Palin supporters

Sarah Palin supporters, in their own words. Ok, it’s a cheap shot – I’m pretty sure you could eventually compile similar inane footage from the supporters almost any major political figure or party. But hey – never let it be said that I’m above cheap shots when it comes to Sarah Palin. Plus, it’s funny. In a gotta laugh or you’ll cry kinda way…

Oh yeah. Sarah Palin! She sounds great, she sounds like – well John Key actually. Or like he used to. Is that where Crosby Textor are working now?

    Which one is Redbaiter?

    cheers

    • Gosman 1.1

How exactly does Sarah Palin sound like John Key?

That statement looks like it is completely unsubstantiated.

      • felix 1.1.1

The reasons the people in the video give for supporting Palin are the same reasons people here gave for supporting Key.

        Tax cut
        Less spending
        More freedoms
        Real [insert country here]ers
Policy? I don’t know, just better everything I guess

All now shown to be bullshit of course in Key’s case.

        • Gosman 1.1.1.1

According to some in the Blogosphere this Government has been implementing, or is about to implement, some very right wing policies.

The 90 Day trial period for new workers.

          A (modest) Tax cut.

The edict to find savings in core Government spending.

Modification to the ETS set up under the last Government

The plans to introduce national standards in education.

The proposal to open up parts of the conservation estate to mineral exploration.

Now you might disagree with these policies but they are still more substantal than the replies from the Palin supporters in that clip.

          • felix 1.1.1.1.1

Maybe so but that’s got nothing to do with what I wrote – I was referring to the reasons people gave for supporting Key.

e.g. I didn’t see anyone before the election saying “That Key seems alright – it’s about time we had some more mining in the conservation estate”

I wasn’t commenting on the value of the policies, just that they weren’t widely discussed by those who voted Key in. It was all just the same slogans as Palin’s supporters are parroting: tax cuts, less government, stop telling me what to do etc.

      • Lew 1.1.2

I have a different, but related answer to Felix: both are sound-bite machines. People like them because they push the right buttons (regardless of whether they are willing or able to follow through).

That’s not entirely a criticism; it’s an important part of being a politician. Key’s genius is in knowing when not to stand on his executive authority, leaving the actual heavy policy lifting to the … erm … experts in his caucus and setting an overall direction. Palin, I think, would be rather less inclined to be a political manager, and would likely set about governing by decree, to the extent permitted. That’s dangerous.

I seem to recall a documentary after Obama was elected, showing video footage of why people voted Obama taken from soon after the election . Most just said he was all about change, or lines to that effect. When asked for specific policies none could tell any. Yeah, you get the same types of voters in any camp, gotta love democracy.

    • Draco T Bastard 2.1

Oh, you mean the same lines that were used by people who voted for JK?

    • Scribe 2.2

That doco also asked people to answer questions about which policies were being promoted by which politicians. Many people were opposed to the policies Obama held but had no interest in policies. They voted for the wonderful oratory.

  3. Sanctuary 3

Even the lowliest herder out on the Mongolian steppe would show a more thoughtful view of the issues that affect his world; The scariest thing about those people isn’t their vulgar stupidity or crass ignorance (which approaches that of a Mongolian herder, but without any of the excuses a herder might have).

What is scariest is their arrogant, strident, dogmatic lack of empathy to any point of view except their own narrow, parochial, and ill-informed one.

maybe it is Christianity Mid-Western American stye. It seems to have absolved them of the trouble of actually having to think about anything.

  4. Anne 4

@ Alan. “Which one is Redbaiter?”

The really fat guy with a lisp who thinks there is “a kind of” border between Russia and Alaska.

  5. Tammy Gordon 5

my fav ‘We gotta save the polar bear so we can mine there’

  6. The more I see this stuff and it cuts both sides of the political spectrum as sweetd has pointed out, you start to think hell democracy defiantly has its weaknesses.

Shit look at us we end up with Donkey, his years high point was being on the Letterman show, with Letterman taking the Piss out of him, we cant exactly laugh at the USA.

Goodness thats really how bad we are we cant even laugh at the rednecks because we have one as our Prime Minister, hell now I am depressed!

    • Gosman 6.1

I’m curious to know what you mean by this cut’s both ways.

Do you have a N.Z. example from the left of the political spectrum?

  7. Tammy – more alarmingly the woman says something more sinister like ‘ we gotta get the polar bears off the endangered list so we can drill there ‘

  8. Don 8

“Compromise is for people who are wrong”. Incredible.

    >Do you have a N.Z. example from the left of the political spectrum?

Um – how about “We won, you lost, eat that”

    • prism 8.1

Don – Um how about “We won, you lost, eat that’

Why don’t you concentrate on the cricket or some sport. Politics isn’t a sports match where the winners just notch their names on a piece of wood. It is about people, the land, business and how it is run and what rules will shape it for the future. Stick with sport if you want to make childish taunts about winning.

  9. Sanctuary:

    Typical, anti west racist response.

Get the chip off your shoulder about the USA.

  10. The really sad thing is that the debates we are having about what is best for the world and what is needed to ensure the sustainability of the human race is, unfortunately, wasted on a huge number of people. Watching this video reinforces this thought very strongly.

Some people will with conviction advocate a position that the rest of us know is bollocks. I wish I knew how to hold a debate so that the issue could be resolved properly.

I think that I would ban TV. It has caused people to assume extreme positions after the most minimal of exposure to a debate on the issues.

I would also make the internet and blogging compulsory, as far as I could. The debates on the standard and kiwiblog are actually quite good and far better than the debates on TV, talk back radio and in the papers.
