 2024
An interesting thing I saw in one of the census reports was that Wellingtonians has the lowest levels of working from home in the 2013 and 2018 censuses but were fourth in the 2023 census. So, for all Nationals talk, Wellingtonians are really not much ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 11:32 pm, October 3rd, 2024
Predatory publishers are really awful beasts. It costs an incredible amount to publish in top journals ($US12,290 for one open access article in Nature) so there is bit of money to be made by dodgy publishers with the huge pressure on academics to publish.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 11:12 am, October 1st, 2024
Luxon's polling must be really bad if Key is being wheeled out to the media. He only comes out when Luxon needs a distraction.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 10:44 pm, September 30th, 2024
The thing is that noone will buy buildings in the next period if the National bill goes through. Construction will grind to a halt because demand for new builds will plummet. People won't want to risk their money on things that will have no resale value.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 10:23 am, September 30th, 2024

It's "white" laws that make it "lawful" for Māori to have the "right" to live here because it was empty when they arrived here. Do you get the irony? Your ideas (and spelling) seem to come from a very European mindset.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 10:23 pm, September 28th, 2024
There have been many entities controlling the "Holy Lands" from various African groups, various Arab groups, various Jewish groups, various European groups, various Asian groups (depending on where you place the Ottomans). Where in history do you mark the ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 11:45 am, September 27th, 2024
Someone I know had to get cancer treatment at Palmerston North Hospital while living in Napier/Hastings. It's pathetic that this person had to travel so far for treatment and then to add a toll on top is just insulting.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 9:58 pm, September 26th, 2024
The right hated what Labour was making him do. The right actually like him or else he wouldn't have been appointed to the new role.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 9:53 pm, September 26th, 2024
10 years olds can smoke and drink - they just aren't allowed to purchase alcohol or cigarettes.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 9:53 pm, September 26th, 2024
Quite frankly, I agree with you that most16 and 17 year olds won't care. But it's worth that so that people don't have to wait until they are almost 21 to be able to vote. And if 18-30 years old don't bother to vote, that is not a good reason to take away ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 9:13 pm, September 26th, 2024
The teachers have a teachers only day to learn stuff at school - like the new curriculum that National are imposing and also imposed when the lessons should be held. If they are on a Monday or a Friday, it's not for teacher's benefit because they are at ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 10:38 am, September 25th, 2024
The thing is that you are not asking them to wait until 18 to vote, you are asking some of them to wait until they are almost 21 to vote. Noone is saying that 16 and 17 years old must vote - only that 1/3 of them (on average) would get the choice.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 3:18 pm, September 24th, 2024

He going to be the new chief of the Social Investment Agency. Not good for women after coming from such a male dominated area - both the villains and the police.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 1:33 pm, September 24th, 2024
I am actually for 16 and 17 year olds being able to vote because of the three year cycle, even more so if it's a four year cycle. It seem crazy that for some people the first time they get to vote is not until they are almost 21, or almost 22 if it goes to ...Written By: mpledger - Date published: 9:27 am, September 23rd, 2024

After todays attacks it doesn't seem like it's sabotage of equipment. It's just too many different types of devices - it's just seems like too wide-ranging a supply line to infiltrate.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 11:55 am, September 18th, 2024
The problem is that their neighbours (and those that fund them) don't want peace either. And they are just as happy to sacrifice civilians if it furthers their cause.Written By: mpledger - Date published: 10:21 am, September 16th, 2024
It's not just hospitals, it's general practices as well. South of Napier/Hastings and north of Martinborough/Featherston there are only two general practices taking enrolments (at Dannevirke and Pahiatua). The only alternative is Palmerston North. Sandwiches are a good lunch if you are getting two other nutritious meals that day as well i.e. breakfast and dinner. If lunch is going to be the backbone meal than sandwiches aren't enough, especially during winter.
