The Lange govt was doing a lot of obvious harm to our society, particularly to hourly-rate workers (which I was at the time). A lot of us thought like Chloe (don't leave politics to the politicians, mobilise, participate, fight back) to defeat their plans....
As someone who lived through the damage the 4th Labour govt did to our society, I know first-hand that Chloe's approach of "It just needs everyone to care enough to get out there and stand against the govt" is a recipe for complete and dismal failure.
It's a challenge alright. If you make Brooke van Velden look like the person who's talking sense and has everyone's best interests at heart, it's way past time to go back to the drawing board.
I still have my doubts about her ability to go beyond activist rhetoric. She was asked about whether she could live up to Shaw's ability to work with people who fundamentally disagreed with to reach sustainable compromise agreements and in her answer she ...
I don't see how it does the neurodivergent any favours to say neurodiversity makes you more likely to punch people who are weaker than you if you get angry with them.
It's easy to sneer at talk of high-tech weaponry, but keep in mind Ukraine didn't need any high-tech weaponry either - until suddenly it did. We may not have a land border with a large, psychotic neighbour like Ukraine does, but we shouldn't turn our noses...
They're huge protests because Britain now has millions of Muslims in it. The previously existing useful idiots of the antisemitic left wouldn't have made a very big protest at all.
They did seem very even-handed in their murdering.
It depends on the aliens. For example, if it were the aliens in "Mars Attacks!", I'd greatly prefer that they were introduced to Luxon rather than Shaw. But otherwise, yes, I totally get your point.
Thank you! For those wondering what the hell "5.8.2. One person of any gender" means, in plain English it just means "One person of either sex."
My thoughts exactly!
I agree, this is a big loss to the Greens. I was thinking "there's no-one else among the Green MPs with anything like his level of competence," but on reflection it's hard to think of any other party's MPs with his level of competence so the Greens aren't ...
It's true that as long as UNRWA is employing Palestinians in Gaza its schools will teach Islamist terrorism as a noble virtue and many of its staff will be candidates to participate in pogroms. It's just not obvious to me why we or other liberal ...
I think the successes of Israel's espionage capabilities lead people to overestimate them. Spying within Gaza for Israel is incredibly high-risk, it makes spying on the USSR look a doddle. And people who are credible locals are highly unlikely to want to ...
Lol, "neutral observers." Very droll sir, very droll.
"He basically wants to enable a majority to diminish the Treaty partner to assimilated status..." I think this is it in a nutshell. His (my, for that matter) ethnic group is the overwhelming majority. Would he be so keen on a "debate" and a referendum if ...
That was a truly astonishing moment (Hipkins having had no briefing on what to say if asked 'What is a woman?'). Mindblowing alright. The self-confidence that no-one could reasonably disagree with them leaves them completely defenceless if someone does.
Ah yes, how many organisations can honestly say none of their employees have participated in a pogrom? None, surely!
"We have many employees so it's unsurprising some of them participate in pogroms" is likely to be similarly unpersuasive to western donors. The reason there are so many refugees is highly disputable and disputed. Govts that invaded Israel/Palestine in 1948...
For my part, given UNRWA's previous form for supporting antisemitic terrorism, I'm unsurprised many of the countries funding it don't find "Look, only 12 of our employees participated in a pogrom" very persuasive.
It's astonishing, really. Seymour's made no secret that he thinks the law should recognise no obligations of the govt specifically to Māori, he's put forward legislation to effect that via treaty "principles" that make no mention of Māori, he didn't bother...
"Voted for Ardern in 2020" means little. By definition, Labour's percentage of the vote in 2020 meant a lot of people voted for them for the first time in that election and were never likely to again.
I don't buy Infused's claim about co-governance. All the people I've seen ranting about it were never potential left voters in the first place.
Lol yes, not lazy, just rude. Sorry, the reference to GC was to women who won't vote Labour or Green due to those parties actively undermining women's rights. I'm hoping the Greens will do less of this after these personnel changes.
Tax cuts have no inherent moral value in themselves, sure. Particular tax cut proposals very much do, though. It depends on whether you think depriving the poor to provide the already-wealthy with even more than they had previously is a moral negative, I ...
Interesting question! Partnering with NZF only ends up as a circus with way too many clowns, so it could be worse in the long term for Labour to eke out a third term making a fool of itself than to go into Opposition. The 2005-8 Clark govt provides an ...
I follow a lot of GC feminists but was also seeing a strong rejection of Labour due to Covid response issues (which often seem to involve the assumptions that 'status quo' was an available option, or that people have a civil right to refuse vaccination for...
What do you picture them working with National on, exactly? There are no common policies, intentions or interests.
I have as curated a social media feed as anyone else, but mine at least has been full of people wanting a change of personnel to get rid of the people who did things they didn't like over the last three years, seemingly in the expectation that there's not ...
Apparently they smashed the library's windows and shot fireworks inside, but the fire didn't take hold and the library still stands: https://newsinfrance.com/the-alcazar-library-in-marseille-victim-of-an-attempted-fire/. That said, we're talking here about...
When we get to a year's worth of fantasies about Twitter's imminent demise, will people give it a rest, do you think?
